How Kuroba Kaito passed when he had that "night job," one could only wonder.
Hakuba Saguru, however, was more than curious about it. Of course, he could give credit where credit was due, but even a genius had to have a method behind his intelligence. A way of studying, a way of analyzing, a way of comprending, a way of getting information when he knew for a fact that he was dead asleep with drool flooding onto his desk while his childhood friend prodded him continuously to try and wake him.
It was suspicious.
An investigation was needed.
He started by subtly asking Nakamori Aoko about borrowing notes. She had told him straight out that she would never give Kuroba any notes unless he wasn't there that day. If the boy wanted to sleep through his education, that was just fine with her. She offered lending Saguru some notes if he ever needed them, which he thanked her for only to hear a scoff followed by a yawn behind him. Whether or not Kuroba had heard the entire conversation, he wouldn't be able to find out because class was over with for the day and they didn't have cleaning duty.
A little while later, the results of a test gave him further suspicion.
So he asked other students. All of them said they wouldn't dare to lend Kuroba any notes for one reason or another. A prank he once played on them. Not wanting to encourage laziness. Too shy to approach him. Missing making notes themselves. On and on, no one who gave any sign as to the secret behind Kuroba's method.
He'd continuously checked for any sign of a recording device or some sort of copy of the teacher's lesson plans--who knew what Kuroba did with those thieving skills of his whenever he wasn't moonlighting as a world-reknowned thief? Nothing. It was as if Kuroba somehow always knew what would be taught the day they went into class...
He'd just about come close to labeling the case as another one of Kuroba's many oddities as another day ended, when he heard the magician approach him. "Na, Hakuba," the boy said conversationally, as the half-British detective packed away his notes, "Don't you think what the teacher was talking about was a bit long-winded when he could have just said it more simply?"
Saguru's brow furrowed with confusion. What was he getting at? "Kuroba, there is no real simple explanation when discussing English literature. And especially anything written by poets such as John Donne. I suggest actually listening to the lecture rather than assuming anything on your own."
"Ho?" Kuroba said dully, arms up and behind his head as he stared back at the larger teen, unimpressed. "What so great about Donne, anyway? He was a poet in the 18th century, right? Who cares about that when we have now to think about?"
A pen clattered onto the desk as Saguru processed what he'd just heard. It was one thing to get the time period of the poet completely wrong, but it was an entirely different matter to say what Kuroba had just thoughtlessly spouted. It was an insult to the poet and an insult to Saguru's own British heritage.
He put his hands onto his desk and stood up, looking the other boy in the eye as he coolly stated, "John Donne was a poet who lived from 1572-1631, who is highly acclaimed even now for his wit and his use of paradoxes, puns, as well as imagery. Most poets these days could only wish they were up to par with him and I suggest, Kuroba, that you actually don't sleep in class when we're discussing this in lesson so that you won't inadvertantly insult another's heritage and culture--"
Even though he had the smaller boy's eyes locked with his own, Saguru knew that he was losing his attention and was ready to fight back for it only to freeze as he realized.
Kuroba blinked at him as he stared in disbelief. "Hakuba? Oi, you don't look so good. Maybe you shouldn't chase after Kaitou Kid all the time. You know, sleeping is a good thing. Which is why I do it during class. But anyway, I'll keep in mind what you said about the whole 'inadvertantly insulting' someone's...something." The Japanese boy looked puzzled for a second before smiling again. "Well! I guess I'll see you tomorrow, Hakuba! Try not to stay up too late!"
And with that, he was gone, walking with Nakamori Aoko back home.
Hakuba Saguru sat heavily back into his seat, putting his head into his hands.
...he was going to have to do something about letting that manipulative bastard use him as a means to keep up with class studies.
