My lack of grace

So, this morning I had to walk to work early so that I could ride with my fellow MIT cohorts back to Harvard for a long vendor presentation. It would be, for me, a weird sense of worlds colliding as I sat with my new co-workers facing some of my old. Since the group I worked for in that building had several 100% overturns in personnel, it didn't surprise me that only two of that group of 7 were left from my time, and the others didn't really look at that happy to be there. But, I digress.

What has made this day rather interesting was the colossal fall that I took this morning while trying to shuffle to work by 8. The shortest path of my sojourn takes me over this huge black-topped parking lot, which this morning could have served as an impromptu ice rink. I made it to the far side of the lot where, for some reason, two Cambridge cops were sitting in a car. As I started to pass them, I hit a particularly slippery chunk of ice. As such, I had a fall worthy of a cartoon. My legs went flying into the air and I came slamming down on my right shoulder, bounced somewhat, then landed square on my stomach. The impact knocked the wind out of me completely and I flailed wheezing on the ice for a minute trying to regain my breath.

The cops saw me take this fall and came darting out of the car to help. Despite my uneasy (and unconvincing) attempts to wheeze out that I was fine, they pulled me to their car and kept insisting that I rest against for it a moment. Anyone passing by that didn't see my performance would have thought that I was getting arrested as they stood behind me with my body flat against their car. In a minute, I was able to slog on with them yelling instructions behind me on the correct way to navigate on ice (shuffle, not step, which I had been doing until I that final patch) as I finished the journey to work. There, I found my co-workers gathered wondering why I was late.

So, that's how my morning started. My arm is still throbbing hours later, but I will live. Sadly, I didn't fall on MIT property so that I could milk it for worker's comp. Darn.

I also managed to crush my iPod ear buds, so I'll have to pump music through my computer speakers for the day. I am still pulling their pieces from my pockets. Luckily, my iPod itself is encased on a magic plastic thing that I bought from Target, proving that Target really does have some kick-ass stuff. It survived my bodyslamming it well.

Anyone else have this much fun with this latest winter storm?
