I watched "M" in a film class my freshman year, but I can't recall what I thought of it (I think I liked it?). So maybe it's be a good time to revisit!
It isn't very chatty, since it was just coming out of the sound era, but it's worth it nonetheless.
"The Edge of Heaven" is by a Turkish director, but much of the film was in German. The story isn't perfect, but it has some great performances and really interesting characters.
I'm taking a German class right now so pretty much anything that keeps me listening to the language is all I need. Austria is definitely fair game. I tend to like slow prettily photographed movies, but those aren't very talky. :)
Fritz Lang did some good movies. "M" is of course a must-see. The first "Dr Mabüse" is a mute movie, also kinda long, "The Testament of Dr Mabüse" is pretty good.
I'm told "Goodbye Lenin" is a masterwork, although I haven't seen it myself.
I just saw Goodbye Lenin this weekend, and it was great. Very funny and melancholy and uplifting. I second Mostly Martha. It was really sweet. I also really liked Princess and the Warrior by Tom Twyker. It has such a fairy tale feel to it. Anatomy is a fun horror movie, also with Franka Potente and Benno Furman from PatW.
