How to Succeed on Broadway by Really, Really Trying

So You Want to Be A Broadway Star. Step One. Become A Movie Star.

I saw How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying tonight. It was terrific! The production is just spectacular and full of retro charm. I felt transported to another time. Not even the '60s (when the show was written and takes place), but like the '90s when there used to be ( Read more... )

I went on some message boards last night and a lot of people apparently hated that production! All the clips I've seen were great!

Sorry about invading your LJ, but I'd just like to remind you of something. Dan didn't sing well in Euus because he wasn't supposed to. Alan Strang was not trying to sing well, but to be aggressive. Have you heard him singing in the Equus cast Gipsy of the year show? His voice wasn't that good (he was hoarse with a cold), but he definitely sang well.

I knew he wasn't supposed to sing well (or at least that he didn't have to sing well), but I know he took singing lessons just to sing that one part and he STILL sounded like shit. I still wouldn't say he's a great singer, but I was surprised he could carry a tune at all.

Why do you think he took singing lessons to do that part? People that saw the first preview of Equus in the West End and then saw other later performances said that he sang well in the first one, but later definitely changed the way of singing, yelling in an aggressive way. It was part of how they decided Alan Strang would sing.
But he sang well in the Gipsy of the Year Show in 2008. So, it isn't such a miracle.

From Out magazine: "Training for Broadway is an ongoing process. I’ve been doing dance lessons for about a year and a half, at this point, and singing for two and a half years. But the singing lessons actually stemmed from having to sing the Milky Bar [candy ad] theme tune at the very beginning of Equus. For some reason, I kept inventing a new tune every night. So they sent me off to this guy, Mark Meylan, who, among other people, taught Alan Rickman [Harry Potter’s Professor Snape] to sing. To use Alan’s words, 'Mark Meylan teaches through sarcasm.' He sort of just abuses you as you get it right. He’s also just a lovely, kind, and brilliant man."

Thanks. Now all I'm going to be able to think about for the rest of my life is how awesome Bomer would have been as Finch XD

I'm sorry, bb. I'm sad about it too. At least he seems destined to do a big Broadway musical eventually.

P.S. I quite enjoyed last week's episode with Peter and Neal switching places. Didn't you?
