Recently, I got a mail with news item about Microsoft adding validation for 'Genuine Windows' to Windows Update website. The sender, while sending it to a mailing list (that I'm on) added this line to the end of the news report: "Solution? Go Open!". Solaris and StarOffice were both free of charge long before being open source, and worked just as well as Linux or OpenOffice or any other open (or closed) solution - as long as they can do what the user's trying to do.
i think some people are too quick to start advocating open source at any relevant-looking opportunity, even when it's really not at all related.
