Plopping already formed characters (fanfic) into situations is nice, but what happens when these characters are slowly changing, which is what they are wont to do within stories? I think that's what makes me so impatient with a lot of what I read - rarely will the characters evolve. They come out of whatever they went into exactly the same, and that's just not right. No one does that.
Interesting. I have a similar impatience with reading traditional fiction. I keep looking for everything I was taught about character development and revealing plot and narrative voice, and the artificiality of novels wears on me. And my current perspective (as someone who may have gone through the most traumatic changes in her life in her 20s) is that people don't change that much. Sure, Vegeta turns from a homicidal maniac into a family guy and that requires a novel, but the story I love is in the details--so I've acquired this new taste for vignettes. And for stories in which "nothing happens." Hyper-realism with anime characters, in fact!
