My guess is that this is to demonstrate that Obama really means it when he says he's prepared to reach across the aisle and be *everyone's* president, not just those who voted for him. If he really is aiming to have unity, this would consequently mean that he needs to include people he doesn't agree with. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at this point.

Then why doesn't he have David Duke do something at the inauguration? Or why doesn't he go and buy ice cream for that Adolph Hitler kid whose parents bitched and moaned about not being able to get him a cake? It's one thing to *say* you're going to be an inclusive president, but then go ahead and give a major, high profile Inaugural role to someone whose views are anything but.

Or that he should just say he'll be inclusive, but then not make that effort? Inclusion is *hard* because by its very nature it means trying to get people to work together who don't see eye to eye. I'm hoping like hell Obama is the guy for that job ( ... )

I'm finding it hard to criticize Obama for actually doing what he said he would do regarding reaching across the aisle. I'm *glad* to see evidence that those weren't just empty promises, and that he's willing to take action on what he said.

I'm fundamentally bugged that this issue -- not only gay marriage specifically but LBTG rights at large -- is the issue that he chose to play this symbolic gesture game of "reaching across the aisle" with, in the form of involving a key player in the passing of Prop 8 in the inaguration.

I'm a little bugged that "oh well" is sort of the collective reaction here, as well. Personally, I'm outraged1 but I get that not everyone else has to be, too. But shouldn't more people be at least asking a few legitimate questions about Obama's decision making process here in this case? When it comes to Obama's teflon, "not politics as usual" status, well ... I am beginning to wonder if the Progresives in General aren't playing a role in the 21st C. version of "The Emperor's New Clothes." We'll see how he ( ... )

On this issue, I stand with Princess Sparkle Pony. And if I continue to hear Rick Warren's name every day until January 20, I will surely perform hari kiri.

Ha, that post made me chuckle. But still though -- I hope Obama is not just "politics as usual" but I'm more suspicious now than I was in the days and weeks right after the election.
