Mercedes was sitting in her usual place at the small cafe down the street, one of the few where young women of station could go unaccompanied without risking their reputation - due to the diligence of the proprietor's wife and mother who maintained a visible presence there. She was alone as usual, quietly gathering her strength to go about her volunteer work later in the day.

Although she was a woman of means, she had lost her family at a young age and had never found a place where she fit in - a place where she belonged. With all of her heart she dreamed of one day finding a man who would help her to create a place - a home - of her own.

That doesn't stop Hanna from noticing Mercy out of the corner of his eye. She's a friend, of course, so he stops and gives her a smile.]

Hey, Mercy.
