I'm not sure if I agree. Without hope, would we ever try to accomplish anything? If we had no hope, why would we bother to get up in the mornings, go to work, have friends, etc? It just seems like a terribly pessimistic view on life.

I always tell people "Hope for the best, but expect the worst!" I think it's a great blend of pessimism and optimism.
