...that I think everyone knew was coming sooner or later (particularly Brian, since I told him I'd write this over a week ago).

A note beforehand: I know this is a hot-button issue, but I want to encourage debate without the concern that this will turn into an argument, so...I'm screening comments on this post only. I know; it's quite likely ( Read more... )

I'll just preface this with a reminder that I was asked to pay $1,500 out of pocket up front for my D&C after my miscarriage. A procedure that was necessary to avoid hemorrhaging due to the complications of losing my child. If you remember, they called me HOURS after we found out our son was dead inside my womb to collect. I understand your perspective completely. I would much rather live in the world you describe, where self-government exists in the hearts and minds of every citizen. "It's obvious to me that we both want the same kind of world, but have two very different paths to that place."

THIS! This is why I like you! ;)

I totally agree that big business sucks but you also have to remember that I've only ever worked in the public sector (Three cities and a college, plus Mike's job) and my experience there has also been sucktastic. I think Laura must live in an alternate dimension where workplaces treat their employees like humans.

Yes, I do work in an alternate dimension...I must. My company rocks. Though, yes they DO need to make a profit and will do harsh things like layoffs as any company needing to make financial adjustments. At least they're human about telling you ahead of time about drastic actions, and they are socially responsible in the recycling, being green, helping local community through education and fund-raising programs for charity.

So oddly, there ARE human companies that do make profits. But not everyone can be my company or Google. :-p
