That's what the father of the guy in Nebraska said, the one who killed all those people in a shopping mall.

Did he say it after or before the kid went postal?

If it is after, it seems as legitimate a way to respond as any, as he can't undo the shooting and his son is dead. It is something he (and everyone else) has to move past, as horrific as it was. What is he supposed to say "Well, I guess I got something wrong with my son, I'll try harder next time"?

I am not disagreeing with your assessment that there are many people who use religion as a excuse to dodge responsibility, but it isn't just religion or particularly limited to nouveau Christians. Some people blame their lacks on "the system", society, or whoever else they happen to be with relation to at the moment (parents, lover, coworkers, a stranger on BART). Sometimes it is accurate, sometimes it isn't.

oh, it was said beforehand, previous to the son's release from a mental institution. he was saying something along the lines of, "i commend you to god."

yeah, it's definitely not an isolated attitude.

also, the kid is dead, so there's nothing else to be done in relation to the son.
