“I’m sorry it took so long, I just needed ….” Scotty’s sentence stops midway and he looks at the person in the middle of the room. “Jason? What are you doing here? Thought you wouldn’t be here until Christmas, which is in … four days?”
“I wanted to surprise you.” Jason replies with a cheerful smile.
Scotty looks around.
“Where’s Kevin?”
“You mean that drop-dead gorgeous chauffeur of yours? Man, if you’re not sleeping with him, I’ll take him.”
“Jase..” Scotty’s voice is more loving than Jason's words deserve and Jason shrugs.
“He had some errant to run, he said. Guess he wanted to give us some space… He was a bit surprised, it would seem, to see your fiancé show up.”
“Please tell me you didn’t tell him you’re my fiancé?!”
“Why not? Technically speaking, I am just that. We are engaged.”
“Jason!” Scotty yells exasperated and he grabs his coat. “I got to find him.”
“What? Scotty! .... What is going on?” Jason asks, but Scotty brushes right past him and runs away.

Kevin leans against the door and breathes deeply. He can’t believe it! He feels so stupid! Scotty has a boyfriend? He never even mentioned it! Kevin wants to cry, because he feels used, but after the tears he cried earlier, he feels drained. Besides, he can’t fully wrap his head around it just yet.
Of course, now it makes sense why Scotty never said any words of love, he probably keeps those for that Jason? Why did Scotty have to be cruel? Kevin understands that they weren’t really lovers, he has no idea what they are, probably just two lonely souls and that was all that was to it.
But Scotty knows about his past. Why had he not been honest with Kevin? Why all the lies? Yes, maybe Kevin and Scotty hadn’t really been lovers, but after all that had happened, Kevin had at least expected Scotty to be his friend. However, before Kevin can think it over some more, there’s a knock on the door. It’s Scotty.
“Kevin, we need to talk.” Scotty says, as the tries to get in.
“I’m fine.” Kevin replies, barring him from entering.
“No, you’re not. I’m sorry, you weren’t supposed to find out like this. That’s why I asked you in. I needed to talk to you. I planned to tell you all about Jason and…”
“Before or after you fucked me?”
“Kevin,…”
“Don’t bother. It makes no difference. Regardless of when you would have told me, I would have been the third party in this.
I find that unacceptable, Scotty. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but I’m not going to be some thing that keeps you warm in bed, until the man you love comes home.”
“Kevin, you were never that. If you just let me explain….”
“There’s nothing to explain.”
“Yes, there is.”
“No, there isn’t. You have a fiancé and regardless of what 'mutual understandings' you two have made between each other, I’m not going to be a part of it…. I know you’re not in love with me, I know I’m just an employee, but damned, I also believed that we had become friends…”
“We are….”
“Oh? Do you always screw your friends behind your boyfriend’s back or does he usually get to watch you do it?! It may be your kind of game, but it isn’t mine.”
“Kevin… just … please…”
“If I no longer have sex with you, will you fire me?”
“What?! No! … No, of course not.. Don’t be like this.”
“Then, Mr Wandell, I suggest you join your fiancé and be with him, so our relationship can return to being strictly professional.” Kevin replies stiffly…
Scotty feels as if Kevin just punched him.
“This isn’t over…. But … I understand you’re hurt and angry… I’m sorry that I’m the cause of that pain… But this conversation is not over… I will leave you alone for now, but we need to talk… But only after you’ve cooled down and you are more willing to listen to reason….”
Kevin can see that Scotty tries to get control of the situation again and he smiles cynically.
“There is no need to ‘listen to reason’. We’ve known each other for several months now, yet you never mentioned that you had a boyfriend, let alone a fiancé.”
“It just …. Never came up.” Scotty says, realizing how lame his words are.
“Never came up?!?! "Kevin spits the words out. "I now remember him. He’s the communications director for this brother Senator Robert McCallister, the Democrat that is now running for President.... I’m not completely stupid.
We’ve repeatedly discussed the Senator's speeches, what we agreed with or didn’t agree about, and, yes, you mentioned that you knew Senator McCallister, but somehow ‘it doesn’t come up’ to tell me that you sleeping with his brother? And that you’re planning a future with this Jason? It never came up…?! You purposely never mentioned it, so you could sleep with me.”
