There is a moment in every person's life that defines who they will become. For Harry Osborn it's the moment he rips off Spider-man's mask while gripping an antique dagger so he can finally avenge his father's murder. Brown eyes meet familiar blue eyes, and the dagger falls to the floor as Harry stumbles back. He can barely breathe. No. Not this can't be right. Doctor Octavius tricked him. Spider-man can not be Harry's best friend; his brother. It can't be...
"Peter?"
Peter breaks the chains and proves that this is no joke. No betrayal from Octavius, but the ultimate betrayal from Peter Parker to Harry Osborn. The events that follow pass like a slow motion sequence out of a big budget movie without the music to accompany it. Peter's brushing him off. He's telling Harry there are more important things that matter than the two of them. He's gone, and Harry's alone.
Or so he thinks.
His father is in the mirror and for a moment, Harry is so relieved. He's missed him so much, and he feels so completely alone.
"Avenge me."
He protests. He makes excuses. He screams in frustration and hurls the dagger through the mirror. It shatters and reveals Harry's past, present and future.
The Goblin mask, the glider, the pumpkin bombs, and the vials of neon green liquid performance enhancers. His father's legacy to which Harry Osborn is the heir.
"Avenge me."
"Their are more important things going on here than the two of us, Harry."
"Avenge me."
"Peter?"
"Avenge me."
Revenge. Harry Osborn needs revenge. He'll have his revenge. It takes him a couple of weeks before the perfect solution to his problem is revealed in the headlines of his morning paper. It's just a blurb on one of the middle sections of the paper; after all this is Manhattan, not Gotham, but he sees it. He requests back issues of Gotham's paper and reads it in full detail. An escaped brilliant scientist who specializes in preying on one's fears.
Revenge.
Harry Osborn hires the best private investigators money can buy to find Dr. Jonathan Crane. Once he's found he'll make him an offer he can't refuse. After all, Crane is a scientist, and Harry can offer him sanctuary from the authorities in Gotham and their overgrown Bat superhero, if Crane assists him in destroying Peter Parker before the overgrown spider is squashed like the bug he is.
Revenge.
Yes, that desire is exactly what defines the man that Harry Osborn is to become.
He is his father's son after all.
