Book vendors are among the least appreciated people in the modern marketplace. Since you sell the written word, the consumers expect instant gratification like they get from other written-word media outlets. When even out-of-print and obscure titles are just a mouse-click away and we have an information glut all over the web, people somehow expect every bookstore to be infinitely well-stocked. We don't demand this of clothing stores or appliance shops, though. I think this is because you're seen mainly as vendors of "information" rather than concrete goods. The fact that your info IS concretized in bound, shiny editions doesn't matter much to these people because combined with their insatiable thirst for instant media is the unmistakable fact that they're also probably idiots.
