sara_tanaquil, have you moved to YNAB 3? They're trying to sell me on the upgrade, and they're doing a very poor job of it (dudes, tell me why it's better), so I thought I would ask if you had tried it.

Also...you haven't posted since February. And/or you're posting under seekrit lock (HEY!). And/or you've moved to dreamwidth (DOUBLE HEY!).[Insert endless ( Read more... )

I know, I suck! Has it really been since February? I keep thinking about posting, but then I don't get around to it. (Gah, I just got pulled away from finishing this comment by two hours of crises at work. Serves me right for even trying to do anything LJ-related at work.)

I did go ahead and upgrade to YNAB 3 -- I think I was curious and wanted in on the pre-release price break (which wasn't huge, but whatever, I like shiny new things). The new version is very good, but functionally it didn't feel like a huge step up from the previous version. (Though I guess I've already internalized some of its nicer features so thoroughly that I don't remember the irritation of going without them before.) Being able to run it on a Mac would be the most compelling reason to upgrade. (I'm still running YNAB 3 on my PC laptop.)

I will try to do better on posting!

Your review sounds very similar to my initial reaction. I do like the ability to move categories around more easily, and rearrange them in orders other than alphabetical.

Thank you, Captain Obvious. Now tell me if I'm spending more on groceries or my student loan.

That sounds like exactly the reason I never use YNAB to run reports (I don't think I've even tried to run a report under the new version, or if I did, I wasn't impressed with the alleged improvements). If I need historical analysis, I run to Quicken.

I'll be interested to hear about whether you decide to keep it past the trial -- and yes, the trial period was cut back substantially.

There was a time when I desperately wanted this, but now I am looking at my list of master categories in 3, and I am just so used to them being in alphabetical order that I can't move them.

I really miss the tooltips that displayed expenditures in the outflow column. I see how the new click-to-display system offers the ability to jump to a specific transaction in the register; however, since that's a feature I've never really felt the need for, I feel I'm being forced to click twice (once to open, once to close) to see data I used to get with just a mouseover.

I'm not really feeling $40 worth of love for YNAB3, but I'll probably buy it for the change in the way unbudgeted/overbudgeted funds are handled. Currently, the burden is on me to never stray from zero. I'll continue to budget that way, but if I do make a mistake, at least YNAB3 won't hide it from me.
