I'm 30 years old (have been for a while now if you weren't paying attention). I live in a country where it's legal to buy alcohol from the age of 18, and since I don't look particularly young for my age or anything, I've never been asked to provide proof of age for buying stuff. Never. Until today. The checkout lady in tesco wouldn't let me buy ( Read more... )

Did she tell you why!!
Do you think she thought it was a miniature bottle of spirits?
I bet she felt a bit daft when she saw your age

She seemed a bit bemused at the till which told her she had to check age, and did seem a bit embarrassed when she saw how old I was:)

PS. Bizarre:) (Easier to play in scrabble that way, though that probably wasn't the motivation for choosing that spelling originally...)

... my vanilla extract doesn't have alcohol in it?

That's certainly a new one on me, I regularly get IDed (about once or twice a year) but I've never been IDed for cooking ingredients.

Then it's not extract, it's essence. Though both may require alcohol as part of the production process, if not part of the finished product, which is why things with vanilla flavours in aren't generally kosher or halal.

Yeah, probably. It was fancier stuff than I usually get. On further examination afterwards it does seem to be 35% alcohol, though the bottle is only 118ml.

I figured P wouldn't let you buy the much inferior extract, 35% is the necessary level to qualify as essence, iirc.

heh

see in cases like that, I'd ask for ID of the seller, to make sure they're old enough to sell me it

*Points at you and laughs*

Your shopping for the day proved two things: (a) You look older than 16, but younger than 18.  (b) They trust you more with a sharp metal object than things that contain alcohol. Eep! :)

To be fair, some employees are required to ID people if the customer looks younger than 35. Most don't ask for ID because they feel it's an awkward/embarassing situation.
