Yeah, I think it's a regional thing. Most of the West Coasters I know call them breakfast burritos, in Texas we call them breakfast tacos. People from the Northeast say "a taco for breakfast?! What are you talking about?"
I prefer the Texan terminology because what I think of as a burrito is usually rolled closed before eating, and generally has a lot more ingredients - including rice - in it. Whereas tacos around here are a tortilla with just a couple of ingredients (sometimes just meat, if it's really good meat) inside and folded over, not closed up.
But, I'm sure if I were from somewhere else, I would come up with a good justification for that terminology too.
I know several people who loooove Taco Deli tacos. Not my thing, either, but some people swear they love them the best. *shrug* They're supposed to have amazing salsas.
Tacodeli has a green kind of creamy salsa that I really really like on regular tacos. Actually, their lunch/dinner tacos are probably some of my favorite in Austin, but for breakfast tacos, they just don't compare.
I've had two tacos there - one that I got at the counter (and it was the worst scrambled eggs I've had, and I wasn't impressed with the tortilla) and another that Valeah brought me (EVER SO KINDLY. OH MAN THAT ONE OF THE SWEETEST BREAKFASTS AT CHEZ LIZZEN 1.0 EVERR, i love valeah) (and it was super greasy). BUT I AM SURE that I just had the wrong thing on the wrong day or something, because EVERYONE LOVES TACO TACO. If the line was shorter, I would have given it more chances!
Taco Port, I think, survives solely on my ex John's business and all of Basestar eating there for breakfast and lunch most of the week.
OM NOM NOM. I've not been to most of the places you've mentioned in thsi post. I SHOULD GET ON THAT.
I love that you feel strongly enough about breakfast tacos to write an entire entry. And now I want that fried avocado taco listed on the Torchy's menu. If I'm ever in Austin, I guess!
I've never had that one, actually. Most of my fried avocado needs are redirected to Trudy's. You should come watch Empires at SXSW! You can hang with me and Valeah and Liz and Candi Land.
If it wasn't such crazy short notice, I totally could. But they need to give me more advance notice on this stuff; don't they know people need to make travel plans?
