“My name is Scotty Wandell. My husband, Kevin Walker. should be in here by now?” There’s so much urgency in Scotty's voice that he trips over his own words. The nurse at the desk looks up. Seriously, his husband? As if! The few words that Scotty has spoken have already rubbed her the wrong way.

Good Christian as she is, she despises homo-sexuality. It is after all sinful behaviour. Her hand moves to the cross on her necklace, as if Scotty is some vampire that needs to be chased off. Scotty sees her movement and, for one moment he’s too flabbergasted to respond, but he’s not in the mood for a fight, so he shifts to another gear.

“My … partner… was injured in an accident. All I know is that he would be brought here? Can you please tell me if he has arrived and, if so, where he is?” Maybe this will be a less offensive approach. The nurse still doesn’t answer and just when Scotty is ready to use some extreme violence, he feels a hand on his back and Tommy leans over the nurse’s desk.

“My name is Thomas Walker. My brother Kevin is supposed to be here. Tell me where. Or do you have issues with brothers as well?”
“Room 104. Down that hall.” She answers quickly, worried to find herself opposite two rather aggressive looking men now.

“Thank you, mrs…. Jerrell?” Tommy reads the name-label on her blouse. “Sarah, write down this woman’s name. I will register a formal complaint as soon as I can.” Tommy barks, loud enough for everyone in the reception-area to hear. “This is not the time or the place to be homophobic. Come, bro, let’s find your husband.”

He places his hand on Scotty’s back and pushes him towards room 104.
“I could have killed her..” Scotty mutters angrily.
“Forget it. Kevin needs you now…” Just before they arrive at room 104, a doctor exits the room and they all stop.

The doctor looks at them, a question in his eyes. He’s prepared for quite some things on a day like this, but this large group - consisting of Sarah, Luc, Paige, Cooper, Tommy, Elizabeth, Scotty, Olivia and Daniel - form quite a wall to run into.
“You’re here for a patient?”

“Kevin Walker? Should be in 104?” Scotty’s voice trembles.
“You form a too large group to enter in here." He looks at Sarah. “Are you his wife?”
“No, I’m his sister. Scotty Wandell is his husband.” Sarah points at Scotty, still annoyed over what happened with the nurse.

“Ah, right. Sorry, I hadn’t thought of that possibility.” The doctor apologizes. “Very well then. You’re all family?”
“Brother, sister, in laws, kids and cousins.” Tommy replies. The doctor nods again and gently ushers them to the waiting-area.

“They found Mr Walker next to his car…. We don’t know what is wrong with him. We can’t find any physical reasons for the state he's in. He seemed able to move. Nothing seems broken. We believe that his current situation is a more psychological one …”
“Because..? I mean, what is wrong with him?”

“He doesn’t respond to anything. He just stares in the distance and he doesn’t reply to anything. We tried to question him, but it’s like he doesn’t hear us… I mean, Mr Walker isn't  deaf or something?"
"No, but even if he had been, he would have responded to touch or a face appearing before him."

The doctor looks at Paige after her sharp assessment of his question.
"I agree." He smiles. "Is Mr Walker under some medical treatment?”
“No.” Scotty shakes his head.

“Has he had a traumatic experience lately?” Scotty doesn’t reply, but a wave of guilt over the cheating, their arguments, Michelle and Daniel all come flooding back to him.
“We were involved in a serious car-crash two years ago?” Sarah suggests. “It killed my brother in law, caused brain-damage to a business-associate of ours and left a lot of us injured.”

The doctor nods, that could be it.
“I will allow one of you in that room, to be with him.” He answers, glad to see that everyone immediately looks at Scotty. At least, there won’t be arguements over this.
“That will be me.” Scotty replies.

But when he gets up, he suddenly feels panic rise. The room starts to spin around him. He sinks back on the chair and covers his mouth with his hand and breaths superficially.
“Easy there, Scotty.” Sarah rubs his back. “Easy. Take a deep breath. It’s been a long day. But you can do this…”

Scotty nods, grateful that Luc quickly gets him a cup of water. He gulps the cold water down and tries to control his anxiety.
“I’m sorry.. It's just… It got to be too much….” He stammers as he wipes away his tears.
“It’s been a bad day for all of us, Scotty. We understand. You’re not superman.”

