I pick up the phone this morning to let my boss know I plan to work from home to complete a project. I have no dial tone. I move the phone to a different jack and still have no dial tone. I email my boss, explaining that I've shelved my original plan and now might be late in order to troubleshoot this telecommunications issue, oh, and can he call ( Read more... )

I can only laugh in a commiserating way because I have SO been there. Problems with phone/computer? Why Yes, roadrunner, I only have my home phone and since your digital network isnt working, I cant use it. Oh, and not the computer either. How can you help me? Also, I still have an answering machine. Worse: my old one became a roach breeding zoo, so I had to replace it last year.... with a NEW answering machine. Didn't upgrade to voicemail at the opportunity, nope, I sure didn't. ;)

I understand, say, taking out the garbage, but I dont think you should feel that you would put manga away though; that makes me sad. Are you worried? Ashamed? I think my apartment has actually become kind of legendary among the workmen/contractors that come from my complex. One bugman was a fan and enjoyed coming in. ;)

Exactly! When I called the repair guy from my work phone this afternoon to explain the conundrum to him (I can't be reachable by phone AND at my apartment to let you in AND you can't contact me via the intercom at my apartment if my phone is down), he asked for my cell phone number. DUDE! If I had a cell plan, I would have dropped you guys two hours ago.

Also, the manga on top of the pile on my kitchen table was Shushushu Sakurai's Desert Prince. I'm just sayin'.

Gah, how frustrating. I witnessed a similar issue the other day, when someone who was in the building for a meeting asked to use my phone to call the phone company to report that his phone line wasn't working. (Hilarity as he worked his way through the phone tree, since he couldn't reach the buttons and had to tell me to push them the whole time.) And they wanted a phone number to contact him, but of course he was only going to be near my phone for the next hour or so, so that wouldn't really work. But he gave them my number anyway, and when I got into work the following week, there was a message on my voicemail, asking for a confirmation whether the line was working or not. But I didn't know the guy's name or phone number, so I just deleted it.

And the only way for a service technician to let me know that they're on site and need to be let into the garage would be...anyone? Bueller? That's right, by PHONE.I would think they would try to contact the building manager (or whatever--I assume there's some sort of front office for your ( ... )

There is not. This is my third apartment and I've never lived in a building with on-site management.

The cheap pre-paid phone is an excellent suggestion, thank you. I may drop by the Verizon store on the way home, even though it will have to come out of my manga budget.

Huh! I've never lived in an apartment without it. (Well, unless you count the place in Japan. I don't even know what that had, since I didn't deal with them directly.)

Don't know if you will see this or not (I hope you get your internet back soon!), but a cell phone store is probably not the cheapest place to get a phone--you're better off looking at Target, or Walgreens, or something like that.

I did not know that. Fortunately, there's a Walgreen's on the way home, too. Thank you for being such a helpful friend. (I am SO stressed.)

Ugh, how miserable. And now you won't even see this all weekend. :-(

Good luck finding productivity in your internet-less time! I found I got a lot more sleep when the lights and the internet went out.
