Driving Mr Wandell 9/?

Warning: This is Alternative Universe-story. If you can't stand to see Kevin/Scotty/Others in situations that are Out Of Character, stay away and don't whine to me about it.

By Marea67
About: Mainly Kevin/Scotty
Rate: Depending on the chapter - This one: G
Disclaimer: Brothers & Sister belongs to ABC, but thanks to this AU Kevin/Scotty can at least kiss.
Summary: walkersfics  wondered: "How come even in AUs Kevin is always the one saving Scotty?" And though she has her own great storyline for that, it sure made me think: “What if….?”

*****

The funeral had been a sad affair, not so much because of the grief that should have been there, but because of the unrealistic appearance of it all. So, when it was all over Scotty couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. Standing aside to let other people say goodbye to Nora and the other Walkers he let his mind go over the ceremony.

Scotty had watched the theater-show that was played before him in a state of bewilderment, wondering if he should be annoyed by how fake the grieving was. Or if he should be amused that he could look right through it. He’s just glad that Kevin had remained stoic during the entire ceremony and hadn’t given in to his family’s need for drama.

Justin and Tyler had stayed close to Kevin and Scotty all the time. Nora had been the perfect widow, she had cried, her words, next to her husband coffin, had been well rehearsed, she had thanked everybody for coming and in general had taken it all with her head held high and her handkerchief close at hand to dab away the tears.

Kitty had made a bit of a spectacle of herself with her loud, hysterical crying. Tommy’s ‘emotional tears’ had been greeted with some eye-rolling from Kevin and Justin and they had both made themselves a bit smaller in the pews when Sarah spoke her strong father and the wonderful relationship he had had with all his children (angry glare at Kevin and Justin for making an indecent noise).

“Glad that is over.” Tyler interrupts Scotty's thoughts, as she hands him his cup of coffee.
“Me too.”
“I may be old-fashioned but I don’t believe they should play comedy at a funeral. It wasn’t the best timing for Tommy, Sarah and Kitty to perform their comical act.”

“It wasn’t even remotely funny.”
“Predictable through and through.” Tyler agrees.
“I have to admit that I can admire actors that can cry on demand.” Scotty sighs and Tyler chuckles.

“I know what you mean. So, how is Kevin really feeling?” Tyler asks and Scotty shakes his head.
“I don’t know, somehow his family wasn’t something he’d talk about. Though, now I understand why. What was William really like?”

“Obnoxious. Old-fashioned. Felt I should give up my job to give him grandsons. Not granddaughters, but grandsons. He was specific about that. Sarah and Tommy had already ‘failed’ him.”
“How?”

“Sarah had two daughters. That was not good enough. Tommy is sterile. He fell of his pedestal. Kitty didn’t want children. That was three down, two kids left to go. Kevin got stricken of the list. As a gay man he couldn’t have children… Don’t ask. I never quite got it either... So only Justin left to provide William with the grandchild he so badly wanted.”

“And you had a son….”
“… that we named after William’s gay son…. You should have seen his face when he realized that the only grandson he would ever had, would not ever be a William Walker…” She laughs and Scotty is amused as well.

From a little distance Kevin and Justin sees them talk and laugh.
“Are you sure you won’t come to the reading of the will?” Justin asks again.
“I’m sure. I don’t believe that dad will leave me anything more than a wasted youth and even more insults over my sexual orientation.

I’m done. I’ve packed everything. I’ve taken a few items from my room with me, but that’s all. The house itself holds nothing but dark ghosts and bad memories. I look at the people here and I feel detached from all of them. Mom was never really there for me and still cannot stand up for me.

I’m done with Tommy’s bullying and I could never get along with Sarah and Kitty anyway. I’ve never gotten to know Luc or Julia well enough and I can’t be bothered to do it now. You are the only person I want to stay in touch with. Tyler and you are an amazing couple and you and I have more in common with each other than with the others.”

Justin nods that he agrees. Kevin takes a piece of paper from his pocket and holds it out to Justin.
“This is my address and phone-number. I hope,…. that you’ll take it and stay in touch with me?” It’s a hesitant question, as if he’s afraid Justin will turn him down, but Justin takes it immediately and laughs as he picks a piece of paper from his own pocket.

“My address and phone-number. Please, bro, don’t be a stranger to me. Call me."
“I will.” Kevin laughs, amused that Justin and he both had the same idea.

“You and Scotty should fly to New York and stay a few days with us, so we can get to know each other better.”
“I’ll keep it in mind. Though I’ll come alone, Scotty is afraid of flying.”
“Alone or together. With him or someone else. You’ll always be welcome.”

