CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Date Masamune
✧ SERIES: Sengoku BASARA [Anime!verse]
✧ HISTORY:
[Overview of the anime] ,
[Episode summaries] ✧ TIMELINE: Between season 1 and 2 of the anime
✧ PERSONALITY: At first glance, Date Masamune is a cocky jerk. Well, that's actually kinda true. Masamune is the type of person that plows into a situation without thinking, if only because he's in it for a good fight. He honestly has no evil intentions for participating in the war outside of conquering the land for his clan's name and said good fights. First and foremost, Date is a very ambitious person. He tries to do the best he can with the abilities and weapons he has at his disposal to accomplish his goals. However, he is by no means a cruel man. He cares deeply for the well-being of his subordinates and wants to see them succeed as much as he does. The fact that he was willing to go after Hisahide for kidnapping his troops is supportive of this quality, even though it meant that he would have to give up his swords as bargaining chips in the process. He isn't afraid to use his allies to get what he wants (usually those outside his own personal army), but at the same time, he isn't particularly horrible about it - he seems to know what his allies can do.
Really, Masamune's a cocky little shit, but his power is justified - he's strong in both body and mind. Unlike Yukimura and Keiji, he isn't as naïve about people and their intentions - he knows that there are some people that are just plain horrible (Nobunaga) and that there really is no way to get through to them outside of brute force. Him trying to convince Yukimura about continuing to fight after Shingen was wounded by Mitsuhide was proof of this - he was trying to remind Yukimura that his master would've wanted him to continue fighting despite the situation. Despite this show of intelligence about the world, Masamune has a reckless streak - he tends to dive head-first into situations and leaves the strategizing to Koujuro. He has shown signs of restraint if he knows an opponent is too strong for him, such as the first time he and Yukimura actually laid eyes on Nobunaga in 1.02. He was shaken up, but he also knew that if he fought now, it would've just been a suicide mission, and spent the next episode training and meditating to try and clear his thoughts. Koujuro even remarks that he was acting like “someone who carried the pride, future, and burdens of his people on his shoulders”, realizing that if he died there, everything he had been fighting for would've been in vain.
But if there's one thing that pisses him off on the battlefield, it's when generals use allies as meat shields or other disgraceful tactics of the like. In episode 6 of the anime, he outright gets furious when he finds out Mitsuhide and Nobunaga were just using Nagamasa and Tokugawa as shields, and this is one of the few times you ever really see Masamune truly angry. He also hates having to retreat, despite the fact that he knew it was for the best of both himself and his soldiers. His pride is a big thing for him, and only until Koujuro convinced him that it was a good idea to retreat did he actually do.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Surprisingly, even with all the crazy-ass maneuvers that the main cast of SenBasa pull off? Date's human. Though the fact that he can wield three katana in each hand is a bit insane, plus the fact that in some of his attacks, he launches lightning at his opponents, idek man but he's technically human. Apparently, in the SenBasa universe, well, everyone uses ridiculous weapons or ways to fight with normal weapons. (I think Kojuro's the only one who actually uses conventional weaponry/fighting styles for the time, orz - LILI YOU'D BETTER APP HIM BECAUSE DATE'S GOING TO NEED HIS “RIGHT EYE” TO KEEP CLOSE WATCH ON HIS ANTICS) UH. I have his movelist pulled up on the Wiki if you want it, but really, all you need to know is that he's insanely fast, has the ability to wield three katana in each hand (by putting the handles between his fingers), and can use lightning in tandem with some of his attacks.
Outside of a direct combat situation? Yes, he has a tendency to rush in, but Date's actually a pretty decent leader and someone that his subordinates look up to. He just tends to get overambitious at times.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Dawn
✧ MASK DESIGN:
This mask, but modified slightly - the “horns” are cut off, there's gold highlights to it, and the right eyehole is covered due to Masamune missing his right eye, and therefore not needing it.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: The Date manor back home in Oushuu. [Knowing him he'll move in as soon as he gets a chance. :| Fuck this newfangled technology crap.]
SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON: Haah, gotta say, these bastards sure know how to throw one hell of a party. But as much as I like having fun, I have other things to deal with, more important things. Distractions are great sometimes, but they start to lose their charm after a while.
And I'll warn whoever is in charge of this place right now - you don't want to see me getting irritated. Because then I'll prove to anyone that my title? Isn't just for show.
You see?
✧ THIRD PERSON: This place wasn't any different. Sure, it looked different, but the fact that there was some sort of war going on wasn't that difficult to figure out. Masamune had been through enough conflicts to realize this.
But the way this war was being conducted, through secrecy and subtlety, well, it really wasn't his style. “Going straight,” as he put it once, was his preferred way of dealing with things. No complicated bullshit, just going in there, kicking as much ass as he could, and getting some fun out of it. At this point, he was half-ready to chuck the mask that had been given to him at the nearest guard just to get a good fight, but he could already hear Kojuro yelling at him for being reckless. That and he really wasn't that stupid.
“Tch, what a boring party,” he muttered, tapping one finger against the handle of one of the Dragon's Claws. As much as he didn't want to, he'd have to lay low for the time being, at least until an opportunity presented itself.
Or someone came along that might prove to be a worthy opponent, anyway.
