Capitol Fanfiction?

Wouldn't it be something if Capitol citizens were like one huge Hunger Games fandom? I mean, technically they were since they're the target audience entertainment-wise. But a fandom like today? They discussed the Games openly and passionately. They expressed themselves through art with all the body modifications, piercings, and tattoos, and ( Read more... )

never thought about it tbh, but it makes a lot of sense. They were in sensory overload, gluttons for the "next big thing" so I can imagine the internet and stuff would be a hot topic.

It'd be like the HG fandom concerning just the Hunger Games - no post-MJ or behind-the-scenes speculation. There wouldn't be quotes of Katniss' thoughts, only things she and everyone else has said on-camera. So it'd be limited from what we have now, but in a disturbing positive light.

Additionally, victors are treated like celebrities so I can easily see a bunch of Capitol people reacting to a gif of Finnick Odair the same way tumblr does with Tom Hiddleston or Josh Hutcherson or whoever. Candid snapshots from a Games would have long discussions and speculations, and three-second gifs would have in-depth breakdowns - all like we do now.

and it would be paparazzi like nothing we have now, the victors had absolutely no privacy, so I could see Snow using every sick and perverted thing he could as a way to boost ratings and fill his coffers. Scary

And they would think of the victors as their friends because they'd be so engrossed in that stuff. The Third Quell proved they developed deep attachments to 'their' victors. Meanwhile, the victors didn't want anything to do with them but had no choice but to deal with the paparazzi the same way they submitted to prostitution.

I've figured it's kind of ironic given the parallels between the Capitol and the way some of THG fandom is--the obsessive reblogging/fantasizing/RPF sense of ownership about celebrities, the sheer popularity of (even poorly written) Everlark smut and fluff over darker, grittier stuff addressing some of the realities of Panem--celebrity obsession and ignoring realities in favor of romantic fantasies? Sounds like the Capitol to me.

Exactly. I get so uncomfortable with all the SYOTs and fics about Careers just being… Careers because it's like those fans grasped virtually nothing in the series besides 'Peeta and Katniss love each other! The Careers are evil! Rue's death was the worst most horrible! Haymitch is a hilarious drunkard! Gale killed Prim! Team Peeta!!'

Fans exploring the darker, twisted stuff in a thoughtful way without exploiting it - that's something better and so much more interesting in comparison.

Yeah, every time I see another fluffy, shallow OOC AU where it's all about THE INEVITABLE MAGIC OF EVERLARK and totally ignoring the dark and terrible situations they endured that make their characters, and their romance, all the more meaningful, I just sigh. I mean, yes, K/P is important, but to make that the only thing that matters about the entire trilogy to the point of ignoring everything and everyone else? No. Not interested. And again, the irony's there--that's what the Capitol did. Obsessed over a romance to the point of ignoring, you know, the desperation out in the districts and twenty-two other children dying a pretty gruesome death.

Fandom, I tell you. Some days.
