There's a class I'm taking now that deals a lot with self-image, motivation, and adolescent development. Part of it talks about "coming of age" rituals and different things people do themselves or that are already in place socially that make them feel fulfilled or independent as an adult.

As part of this whole topic, one of the texts talks about suffering. In particular, it talks about the "small victories" that go along with overcoming a difficult situation. According to this text, anyways, it's these victories and what helps us through a difficult situation that contribute to a person's development, much more so than the suffering itself.

I don't know how directly related you find that to your personal situation, but what you are saying here made me think of it.

Yes, I don't believe that suffering alone is what causes growth, but getting through the suffering, and overcoming the situation that makes us stronger.
