Around 2 years back, a friend had pointed to InvisibleIRC project. Your connection to the IRC server is made via several hops over 'relays' (intermediate nodes), and the messages sent are themselves encrypted. For many people, just the fact that someone is doing something 'behind the scenes' without you knowing doesn't give them a good feeling. It is like being stalked, maybe harmlessly or maybe with an intention to harm.

And oh! Nothing encourages responsible behaviour, not even the PGP web of trust (where the word 'trust' is a misnomer). And to answer your question, I've never felt like using any encryption or anonymization. Too much pain, little gain.
