I ordered this anthology of queer performance pieces called O Solo Homo edited by the fabulous Holly Hughes from powells.com and when I get the package in the mail today and open it, I see that someone has written the term "FAGO" across the cover of the book in permanent marker. Umm...what the fuck? I nearly wept.

This weekend I was waiting in line at Walgreens to use the bathroom (really long line after a Christmas parade) and since nearly the entire line was women, we were using the men's room too. And with me, in front of me in line, was my friend Danielle and her two kids from the dance studio. They're black. And it turned out that because the two girls in the men's room were taking so much time, Danielle used the women's and me and my sister used the men's. When I sat down to pee in the men's stall I noticed someone had taken the time to scratch "NIGGERS SUCK WHITE DICK" on the stall door at eye-level, and I was so glad that my little ten-year-old friend didn't have to read that after a CHRISTMAS PARADE.

I have read part of Clit Notes. A friend recommended it to me when I was directing The Vagina Monologues.

I work at the mall and am applying to grad. programs for the fall for literature with a focus in critical theories of gender and sexuality.

That is SO messed up. I don't get it? Was it a used book that somehow made it past the employees? Or did some employee actually take the time to be that hateful? Either way, that's the saddest thing I've heard in weeks. I just don't understand people. I don't think I ever will.

Let me just say that that is absolutely the most appalling and infuriating thing I have heard for a LONG time. It definitely tempts me to lose my faith in human beings altogether. I hope that you are filing a complaint with the company: that is absolutely repulsive and so wrong in every way possible. Keep your head up and know that you are better than the asshole who wrote that. It's not even a fucking word. Send you my love.
