Observation: There is a real gap between "that's not supposed to work" and "that won't work".

Accurate gauging of that gap is the secret to a great many successes.
Inaccurate gauging of that gap is the source of no end of mystified failures.

Early in the Soviet space program, they wanted to build hard space suits with rotating joints for the limbs. They went to the expert engineers, and they said it "that won't work". They then asked the junior engineers, and they went and designed a working hard space suit.

I think it was for the manned lunar program, which never got off the ground. (It's been nearly 20 years since I heard the story, so I may not have remembered the details correctly).