Tommy’s calm words make Scotty calm as well. He nods and tries to get up again.
“I’m fine. I can do this.” He replies. The doctor takes him by the elbow and keeps an eye on him. Scotty looks pale, but confident enough, however, there’s no reason to not be careful with this young man. They stop in front of the door and the doctor turns Scotty towards him.

“Mr Wandell, you have to understand that your husband may not react to you either. Don’t be discouraged by this. Just keep talking to him. Don’t accuse him, don’t get angry or upset… If there were any issues between you before the quake, this is not the time to bring them up.” The doctor warns.

“I understand that, but we didn’t have issues, so there’s no reason to get mad at him.” Scotty answers. “But, thank you, for telling me. At least I am prepared for that.” He takes a deep breath and the doctor opens the door for him and though Scotty was ready for quite a lot, seeing Kevin sitting there breaks his heart.

He has wrapped his arms around his legs as if he tries to make himself as small as possible. He stares at the wall and doesn’t look up when the doctor and Scotty enter. His eyes are big and Scotty almost thinks that Kevin doesn’t seem to be able to blink anymore either.

Scotty carefully approaches the bed and he opens his mouth to talk to Kevin, but his voice refuses to cooperate. He brings his hand to his mouth again. Kevin seems so far away, so out of reach. He feels the doctor’s hand on his back.
“Please, try to talk to him, Mr Wandell. I know it’s hard, but try…”

Scotty gathers all his strength and courage.
“Kevin..?” He’s shocked by now frail his own voice sounds in the quiet room. He prepares himself for the wall of silence that must come from Kevin. Instead, Kevin blinks a few times. His lips part and his eyes search for Scotty.

Kevin breathes out, as if he’s been holding his breath all along.
“Scotty?” He looks up at him. “I…” Kevin breathes heavily. “I had an accident.... It was an accident.”
“Of course, baby. There was an earthquake....”

“One moment I was looking at you, and you were asleep. You looked so peaceful…” Scotty realizes that Kevin is not with him just yet. “I only took my eyes of the road for one second, Scotty, I swear, just to look at you. I love you so much… and then all those red lights. Cars stopped so quickly. I hit the brakes, I saw you tumble, I saw your panic. I heard you scream and …. and…”

His voice breaks, his tears finally come and Scotty is with him in one second, wrapping his arms around him.
“It’s alright, baby, I got out alive. We both did.” Scotty says.
“I could have killed you..” Kevin cries.

“But you didn’t. It was an accident. A car cut off Robert, who crashed his car, Holly couldn’t stop on time and hit Robert. I woke up the moment I heard you gasp and you hit the brakes. I was just dozing, not really asleep. It was just a fraction of a second, but I saw that you did everything you could to not slam into Holly’s car.

You turned the wheel, but it went too radical and the car toppled. And, yes, I screamed, but so did you, honey. A natural reaction, baby. Shhh… You did everything you could, baby, but it was too late for Holly...  and Robert…” Kevin cries even louder. “There was nothing else you could do…” Scotty whispers one more time.

The doctor stands at the door and watches how Scotty tenderly rocks Kevin his arms. He looks at the pictures taken at the site of the accident. It’s a miracle that Mr Walker got out alive, he realizes, when he sees how mangled all the other cars are. Five people are dead, two severely injured and only Kevin walked out with some scratches and bruises.

If he has well understood the police-officer, who had been at the crash-site, then a large black Jeep had been on the path to ram Kevin’s car, while Kevin was still in it. If that had happened, Kevin wouldn’t have had a chance to get out alive. Instead, another car hit the black Jeep in the side, just before it slammed into Kevin’s car.

This obviously changed the trajectory of the black Jeep and it had missed Kevin’s car and it had crashed on another car. Yes, Mr Walker had been one lucky guy today. He could have been dead, but he's still alive. He takes a deep breath and decides to leave the two men alone for just a few minutes…
