Recently, I got a mail with news item about Microsoft adding validation for 'Genuine Windows' to Windows Update website. The sender, while sending it to a mailing list (that I'm on) added this line to the end of the news report: "Solution? Go Open!". in this case, i don't see how open source is the solution. the problem is cost, not openness (Windows XP and MS Office cost money, Linux and OpenOffice don't).

Solaris and StarOffice were both free of charge long before being open source, and worked just as well as Linux or OpenOffice or any other open (or closed) solution - as long as they can do what the user's trying to do.

i think some people are too quick to start advocating open source at any relevant-looking opportunity, even when it's really not at all related.
