“Let me tell you that you’re not going to prom dressed like this, young man! Sungyeol-ah, he’s yours. I don’t know what to do with him anymore.” the lady sighed before leaving her son and his friend.

“Your mother’s right, Myungsoo.” Sungyeol rolled his eyes as he made his way to sit on the bed.

Looking at his best friend’s clothes, he let out a sigh. Black. The suit, shirt, pants and tie were all black. Myungsoo was predictable; he either wore plaid shirts or black clothes, which was why Sungyeol wasn’t even surprised. Though tonight was definitely a big night and they had to pay extra attention to their looks. In other words, less black. Sungyeol knew he would have a hard time convincing his stubborn friend to change his wardrobe habit.

“Black is classy, okay!” Myungsoo tried to defend himself, crossing his arms on his chest.

“Are you going to a funeral? No, we’re going to prom. Ugh, let me look for something else.”

Myungsoo stepped away to sit on the bed. Fortunately for him, Sungyeol came early. Maybe the latter already knew he had to pick Myungsoo’s clothes for him.

“Crap, I forgot you didn’t have any white shirts,” Sungyeol suddenly whistled, taking out an outfit from the closet. “I don’t know how did this thing even get in your closet, but I guess you’ll have to wear it.” Sungyeol showed his friend a silver suit with a dark-grey shirt and a black tie.

“Must be my mom,” Myungsoo sighed. “I wonder when you’d stop dressing me.”

“Do you want me to dress you?” His friend asked with a sly smile.

Myungsoo rolled his eyes, took his clothes and went to the bathroom. About ten minutes later, he went downstairs all dressed and ready. To his surprise, the other teenager and his mother clapped their hands, nodding in approval.

“I’m sorry Mrs Kim, I couldn’t find better clothes.”

“It’s alright, Sungyeol-ah,” Myungsoo’s mom assured. “I thought he would never wear it. Thank you Sungyeol-ah.” She covered her mouth with her hand and sniffed. “Oh my, you two look stunning! The other boys should definitely watch their backs. All those ladies won’t be able to take their eyes off of you.”

“Mom!” Myungsoo blushed, his mom never failed to embarrass him.

“Sungyeol-ah, do you want to stay over tonight? I’ll call your mother. But don’t come home too late, boys. Alright?”

“We won’t. Thank you Mrs Kim!” Sungyeol bowed and dragged his friend outside. “Woho! I’m really excited, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, but kind of anxious too. Somehow.” Myungsoo made a face with a sigh.

“Oh come on, girls already fall for you,” the other boy nudged him, laughing. “You have nothing to be anxious about.”

Sungyeol wrapped an arm around his friend’s neck and kept on repeating how eager he was. They finally reached their high school about fifteen minutes later. Their classmates were all dressed so formally. It was quite unexpected for some of them to follow the prom’s rules. Ignoring his best friend commenting about the girls’ looks, Myungsoo walked to their friends who were gathering outside the gymnasium, where the party was held.

“What’s going on with Woohyun hyung?” he asked as he noticed that his friend wasn’t even trying to hide his wide smile.

“He finally asked Seungyeon noona out. Lucky him to have a partner for tonight.” Sungjong told him when Dongwoo joined them.

“Hey Myungsoo. So, who’s the lucky girl you’ll dance with?"

“That coward didn’t ask Soojung yet.”

“You shut up!” Myungsoo gritted his teeth as he turned to Sungyeol and covered the latter’s mouth with his hands.

“Still? When are you going to? I heard that that Joon guy wanted to ask her.” Dongwoo said in a low voice even though everyone was already aware of it.

“I’m just… waiting for the right time, okay?” Myungsoo managed to say, feeling his ears going on fire.

“If you keep on waiting like this, I won’t be surprised if he kisses her before you. Just saying.” Hoya shrugged as they walked inside the gymnasium and left him outside, speechless.

Myungsoo entered the gymnasium after, still replaying Hoya’s words in his head. Trying to shake those thoughts away, he admired the way the place was decorated. Near the main entrance, there was a huge buffet against the wall with all kind of food, and no alcohol to his friend’s disappointment. A dozen of tables were placed close to the buffet so that there would be a large dancing area. Finding an empty seat, he stared at the dancing students until someone sat beside him.

“Hey Myung,” Sungyeol put his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I hope you’re not mad when I called you a ‘coward’ earlier. I just don’t understand why you still haven’t made a move.”

“No, you guys are right,” Myungsoo smiled before looking away. “I’m just… shy, I guess.”

“You’ve never been shy! Oh my God, what did she do to you?”

Sungyeol was about to shake him when the other stopped him in time. The latter rolled his eyes, thank God there was some music playing already or he would be once again humiliated by his friend.

“Haven’t seen her yet, she most likely won’t come.”

“But what if she does? Does this mean someone asked her out?” Myungsoo panicked as he realized he shouldn’t have waited too long.

“Whoa, first, calm down. Maybe her friends invited her, don’t start to freak out.” his best friend tried his best to cheer him up and urge him to think positively.

“Who would even invite their friends to prom?”

“Us, duh! Our friends are all hyungs and-,” Sungyeol suddenly stopped talking. “Okay, don’t move. Stay still.”

“Myungsoo-yah, look who’s there!” Dongwoo said slowly.

Instinctively, Myungsoo turned his head to Dongwoo’s voice but at the same time, his eyes stayed glued to the main entrance. It would be exaggerating to say that he wasn’t aware of what was happening around him, but he was pretty much captivated by Soojung’s presence. She was wearing a short pink dress with beige heels and the way she smiled made him instantly melt.

“Told you, she’s with her friends. Wow, Victoria noona looks stunning.”