Scotty is taken aback by the accusatory tone of Kevin’s voice and even Kevin wonders if perhaps he hasn’t crossed a line. He never asked about Scotty’s private life. Maybe he didn’t want to know. It’s not exactly like he can call Scotty a liar, because he never denied having a boyfriend, but he never mentioned it either.
Scotty opens his mouth to defend himself, but instead bows his head.
“I’m sorry.” His eyes betray that his apology is sincere and Kevin can see it, but he’s not ready to forgive and forget just yet.
“Goodnight, Mr Wandell.” Kevin says overly polite and he closes the door.
“Goodnight, Kevin.” Scotty whispers to a closed door.
*****
Scotty enters his own house again and he sees Jason sitting on his couch.
“Okay, what is going on?” Jason asks as he jumps up. “I don’t like getting shoved aside like that.”
“Why did you tell him you’re my fiancé?”
“Because I am.”
“That happened several years ago! And we both know it’s not for real.”
“Scotty! Why are you so upset? We’ve been playing this game for 8 years. We both agreed to this. We would be each other’s ‘steady partner’ in the eyes of our parents, so that they would stop trying to set us up with potential ‘good partner’ of their choice... And so that they would leave us alone. It would give us the freedom to make our own choices … and mistakes.
With you here in LA and afraid of flying, there was no really worry about interference with my life in Washington or on the road. You wanted to build your life here in LA, while I was busy working for my brother. We had the perfect excuse to not work out the details of our 'engagement'. It's not fair that you suddenly act as if I did something stupid without consulting you.” Jason defends himself. Scotty gives him a guilty look.
“I know… You’re right. I agree, but… I wish I could have talked to Kevin before you sprang the news on him.”
“Sprang the news on him?! Please, tell me, that he knew about me.” Jason asks curious.
“I never even mentioned you. I only told him our family knew yours.”
“Well, that’s not exactly a lie, but …. Scotty? … You didn’t tell him about me?”
“No.”
“Yet, you told me about him.”
“Yes.” Scotty looks miserable.
Jason’s brain sifts through the information handed to it and it makes Jason draw a conclusion.
“Is he… ‘the one’? … I mean, if he is, it’s fine with me, we both agreed that we’d quit this game, if we’d meet ‘the one’. Is he it?”
“I don’t know…” Scotty sighs.
“You… Don’t… Know?”
“It’s complicated.”
“No it’s not, he either is or he isn’t. And if he’s not, then have sex with him, but don’t get involved otherwise.”
“He’s a complicated person and I’m not sure about his feelings. …. We had a few rather…. ahm … intimate moments… but most of the time we are just total strangers.. It’s so weird.”
“How intimate were you two exactly?”
Scotty quickly tells him and Jason starts to laugh.
“Wow! Scotty! I’m impressed, honey.”
“It’s not funny.” Scotty says, slightly insulted. Recognizing that maybe he had pushed it a bit too far, Jason tones down his teasing.
“What will you do now?” Jason asks.
“I have no idea. He won’t even talk to me… He’s been through so much in his life… He finally trusted me and then…”
“I came and ruined it all.”
“I swear, I asked him up here to tell him about you and tell him how I feel about him and ask him how he feels about me…”
“And you hoped it would result in some good hot sex… Now, don’t be mad, be honest.” Jason laughs at Scotty’s annoyed frown.
“I wanted to explain to him that I owed it to you, to deal with you first, before even considering a real relationship with him. If he’s even interested in that.. I didn’t want make the mistake of breaking off my engagement with you for no reason at all…. And, alright. I guess… I hoped there would somehow be hot sex… yes…” Scotty admits, sulking a bit.
“I could help you out with the sex, but I don’t think that is what you need right now.”
“No. It isn’t.” Scotty sighs. “Thanks for the thought though.”
“Hey, it will be alright. We’ll fix this. I promise.”
“I’m not so sure.” Scotty replies with a sad face.

When there’s a knock on his door, Kevin jumps up. He quickly wipes away his tears and opens the door. Against all odds, he hopes it will be Scotty, but instead, it’s someone even more unlikely to have standing before him.
“Justin! Why are you here? Weren’t you supposed to be on your way to New York by now?”
