***** PART 1/4 *****
The phone rings and Scotty looks up from his recipe-book.
“Olivia? Can you get that one?” He asks, slightly annoyed that the phone is way out of his reach.
“Hello?” Olivia asks, after picking up. “Yes…. No… Just wait, please.”
She hands the phone over to Scotty.
“Who is it, sweetie?” Scotty asks.
“I don’t know.” Olivia shrugs, but when she sees that the information is insufficient she volunteers as extra information: “She’s crying.”
Immediately Scotty fears the worst. Kitty? Oh, please, let Kitty’s recent tests turn out to be just fine… But would she really call them with that sort of news? Wouldn’t she be calling Nora instead? Maybe it’s Nora? Or Sarah? No, they’d immediately go for Kevin’s cell-phone.
His mother? …. For a second Scotty entertains the thought that it could be Bertha, but he dismisses it as ‘too unlikely’.
“Hello?... Yes, this is Scotty Wandell….” The woman starts to cry again and Scotty can’t make heads or tails about her words. The only thing he gets to understand is that it’s not someone he knows.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t understand a word you say….” He tries carefully. She starts again and somewhere there’s something he vaguely recognizes, but he can’t put his finger on it. “Miss, please, try and calm down, I really don’t understand what you’re talking about.” Scotty says as gently as he can. She hangs up.

“Alors, this is the perfect moment, Sarah.” Luc Laurent coos and Sarah knows he’s trying to persuade her to change her mind. “Joe wants to take Paige and Cooper camping for their last week of the holidays. …. This means we can leave too. Can you think of anything more romantic than 7 days in ‘la douce France’? With my family? And me?”
Yes, well, go camping with the kids is Joe’s idea. Sarah still isn’t sure if she agrees with it. The mere thought of her kids alone with Joe, somewhere, in some dark, scary forest, makes her shiver. It’s not that she doesn’t trust Joe. Joe has gone hiking and mountain-climbing all his life and has a strong survival-instinct, but, damn, these are her kids too….
“Sarah….” Luc begs as only he can. She feels her defenses crumble.
“I’ll have to think it over….” She says, not ready to commit to a decision just yet. “I’m still not sure if leaving the kids with Joe will be a good idea… I want to be close, just in case.”
“I’m not a mother, ….” Luc starts and Sarah smiles, because his words sound funny to her. “… but what do you wish to do here? At home? Wait by the phone until they come home? Joe is a good father, … you’ve always said that….” Sarah nods, hating when Luc throws her own words back at her.
“… He will take very good care of the children. They are safe. So, why don’t we take that last week and go to France…?” Luc reasons. Sarah still has doubts…. “Sarah, what do you want to do? Run after them? Spy on them from behind a tree? He’s remarried, so are you… With me… I’m proud of you and us and I want to show off my beautiful bride to my father…”
Sarah sighs, knowing that Luc’s words make sense. Joe is a good father, Paula does take good care of Paige and Cooper. Gabe will be there as well. The kids are very excited over the thought to spend their holidays in the forest, though Paige less than Cooper. Plus, Sarah has to admit that she’s been dying to meet Luc’s father… She sighs again.

Taylor had stopped listening about 30 seconds ago, somewhere between ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘… have to let you go…” she lost track of the message. Is this man, her boss, really telling her that she’s fired? Something about the ‘bad economic situation’ tries to get a grip on her brains and the ‘insufficient number of guests’ sound familiar to her as well.
She snaps out of her moment just when her manager tells her:
“…. It’s nothing personal, Taylor, you’re extremely good at your job and you are well liked and this decision was a hard one to take, but in all fairness Rosario is your senior in years and …. I’m so sorry….
We of course wish to give you all opportunity to seek other employment. We therefore let you go now, you can pack your personal possessions here. We will give you one extra month of wages.” Tyler understands. The hotel is afraid that she’ll mess things up or complain to guests. They want her gone. Today.
Tyler nods numbly. She lost her job. She. Lost. Her. Job… No. It still is unreal. She stiffly gets up, hoping her legs will hold her until she’s back in her own little office. She thanks her boss for his honesty. No. Really? Fired. Unreal. She smiles courageously and leaves the office without looking back.
In her office she goes straight to her desk and she starts to pack all her personal possessions, not that there are that many lying around. To her, her office had always been ‘work’ and not ‘home’. The door opens and one of the employees rushes in.
“Miss Altamirano…” she holds up some documents, but stops when she sees Tyler’s face.
“Give them to Rosario. I’m no longer working here.” She says, feeling suddenly slightly bitter. Four bleeping years had she worked here! She had run it as best as she could! She had received plenty of good reviews! She knows she had! She watches how her colleague quietly leaves the room again. It’s not fair! At that moment the tears come.

Kevin lets his hands slide over a box, remembering his talk with Kitty.
“So, this is it?” Kevin asks.
“Yes. This is what I found when I used Justin’s key.”
“This is the prove that Robert had, that Stanton was a fraud?”
“Apparently.” Kitty says carefully. “What are you going to do with it?”
“Don’t know yet.” Kevin replies and he lets the box roll between his hands. “I don’t know. I guess I have to deal with the reality of it all. Give Robert’s death some place and purpose.”
“Listen, I don’t want any trouble with Stanton. I’m happy with my life, happy with Seth and Evan. I don’t need anyone to screw that up. I have to focus on my child, my unborn baby, my boyfriend and the possibility that I might need treatment again. Or not. I can’t be distracted by the likes of Stanton.” Kitty warns Kevin and Kevin nods that he understands.
The memory of Kitty’s words makes that Kevin opens the box again. There are the tapes, the reason why Robert died, Kevin is sure of that. The anger and bitterness nearly chokes him and he closes the box again, waiting for his hands to stop trembling. He’s going to get Stanton for Robert’s death. He will make Stanton pay.

