Religious Extremism and Inside AIG

It's so hard to argue with people who cite holy sources. Makes me think of jihadists or Ann Coulter's desire for crusade. Demonize away people. To be fair I do think the Israelis have a right to intervene to stop rocket attacks. However they don't really consider how their blockade/enforcement of a ghetto in Gaza causes some of their problems ( Read more... )

...despite the self-righteous rhetoric, how much money this person has, right now.

11 years, for which, I would say, he has been renumerated to a level that, to the truly middle class, is dazzling. What is most startling to me is the sheer avrice of the people involved in all of this, for whom no amount of income was ever enough.

I continually wonder why someone who earns(ed), say, 20 million a year didn't just *retire*. That single payout would give them more lifetime income than 95% of the population of the US.

Or, really, lived off of *one* year's salary and donated the rest to charity.

I could live the rest of my life and have everything I actually want, all the time, on less than that.

Yah. This.

Because agreeing to work for $1 for a year is entirely meaningless if you'll quit if you don't get your $10 million bonus.

I mean, it's pretty meaningless anyway, because if you can afford to work for (essentially) nothing for a year for a company that is failing as badly as AIG is failing, then clearly you've been hideously overpaid for the last several years anyway. But that makes it even more meaningless.

I'm having difficulty understanding how he was the executive vice president of the financial products division and didn't notice that credit default swaps were a problem.

During the war, first the UN decried the Israeli use of white phosphorus, then looked at the situation again and said what they were doing was okay (in that the Israeli army was using it for non-lethal purposes), then condemned Israel for it again, then reversed stances again, and now has reversed stances AGAIN to say "Bad Israel! Bad!" As the UN is incredibly anti-Semitic, I'm honestly surprised they said it was okay a few times.

The actual truth of the matter as to whether white phosphorus was used in a legal or illegal matter will probably come out in a few years, when everyone has completely forgotten about the issue.

Yeah, I heard about that. It's not that surprising, though it is behavior to roundly and solidly condemn (though on the other side it seems to be OK, but we're not controlling the other side) and court-marshal a bunch of people over until it stops ( ... )
