For as long as he could remember, Kim Jaejoong’s world had always been soundless. Noiseless.

But after so many years, he was used to it. He was fine with it. What very little sound he could remember, he kept it in his heart. The memory of birds chirping in the morning or the sizzling of the pan at breakfast or his mother’s voice as she sang to him and his sisters before they fell asleep.

With those memories, he had no regrets.

It wasn't until he saw him...the handsome man who sang beautifully in the musky bar every night...that he had cursed the day he lost his hearing. Jaejoong couldn’t hear a word that the man had sung, but he could read the man’s lovely lips just as clearly as he formed the words and could see the flashes of intense emotion on the man’s face. The pained expression when he sang about heartbreak; the gentle smile that formed when he sang about love; the wicked smirk when he sang about sex.

Jaejoong took it all in. And from then on, he had come back to that bar every night. Just to watch the man sing...

It hadn’t been long until the man started to notice him. He would watch as the taller man’s eyes started to search him out in the crowd, and then Jaejoong would blush deeply when the man’s eyes brighten as they would fall upon him. The handsome man would then smile gently, flashing those perfect teeth.

One night the man had approached him after his band’s performance. Despite his confident stage presence, the man was rather shy in person, which Jaejoong couldn’t help but giggle over the man’s obviously flustered appearance. Nevertheless, the taller man had smiled at him, shook his hand, and introduced himself as Shim Changmin. Jaejoong’s smile faded slightly and his rapidly beating heart began to hurt when he reluctantly signed back and mouthed back a greeting.

Needless to say, Changmin had been quite surprised to find that his number one fan, the one who come almost every night to see him and his band, was actually deaf. Jaejoong had hung his head low, afraid of what the man would think of him, knowing that he really couldn’t hear Changmin’s voice at all. It would bring up the question, why would he come every night just to watch him?

Why would come to watch a singer whose songs he could not hear? What kind of fan did that make him?

The taller man, however, only smiled sadly and reached out to raise Jaejoong’s chin with his slender fingers. He then proceeded to ask him one question, slowly moving his lips so Jaejoong could read them clearly, “Why?”

Jaejoong’s gaze never faltered when he answered, his hands moving unconsciously, signing just as quickly as he spoke.

“Because I think you look gorgeous when you sing. It's beautiful...”

In almost an instant, that had been enough to win him the singer’s heart. It wasn’t long before he would wake up every morning cradled in the man’s long arms. It wasn’t long before he would receive the man’s warm stares, soft caresses, and sweet kisses. It wasn't long before they shared the phrase 'I love you' and spend endless nights of passion together.

And it wasn’t long before he would become the man’s muse. The person he wrote hundreds of love songs over; the one he would sing to during performances, until his voice go completely raw, his face twisted with emotion. His eyes lighting up with love and joy every time he saw Jaejoong standing in the crowd.

Soon, the crowds grew bigger and bigger and small bars turned into enormous domes. But as his lover grew more and more popular, Jaejoong was always there. Watching the man from afar, drinking in his beauty, even as his world remained silent. And no matter where he sat, Changmin would always find him. Even before he would step on stage, his brown eyes would search out the beautiful man.

Then, their eyes would meet.

They would share a knowing smile.

And then Changmin would sign the phrase ‘I love you’ with his hands, before marching out into the loud roar of the fans.

But no matter how much Changmin told him he loved him. No matter that he knew that when Changmin sung, he would only sing for him. Jaejoong still felt horribly guilty. He hated that he could not hear Changmin’s voice. A voice which he knew was beautiful and flawless just Changmin himself. He hated that he couldn’t hear the lovely music that Changmin would create as he thumbed the strings of his guitar or as his slender fingers danced across the keyboard.

It hurt that he couldn’t enjoy Changmin’s voice like everyone else did. And it hurt worse to think that he didn’t deserve the singer because of it.

Why would someone who created such beautiful sounds want to be with someone who couldn’t possibly comprehend its beauty?

But each time he would doubt himself, Changmin would roll his eyes and flick his forehead with his finger before leading the beautiful man into their bedroom. His taller lover would then spend hours and hours showing him just how much he loved him. Not through words, but through his body.

And through his body, Changmin would remind him how he beautiful he was. Just how kind and caring of a person he was. And that it didn’t matter that he couldn’t hear because Changmin loved him.

That Changmin loved him because he had been there and supported him when no one else would. Loved him because he was Kim Jaejoong. His number one fan.

And with that, Jaejoong stopped being so hard on himself, and was content with being his lover’s number one supporter.

Things changed rapidly. And suddenly his world had turned hundred times brighter, when he found out that, through extensive surgery, he might be able to hear again…

And his eyes had filled with tears, when his boyfriend had arrived home one day, telling him that he had paid for the expensive surgery. The money that had been from his numerous performances and hard work…

The money he had earned singing for him.

