“You keep staring at that thing as if it's a bomb,” Deena said, obvious amusement sparking her gray eyes. “It's not ticking, is it?”

April third. Liam had gone home almost a week ago. Chuck missed him. Now she had an excuse to call him--no, a reason, it was the country boy's birthday. That was definitely a reason not an excuse. Dialing the phone, the petite blonde had to wonder why her stomach felt full of butterflies and her throat suddenly felt dry if she was merely calling to tell her friend happy birthday.

Because you're a total lame-o, Chuck. She sighed as she listened to the call connect and the other end start to ring.

Liam had been sitting cross-legged on his bed with his biology textbook and notes, intending to do some reading for a quiz on Monday. When his cell phone went off and he saw who was calling, however, he set aside the book and stretched out to make himself comfortable. With a smile on his face, he flipped open the phone.

"Hey, Pixie Girl," he said, his voice mellow and husky. "I opened your present today."

Suddenly a little fishy key chain seemed like the most moronic gift in the world. Why had she sent him something like that? He couldn't possibly want...say hello, Chuck. "Happy birthday, Liam."

Despite her worrying over the gift and what he thought of it, the sound of his voice, warm and calm, made her smile. "I sent you the one fishy I can't kill. Smart, huh?"

He laughed softly. "I like him. Every time I start up my Jeep, I'll think of you."

Liam's voice, though light and teasing, had an undercurrent of something more serious. "Of course, that won't be the only time."
