She isn't used to sitting in hospital rooms, isn't used to doctors fussing. She'd been adamant when she came in, everyone had to use gloves when tending her. The fact that the metal bar was strong enough to fracture her ulna, the bone had cracked in half, piercing through her skin. The entire day had gone to hell and back without much more than a nudge.
Rogue was starting to hate the New Warriors. They might've been fresh off the bus, as Mystique liked to say, but they were proving to have far too good a grasp on their own abilities and how to foil plans. As it happened, Rogue and Nova went head to head with their powers and Carol Danvers' abilities didn't seem to measure up against Nova's. Rogue ended up having to bow out when the bone tore through skin following the bar colliding with her arms.
She'd stumbled into the nearest hospital, Bellevue, and waited to be seen. With a towel around her arm to catch the blood, Rogue had shoved the bone back into her arm as well as possible, but still needed the treatment to heal. They told her she'd need pins, which required surgery. Five hours later, she was groggy, with her arm in a cast but mostly back together.
The only issue now was her discharge. "Miss Richter, without a family member or friend-"
"Ruby! Ruby!" Rogue just smiled past the doctor, glad that she'd used the fake insurance that she had.
"Sounds like mah brother's here for me." Sure enough, with a nurse trailing behind, looking at the doctor apologetically, Ric leaned on the doorway.
"Dios Ruby," Ric didn't bother with the doctor standing right there, pushing into the room and sitting on the bed next to Rogue, "what've I told you about those boys. You gotta stop the rough housing."
"Um, Mister Richter? Yes, your sister has suffered a clean break in the ulna, we've pinned the bone in place, and cast the arm, however she will need supervision for a few weeks. If there is any distress or discomfort from the arm, you have to come and see us. We'll expect you in a month for further X-rays to make sure the pin is in place and helping the healing."
"But she can come home, right? I can take her home?" Rogue just leaned against Ric, sighing softly.
"Yes, I'll have the release papers ready for you to sign, along with a prescription for some pain medication." With the doctor leaving, Ric wrapped his arms carefully around Rogue, keeping her cast arm around his back as she leaned against him.
"You're taking a break, okay? Mystique can deal with it, you're coming to Mexico for a while."
"Okay, Ah could use a break." And really, a few weeks in Mexico with Julio and Mark seemed like the best idea in the world. "Mama probably knows already, so we can just go."
Ric in protective mode was always laughable, adorable and sometimes downright annoying. But with one of Rogue's arms out of commission, she didn't argue that he drove her to her apartment, that he called her mother and left a message with Irene for Raven to know where to reach Rogue, but only if she really needed to. He packed her bag, with Rogue watching and correcting him each step of the way, booked their flight and then, well, then Ric fussed the entire flight to Mexico while Rogue wished he'd just let her fly.
Landing was a whole other story. Mama V greeted them, Lucia running for her fathers arms while Rogue grinned. Lucia talked the whole way back to the villa. Mark met them at the door, Mercurio in his arms and Rogue just couldn't resist. "Gimme the boy, and you go get your boy. Ah'll be out back with the kids."
Rogue adored Mark and Julio's home. The scenery, the weather, the relaxing feel of it. Merc and Lu played around on the grass while Rogue enjoyed the sunshine, lying out on the grass. "Hey." Used to Mark's sudden appearances, Rogue didn't startle too much. "You okay?" He was staring at her arm, and Rogue just nodded.
"Yeah, must've been a cosmic hint. Ah needed a break, think Ah got the message." And if she was a little worried about the fact that her bones shouldn't have been breakable, or the fact that she wasn't as powerful as she'd previously thought, well, that could wait for a while.
