All the Citizens' Men

Dec 07, 2010 18:02

I'm editing an anthology of critical responses -- both written and artistic -- to the United States diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks in November and December of this year.

Details at the link above, and under the cut. Please feel free to spread this far and wide! I'm happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Thank you for doing this. I'm afraid I would not have the political knowledge to contribute but I fully support your effort.

Thank you. Would you mind passing the link around? You know a lot of really brilliant people and I would love to get responses from all over the world.

Fair use is interesting and all - but do you think copyright is the basis Amazon is standing on with the "own or otherwise control all of the rights" issue? I wonder if there's some nebulous "classified material has it's own rights" mumbo jumbo they're driving at here.

Also, I'm not sure that listing a book with Amazon is the same as using their web hosting service.

They may very well be driving at something else, but if so, they haven't been any clearer than they have to be about it. And they don't have to be all that clear, since no one can really take them to account for anything -- yet.

It's not the same as using their web service, but they've already behaved in rather dodgy ways, so I intend to put them under the microscope. I find that sort of thing entertaining.

Following the SCO v IBM and related sagas via Groklaw all these years has given me a reasonable layman's education on copyright and so forth, so I find the topic interesting.

Overall the project sounds like a really cool idea, can't wait to see what you make of it.

It seems clear that the cables are statutorily not subject to copyright. They're entirely written by USG employees, aren't they?

I really hope that I have the time to put together an entry for this project. The majority of my waking hours are now being spent reading the cables, reading news about Wikileaks, discussing Wikileaks at the Mysterious Workplace, and writing blog posts Wikileaks.

That would be really great, particularly given your foreign policy expertise. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

And if you can pass the link around at the Mysterious Workplace, that would be awesome as well. (Any chance they might be able to pimp it, actually?)

I can pimp it myself, but the Mysterious Workplace has to be very careful about putting out anything which encourages people to read the cables.

That is a really sad commentary on the state of our nation. I'm so sorry. And thank you.

Oh, goodness, hooray!

Yes, black and white -- I should probably mention that explicitly, actually. It'll be trade paperback, so roughly 5"x8" pages.
