That Girl Genius is to me what My Little Pony is to you.
I read the first issue back when it came out as a paper comic, and it just didn't grab me. Then when it went to the web, I spent a couple days clicking through the archive from the beginning, and just when I was starting to get a handle on the characters and the setting, Agatha gets kidnapped--or something; it's been a couple years now since I read any of it--and wakes up in an entirely different setting with an entirely different cast of characters. And I didn't want to slog through the whole process of trying to figure out who and where all over again, so I just stopped.
It's like when I sold or gave away all my Legos before moving to Massachusetts. I wiped off my hands, thought, "And so I have put away my childish things!" and then Lego came out with the Indiana Jones sets. Now my collection is bigger than before. {{sigh}}
Same with That Foglio Guy. I had some of his What's New? comics in my "Sell on Ebay/Craigslist" boxes,then took another look and found that he had signed them all, which I had completely forgotten about. Later on I flipped through, then set down and walked away from, GG Volume 10 in that Tustin store. For some reason I ended up buying a collected Vol 1-3 (just in case), read it, then got the rest the next week. So, I still hate his women's beachball-sized boobs, but I do like the rest of the art and writing.
But your analogy is not quite correct. You forget that I'm my own biggest fan. All of my stories are "Starring Mara," and "Featuring..." someone else. I keep trying to break out of that fanfic mold, but can't. The GG gang just happen to be her current co-stars. Others will
( ... )
Now I'm picturing Mara somehow getting zapped by some fiendish machine and vanishing before her friends' startled eyes. They expend great efforts to duplicate the experiment in order to get her back only to discover that she's ended up in Ponyville and doesn't want to leave...
The "Once Upon a Time" world, more likely. The last time I went directly from one crossover to another was in that Quantum Leap fic I wrote. Sam hopped from a Mara story right into the first Frankenstein movie ("Oh, boy.")
I have to actually see an ep or two of MLP to get the gist of it. Then we'll talk.
How do they behave around bipeds? Or is the expectation that she'd become a pony AHHHHHHHHHH I DON'T NEED THAT IMAGE
{{sigh}} Who am I kidding? She'd fit right into Ponyville.

My loss, as they say.
