James opened his eyes as he felt a slight breeze blow across his forehead. Turning, he lay in bed and tried to remember the dream that was quickly escaping him-- he could faintly remember the smell of motorbike oil and flashes of bright red hair. Rubbing his eyes, he turned over to go back to sleep. As he closed his eyes, he stopped-- was that the faint sound of voices he heard? Shrugging it off as tricks of the wind, he willed himself to go back to sleep. As he did, it caught his ear: the unmistakable sound of Sirius laughing. James shot up in bed. What was Sirius doing up in the middle of the night? Was he sleepwalking? Possibly catching his father (or worse, his mother) in the hallway during two awkward and unfortunately timed trips to the loo ( ... )

Barty jerked backwards as James' shouting echoed down the lawn towards them. He very nearly dropped the cigarette clamped between his lips in vague, opium-addled surprise.

It took him a moment to recognize the yelling figure, and another moment to mutter, "Shit. Isn't that...?"

Thinking quickly, Barty groped about for his wand and tapped the little velvet bag in which his leisure-related paraphanelia was kept. The bag's mouth immediately widened, and the various instruments and attachments--the little vial, the needle, the belt--were drawn in. The bag sinched shut and Barty pocketed it--he was sure James had seen the contents, but he wouldn't have any of his posessions damaged if a fight were about to break loose. Of course, his cigarette case was still laying open on the sidewalk, and the variety of interesting-looking Muggle alcohols were still collected at Sirius' feet--but surely James wouldn't care about thatJames drew closer, clearly furious, and Barty winced. Maybe he would ( ... )

When Barty jerked backwards, Sirius very nearly fell forward, had he not slammed his palm into the sidewalk to prop himself up - it would sting terribly for a couple days, but he could barely feel it at the time. Truth be told, he barely felt much of anything until he turned and saw James running his way, which almost shocked him into sobriety.

Almost. He inhaled sharply, taking with his breath a hit of whatever Barty's cigarettes were laced with, and swore with the smoke he breathed out. "Fuck."

He briskly took the cigarette out of his mouth and let it dangle in his hand - he was above hiding it behind his back, especially since it was much too late now to try and backpedal his way out of everything, but it wouldn't do to wave it in front of James's face. "I, uh..." Sirius stumbled over his words as he finally faced an irate James. "...Hey?"

James laughed dispite himself: an angry, harsh, chuckle. "Hey? Hey?" James stood there, millions of words racing through his mind, but none of them making any coherent sense. Searching for some sort of appropriate sentence, he crossed his arms and stared at the two of them, sitting there with blind, dumb expressions on their faces. Unfortunately, James didn't even really know what he wanted to say. He was angry-- he knew that much-- but why? Angry for finding his best friend sneaking out in the middle of the night? Angry for the fact that he was sneaking out with Barty Crouch, of all people? Or was he angry that they were out putting stupid Muggle substances into their body? Unable to determine the source of his frustration, he avoided the gaze of his best friend and turned his anger onto the Slytherin boy. "What are you doing here?" James turned on Barty, anger flashing in his eyes.

"Always," Barty said, offering Sirius another cigarette. His wand hand had been outstretched, calling the Knight Bus, but he dropped it as the dark-haired young man rejoined him.

He was running low on his special brand, but the gesture seemed appropriate. After all, Sirius had damaged his relationship with James by spending time with Barty... not to spend time with Barty, naturally, as if Sirius were made to choose between the two the choice was obvious (as it should be), but by spending time with him, made Barty feel a bit charitable. The least he could do was help him forget his worries, if even for a moment ( ... )

"Do we have any drink left?" Sirius muttered - he had picked up the leftover bottles as he made his way to Barty, sloshing them around to see if he still heard liquid inside. "Yep, still good ( ... )
