Yes, I should be working on sorting out my moping, miserable, maudlin Hamish (he has Issues in Chapter 21 of Heart and Sole) but, dang it, I got an idea for another AiW story. An angsty one.
Basically, here are the prompts I'm working with:
- All the talking animals in the books and Burton-verse are actually people under an enchantment and they get changed back into humans. (But not Chessur; he stays a cat.) There's pepper mill magic involved (from Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland"). The bandersnatch stays a bandersnatch, too.
- Alice returns to Underland and ends up being crowned (this is from Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" and, actually, just_a_dram wrote an AMAZING story about how Alice becomes a queen of Underland; it's called Queen o' the May).
- Alice and Tarrant cannot be together because she is a queen and he is in the (eternal) service of the White Queen. (This "Queen Alice can't marry a hatter" plot bunny I'm borrowing from a short, angsty, untitled piece by wanderamaranth which she generously shared with me long ago. Also, the line from the movie - "The Hightopps have always been employed at court" - got me thinking that the "always" could be literal and the Hightopp clan had once-upon-a-time promised that at least one of their people would serve the White Queen for all time. As Tarrant is the last, then he has to serve her in some capacity. As habberdashery is his specialty, that's what he does.)
- Mally, Bayard (and his family), and Thackery (who are all human now) end up conspiring to help Alice and Tarrant be together despite the Rules of Underland (and possible social stigmas) which forbid it.
So, yes. It could be quite angsty as Alice and Tarrant can't be "together" publicly. I'm thinking about having lots of love letters exchanged and diary entries written, which are discovered by their children much, much later. (Yup, this means most of the fic will be told as backstory from Mally, Bayard, or Thackery's POV, I think... possibly... And maybe Chessur's because he's AWESOME.)
Not sure if I'll actually write this one. (I have other original fiction I should be working on before I forget all my research data and plot points.) But I just... I dunno. I think I've only come across one or two fics in which Alice and Tarrant don't get their domestically blissful Happily Ever After.
All this was inspired by the song "Just a Dream" by Jump 5 - I heard it in the sporting goods store today that I was wandering aimlessly through and it just BIT me. I don't even usually like songs this... pop-y.

OK, that is all for now. I think.
Comments welcome!
And P.S. I updated Heart and Sole today (Thursday, here in Japan).

Chapter 17 (which has many generous friends and much progress)!! (^__^)