There’s a quick, embarrassed hug between the two brothers and then Kevin and Scotty say goodbye to Justin and Tyler to look for Nora. They find her soon enough surrounded by some neighbors and Kevin gently asks if he can speak to her privately to say goodbye.

“Are you sure that you’re leaving? You can stay, you know. I know it’s tough, but it you’d get to know Tommy, you’ll see he’s not so bad.”
“Yeah, mom, I’m sure he’s a great guy, but I’ll pass. I’m done with him and with the others. Justin and I will stay in touch and I will call you too. But that’s it.”

“Kevin…” Nora starts, but Kevin softly places his hand on her mouth.
“I’m sorry, mom. There’s nothing left.” He says decidedly. She nods as she bites her lip.
“Okay….” Nora finally accepts, she’s in tears and this time Scotty just knows that the tears are real. He bows his head and leaves mother and son alone to say goodbye to each other.

Scotty shifts gear and looks at Kevin, who’s still quietly crying. Scotty can almost feel the tension leave Kevin’s body with each tear he cries.
“I’m so sorry.” Kevin eventually says. “I’m supposed to drive you. Not the other way around.”
“It’s okay. It’s been a weird day.” Scotty smiles.

“I didn’t think it would get to me like this.” Kevin sniffs.
“He was your father. What else did you expect?”
“I thought I hated him enough to not feel anything.”

“Hate is just a top-layer of veneer. It doesn’t take all the emotions away.” Kevin thinks about those words for a few seconds. Scotty is right. The hatred he had felt, hadn’t helped against the memories of hopelessness and sadness that washed over him, from the moment he had entered the house.

He closes his eyes and remembers how he had entered the study yesterday and he had seen his father lying there, ready to be taken the funeral-place. He only had a few more minutes with his dad and he hadn't planned on getting all emotional about it. He had looked down on the man who had made his life so miserable for so many years.

Death had taken away the age in his face and William had looked younger and more like Kevin had remembered him. It had been the same old, tired, grey face. The angry frown had been still on his face, as if etched into the skin. He had expected William to open his eyes and tell him to get out of his office, but it hadn’t happened.

Kevin sighs, he feels a headache come up. He’s glad Scotty is such a careful driver. He shifts a bit so he can lets his head rest against the back of the chair. He keeps his eyes closed, because it feels better to his swollen eyes. He’s unaware that Scotty watches him with repeated quick glances. He watches Kevin until Kevin is sound asleep.

“Hey, sleepyhead, wake up.” Scotty says softly leaning over Kevin. Kevin lifts his head and smiles. Neither of them knows who bridges the gap between them, but Scotty’s lips are on Kevin’s and what follows is a long sweet kiss that leaves Kevin wanting more, but Scotty breaks the kiss.

“Why don’t you to my place with me? We need to talk.” Scotty says and he seems nervous.
“Okay…” Kevin replies and he tries to ignore the warning-bells that scream that something is wrong.

He just follows Scotty in to the house. It’s not the first time that’s he’s been here, but usually only because he had to call Scotty. He had never stayed more that 5 minutes. Kevin looks around. The living-room is practical, with large chairs and a big couch, but it feels like a set up for a magazine and not like a house that is lived in.

“I… ah… have to go to the bathroom. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Scotty apologizes.
“Take your time.” Kevin smiles and he watches Scotty disappear. He looks at some of the framed pictures on one of the shelves, when a loud knock on the door makes him turn around.

Expecting it to be one of Scotty’s parents, Kevin opens the door, only to find a beautiful, young man standing on the threshold. The man laughs surprised.
“I haven’t seen Scotty in a couple of months, but I’m pretty sure you’re not him.” he jokes.

“No. I’m not Scotty.” Kevin can’t help but laugh.
“Phew! Good to know that….” The young man slips into the room and turns to Kevin. “And you are?”
“Kevin. I’m his chauffeur.”

“Ah! Yes! Of course! Wally told me all about you. Apparently Scotty is really satisfied with your work…..” He look Kevin up and down and grins: “I can see why. I have to admit I’ve often wondered about Scotty’s taste in men, but, honey, you’re cute.”
“Thank you, Mr…?” Kevin starts to feel a bit uncomfortable.

“In fact, I wouldn’t mind if Scotty did some sharing here.”
“Excuse me?”
“Oh, you know how it works. You sleep with one, you sleep with the other. And keep everything very discreet.”

Kevin’s jaw drops. Is this man seriously suggesting Kevin should sleep with him? As if the man guesses his shock, he laughs.
“I’m sorry. That was a bit rude of me. I didn’t even introduce myself. I’m Jason McCallister…” he says, as if that explains everything and when he sees it doesn’t, he continues: “…. Scotty’s fiancé?”