As Changmin pulled him closer and ran his fingers through his hair lovingly, he read the man’s lips: “I want to be the first person you hear when you wake up.”

Jaejoong smiled, tears now falling freely down his cheeks. He placed a gentle kiss on the singer’s cheek, before their lips met in a passionate kiss.

Soon he would be able to hear Changmin’s voice. He would be able to hear those songs he sung just for him.

But that would not be so.

The taller man had been livid when he found out that Jaejoong’s surgery was to occur during Changmin’s series of concerts hundreds of miles away. The singer tried to find ways to get out of it or at least, cancel the last couple of days of the concert so he could come back in time for Jaejoong’s surgery.

But the beautiful man would have nothing of it.

He had signed to his lover, scolding him, ‘Your fans really want to see you. You have to go.’

‘But Jaejoong…’ the man tried to sign back. He had become an expert in sign language. Not only  from Jaejoong himself, but from his own studying as soon they started going out. Another one of the many things, Jaejoong loved about Changmin.

‘It’s okay, Changmin. Don’t worry about me. Please go be with your fans. They love you so much.’

He then gave the man a quick kiss and smiled brightly, ‘Besides, I’ll be able to hear you as much as I want to when you get back. There’s no need to rush…’

Reluctantly, Changmin had agreed to go. But promised he would be back as quickly as he could. Jaejoong chuckled at the man’s disappointed but extremely determined face when he had left him that morning.

The surgery had been quick and rather painless. And when Jaejoong had woken for the first time, he could feel the cloth from bandages pressing against his ears, still preventing him from hearing anything. The next time he had woken up, the bandages were gone…

…and for the first time in many years, Jaejoong had awoken to world full of sound. It was faint and still completely new. His mind was suddenly full from the buzzing of the machines, the wind blowing against the window, the clunk of shoes that walked up and down the hall…

Instantly his eyes filled with tears. He had reached up unconsciously to rub his ears, smiling wide. He couldn’t wait to be with his lover again. He couldn’t wait to see that handsome face once again.

And most importantly, he couldn’t wait to hear his voice for the first time.

BUZZ BUZZ

Jaejoong jerked at the sound. What was that? He turned to the left to find his cellphone resting on the nightstand. The one he used for text messages, since calling anyone was rather useless to him. He had never heard the sound of a vibrating phone before, so he was rather slow in grabbing it.

As he opened the phone and clicked answer, he was surprised to see his lover’s stunning face, staring back at him.

He gasped.

How did he…?

“I told you, I wanted to be the first person you heard when you woke up,” the man’s flawless voice rang out, knowing full well what Jaejoong was thinking before he could even say it.

The smaller man choked a sob as the damn broke as his tears fell from his eyes. That was first time he had ever heard Changmin speak. And god, it was the most beautiful sound he could ever wish to hear. As he slowly took in his lover’s sweaty face, messy hair, and the flashing of lights in the background of the video, he realized where Changmin was calling him from.

He immediately stilled.

“Jaejoong, I think my fans should officially meet the person I’m always singing about.”

Jaejoong blushed as his face was shown to Changmin’s awaiting audience, and he immediately hid it behind his hands, pulling his covers up against his chest.

He could hear Changmin’s laugh, which made his heart beat heavily once again at the lovely sound, “Don’t hide your face. You’re very beautiful, Jaejoong-hyung.”

No, he didn’t. He looked like crap! Still, he had reluctantly removed his hands, his now sensitive ears catching the sounds of the gasps and squeals of the crowd, knowing that his face must be on video for the whole audience to see.

“See? They think you’re beautiful too.”

“But Changmin, why did you…?” the older man asked, his voice sounding extremely foreign to his own ears. He hadn’t heard his own voice since he was child. And now, he suddenly felt embarrassed.

“I wanted to be the first voice that you heard when you woke up,” the man said as he wrapped the guitar strap around his shoulder, while still holding the phone in one hand, “and I wanted to be the first person who sang to you too.”

Jaejoong sniffed, his eyes filling with more tears. He watched happily as his lover handed over his cell phone to one of the band members who held it out, so that Jaejoong could see Changmin’s face clearly. As the taller man motioned for the crowd to quiet down, he turned towards the camera phone, his fingers strumming along the strings of his guitar, and smiled warmly:

“Kim Jaejoong, this song is for you.”

And then, Changmin sang to him. And he could hear him clearly. Truly. For the first time.

And Jaejoong knew then, nothing could ever sound more beautiful than that.

THE END

==

Sorry this ended rather quickly (and I'm sure Jaejoong's ears would've taken longer to heal especially right after surgery ;^^ but oh well). And the video chat on the phone with Changmin and Jaejoong is very similar to the video chats Jaejoong had with Junsu and Yoochun at his concert.

But anyway, Happy Birthday, my lovely beta Anh! *huggles* ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤  Hope your school day goes by fast so you can enjoy your bday to the fullest bb *hugs*