“Psh, she’s way out of your league, Sungyeol-ah.”

“She’s out of yours too. Not all girls like delinquents.”

“Want to bet? I’m a bad boy and girls love it. We’ll talk about it when you’ll get your first girl, huh.”

Myungsoo preferred to ignore their quarrel and walked to the buffet. The moment he reached it, two girls approached him.

“Myungsoo, why haven’t you asked me out yet? I’m waiting!” One of the girls said with a pout, arms crossed over her chest, way too confident for her own good.

“You can still wait.” he replied, not bothering to look at her.

He almost got a headache from all those girls asking him. Yet somehow, he was hoping Soojung would ask him before he would. ‘I’m such a coward. I should be the one asking her.’ When Myungsoo joined his friends in their table, his eyes couldn’t help but look for Soojung in the place. Unfortunately for him, she was far away from them he could barely see her.

“You should go to her now, Myungsoo. Seriously,” his best friend nudged him after an hour. “If you don’t, you’ll regret it. So go, come on.”

Taking a deep breath, Myungsoo nodded and stood up. He couldn’t even hear his friends encouraging him as he made his way through the tables. Moving towards Soojung and her friend, he froze when the other girl made Soojung turn to him.

“Hi. Erm, hi. Excuse me, I. Erm. Can I... Can I talk to your friend?”

“What for?” the girl grinned, amused at his struggle.

“Can I just… talk to her, please?”

Myungsoo was slowly dying on the spot, the more he waited, the more he got nervous. Even for an exam, he never was that anxious. Soojung’s friend left them and he sat beside her without uttering a single word. Pondering whether looking at her or not, he finally gave in when she stared at him with a shy smile.

How beautiful she was.

“Hi, my name is Myungsoo. Nice to meet you.”

“I’m Soojung, nice to meet you,” she timidly smiled at him. “What did you want to talk about?”

“I… I was wondering if,” he coughed. “You’d like to be my partner. To dance. With me.”

She lowered her head down as a faint blush covered her cheeks. “Sure.”

The moment he stood up holding his hand to her, it was the time for slow dances. Perfect timing. Leading his partner to the dancing area, he didn’t dare to touch her even though the dance obliged him to. He was supposed to put his hands on her hips or around her waist but he couldn’t. Suddenly, she linked her arms around his neck, bringing them closer and he pushed his thoughts away, trying his best not to embrace her but still keeping her in his arms.

He felt like his heart was about to pop out of his chest by the excitement of having her in his embrace. Even if they didn’t talk throughout the whole dance, he didn’t feel scared anymore. After two dances, Myungsoo asked her if it was okay for them to go away, she nodded and he held her hand. When they went outside, he took off his jacket and put it on her shoulders. ‘Thank you,’ she whispered and he melted.

“So I… I wanted to thank you for accepting to be my partner,” Myungsoo told her with a shy smile, feeling his ears go on fire.

“I never thought you would ask me even if I was secretly expecting you to.” Soojung confessed in a soft voice, hoping he wouldn’t be able to catch her words.

“You… What? You were… waiting for me?”

“Yeah, kind of.”

How could she be honest with him so easily? He had been scared shitless, yet she was assuring him she had been waiting for him. At that moment, Myungsoo gained the courage and took her hand, looking at her with love.

“Am I too late to ask you out?” he asked her almost in a whisper.

Soojung smiled at him and leaned forward, allowing him to hug her. No matter how cold it was, both didn’t pay attention as they were stuck in their cocoon. She linked her arms around his neck, bringing their faces closer until Myungsoo pressed his lips against hers. Lost in their moment, she tiptoed, feeling the urge to deepen their kiss. He unconsciously pushed her against the wall without knowing that one of her friends was looking for her.

Myungsoo wrapped his arms around her while she was hiding herself against his chest, desperately trying to avoid an awkward situation.

“Soojung-ah, I… Oh hi there,” her friend smirked, approaching them. “Did you see our Soojungie? She left her scarf with me-”

“Go away unnie!” Soojung groaned, grabbing the scarf before getting back to her position.

When the girl left them, he chuckled and took the scarf, slowly wrapping it around her neck. ‘You’re cute,’ he whispered and kissed her forehead. After a few minutes, they went inside, splitting to join their friends.

“So, how did it go?”

“Stupid question, hyung,” Sungjong rolled his eyes at Hoya before speaking again. “Seems like Myungsoo hyung’s jacket found its way to Soojung’s shoulders.”

“Aww, I’m so proud of you!” Sungyeol squealed, hugging his best friend tightly. “So, what did you say?”

“Wait, what about your bet with Dongwoo hyung?”

“Oh that? Well, neither of us could ask Victoria noona out. Besides, he scored with Hyosung noona,” Sungyeol shrugged. “Now come on, tell me. What happened?”

For about fifteen minutes, Myungsoo tried to tell his friends about his confession to Soojung, but they were all either squealing like girls, or teasing him. He finally gave up and went to find her again. About an hour later, he offered to take her home, ignoring their friends’ cheers. Fortunately for him, she lived a few blocks away from the school. Truthfully, although he was pretty attached to her already, he didn’t know if he could accompany her if she was living at the other side of the town.

“So… this is where I live.” she whispered, still not letting go of his hand.

Myungsoo pulled her close into a passionate kiss, her fists instantly clutching his shirt. The moment they parted, their lips curved in innocent happy smiles. They pressed their together for a few seconds until he leaned again to peck her lips. When Soojung opened the door, she invited him inside and gave him his jacket back.

“Bring it to me tomorrow?” she asked, wrapping her scarf around his neck.

Without a word, Myungsoo kissed her as a reply and forced himself to leave. The second he was outside, he felt his phone vibrating.
