Braintrust: Calling/Business Card Editing

Oct 29, 2010 12:42

As probably many of you know, I got a bunch of cards made up at VistaPrint a number of years ago through their 250 for "free" (something like $6 S&H) if you use one of their small selection of preset designs (which change) and allow them to print a reasonably subtle ad on the back of the card. The idea was to have something I could hand out at ( Read more... )

Man... A whole digit shorter than my ICQ number... (Yes, I still have it committed to memory). I think a buddy of mine traded down for a 5 digit one once.

Sorry, no truly useful feedback, though.
However -- I would list it as "most sites: /marcmagus" as the geeks will appreciate your thoroughness.

Why the '/'?

Perhaps "services" would be a better word...

Most sites seem to make your username a subfolder on the site... The pattern seems to be site.com/user/username or site.com/username

Of course, they don't all do it this way -- but I think it looks geekier with the /. YMMV

Got it. Yeah, that doesn't really work for what I'm going for:
  • LiveJournal and Dreamwidth have both moved over to username.site.com
  • I have the username with many services which aren't primarily used through a landing page with my name on it. e.g. Twitter, AIM and other messaging services [also a bunch of other things like BGG and assorted fora, but that's less in the way of giving someone my contact info].
Basically, I'm more interested in conveying the idea of username than that of site/subdomain.

I have one of those!

I've always particularly liked 'Heroes slain' and 'Spaghetti Detangled', but then, I frequently have spaghetti (yarn) that needs detangling.

No useful suggestions at current, but I will mull it over.

I seem to recall wanting your wanting something on there about flying carpet repair.

I have pretty much always loved "Dragons Rescued, Heroes Slain", ever since the first time I got one of your cards, whenever that was.

Andyeah. That.

I'm slightly tempted to drop that line because I don't know that it still works for me, but everybody loves it. I might just drop the last bit and not really worry about whether there's an explanation.

I just want to mention that if you want to be able to customize image & layout a little better, I really like iPrint. I started with VistaPrint & switched when I realized I could customize placement by the pixel for similar [price on iPrint. I use them for my professional business cards. I haven't done any comparison shopping lately so I have no idea if one is actually better/cheaper than the other anymore, but I thought I'd mention it.

On a random note, I've always wanted to get a set of social cards myself that included the title "Queen of the Blindingly Obvious." :)

I like the term "social card" and may steal it.

I always used "calling card", but social card seems more accurate, especially considering that my calling cards almost *never* have a phone number.