“Paige! Cooper! Your mom is here.” Paula yells and she turns to Sarah, who is at Joe and Paula’s house to pick up her children. “They’re busy packing their things….” She says apologetically. “Thank you, that Joe and I can take them camping. It means a great deal to Joe.”
“The kids were so excited about the possibility. I wouldn’t have known how to say ‘no’ to Cooper after Joe had suggested it to them.” Sarah answers with a fake smile.
“Of course.” Paula reacts politely. Joe should have discussed it with Sarah first, Paula can recognize that, but she will not admit to that to Sarah.
The relationship between her and Sarah has always been rather tense. Though Paula had no reason to be mad at Sarah, because Sarah and Joe only got involved after she and Joe got divorced, somehow their relationship has always been rather tense. Of course, Joe moving back in with Paula after breaking up with Sarah, hadn’t helped the situation.
Not even Sarah’s marriage to Luc seems to help make things run more smoothly between them. Both Sarah and Paula are painfully polite, never hostile, but never warm either. They just never seem to have anything to say to each other.
“Sarah!” Sarah turns around and she’s face to face with her stepson Gabe.
“Gabe! Been a while.” She says surprised and she replies to his hug.
“Yeah, been very busy with school and all. Congrats on your marriage, by the way. Paige and Cooper really seem to like him. Luc, right?” Sarah nods enthusiastically.
“How’s school?” She asks.
“Good. Haven’t really figured out what I want to do just yet, I suppose something to do with business.”
“Well, if you need any help….?” Sarah offers and Gabe smiles thankfully.
“Careful. I might take you up on that.” Gabe laughs.
“Anytime you want.” Sarah laughs. Her relationship to Paula might be difficult, but the one with Gabe runs more smoothly. Even Paula becomes less icy now that her son displays his genuine affection for Sarah.
“He’s got such good grades.” She proudly tells Sarah.
“I think that is one of the things that we want as mothers. That our kids get good grades, so that there’s one less worry on our minds.” Sarah nods.
“Exactly.” Paula agrees whole-heartedly and whatever else she planned to say gets lost because Paige and Cooper come down the stairs to greet Sarah.

“Oh, wow, that sucks.” Justin replies sympathetically when Tyler tells him she lost her job. Dan raises an eyebrow. “Losing your job just sucks, especially if you love your job.” He tells Tyler, so he can simultaneously provide Dan with some information. Dan agrees quietly that it sucks and once again Justin is surprised how well he and Dan get along.
They usually just need half a word to understand each other, which is really helpful in stressful situations.
“Sorry, Tyler, I have to hang up. We’re needed.”
“I’ll talk to you later.” Tyler still cries softly before ending the conversation.
“Man, that sucks for your girl-friend.” Dan says. Justin nods, holding on to his seat-belt, while Dan speeds through the streets of Los Angeles. The sirens blare and Justin can see how most people move aside for them. He closes his eyes a few times, when it seems that cars don’t move as fast as Dan would wish them to.
“Hey! We have a victim who needs our help and we won’t be able to give it to him, or her, if you kill us.” He yells at Dan. Dan merely shrugs and slows down. For a moment Justin thinks it’s because of his words, but then he sees, that it’s because they have arrived where they should be.
“Overdose! It’s an overdose!” A woman yells hysterically. Dan acknowledges her words, even though he can’t help but think that everyone is a paramedic these days and they all seem to want to tell him what to do. “Justin, I need….” He looks over his shoulder to find Justin, but Justin seems to just be standing there, frozen to the ground.
“Justin! … Justin! I need you. Now. Snap out of it!” He yells. Justin blinks and a second later he’s next to the victim alongside Dan. “What is it?” Dan asks, automatically doing what needs to be done.
“I knew him. He…. We did drugs together…. He never got out….”
Dan gives Justin a quick look-over, concerned about Justin, but Justin sees it and smiles.
“I’m okay. It was just a shock, that’s all, but I’m right here… Let’s get him to the hospital asap and make sure he makes it.” Justin suggests.
“Sounds like a good plan to me.”

Kevin walks into the kitchen and grabs Scotty by the elbow to get his attention.
“Kevin…” Scotty’s voice makes him know that he’s busy.
“I just want you to listen. I just got a call from Andy, an ex-colleague at ‘Carter, Wright and Duprée’.”
“Why?” Scotty asks, not taking his eyes off his 4 frying-pans.
“Does the name Wesley Corvin mean anything to you?” Scotty frowns, thinks hard and then shakes his head.
“It sounds familiar but that’s about all. Why?”
“He died. He left you something in his will.”
“What?! … Why?”
“Don’t know. But Andy asked if we could be in the office tomorrow, say 10 o’clock? I said I wasn’t sure it was convenient to you. Said I’d call him back.”
“I’m curious. I wish I could….” Scotty stops mid-sentence and shakes his head. “Now I remember, the woman on the phone this morning mentioned that name too. What did you say the name was exactly?”
“Wesley Corvin.”
“It has something familiar, but I can’t place it. Alright. Make the appointment.”
“We’ll know more tomorrow.”
“I hope so, because I’m dying to know who he is and why he would leave me something in his will.” Scotty laughs.
