Baby, I Was Born This Way

I love that the criticism of "Born This Way" (sort of like the criticism of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) matters not at all. The song is a huge hit and for good reason: it's fucking awesome.

I listened to it like ten times on the way home. Just kept hitting replay. It's not something I do often.

I don't understand why people hate on pop music. If ( Read more... )

I feel like my relationship with pop is that if everything is in place, I don't care about anything than the fact that it's fun and makes me happy and want to dance. I can't really tell you what the specifics entail, exactly, just a few things that I tend not like and sometimes, even those get a pass. I really, really like "Born This Way". I think it's catchy and fun and uplifting. I've been entertained by the amount of discussion I've seen going on about it and the people saying it's "not okay" that it sounds like Madonna or the people so sure that it doesn't really sound like Madonna. Who cares, it's catchy as all hell and really fun to listen to. It's a song that I can listen to over and over and not feel like I need to give anything to, which is relieving sometimes but since it's Gaga, I feel like I'm missing something else that I should be doing.

Of course there's more than one way to love a song. I don't think one way is any more or less valid than another ( ... )

I was anti-pop for the loooongest time. Always with a few exceptions, of course, but still. Then Gaga and Adam Lambert came along around the same time (for me, at least) and now, finally, I feel like I get it ( ... )

At least on the internet, a lot of people were talking about how stupid the egg was and how the whole outfit was not shocking enough. I think the backlash is really about Gaga reaching the level of fame at which everyone wants to tear her down and claim that she can't top herself anymore. It's just the cycle of a superstar. I honestly don't think there's any danger of her running out of ideas any time soon. Sonically, I don't think "Born This Way" is as innovative as anything on The Fame Monster, but I still enjoy it. And now that I think about it, I took to it faster than I took to "Bad Romance" and "Dance in the Dark." It's not as strange so it was easier for me to find a way in.

I was surprised to read that you didn't like "Teeth." I think that is musically her most complex and (that word again) original song. But I see hear what you are saying about it being scary. I think that's what I like about it.

Who the hell cares if she can't top herself anymore? (And that's assuming that you can quantify what counts as topping herself, but ANYWAY.) I was actually impressed that she DIDN'T try to out-epic herself with the "Born This Way" performance. Even with the egg thing, the whole performance was streamlined and simple and straightforward, without ever sacrificing the unique look and amazing vocals that makes it A Lady Gaga Performance. In a way, it's the same reaction that I had to the new Decemberists album.

I absolutely agree that "Teeth" is her most original song -- but it's like you said, it's so strange that it's hard to find a way in. I tried, a couple times, but I just kept getting turned off. And that in itself is a compliment to the song; I never, EVER come across songs that actually scare me. That one does.

I haven't gone back and listened to it since the concert. I wonder what I'll think when I do. Hm.
