***** Part 1/4 *****
The teacher enters the class. A boy follows her. He peeks at his new classmates.
“Everyone, this is Roderick Kerr. He prefers to be called Roddy. And he’s new to our class. Class, say hello to Roddy.” She says and a wave of voices greet Roddy. “We have two places for you to sit. Either next to Sandra? Or next to Cooper?”
With a little ‘well, duh’ face, he walks up to the empty space next to Cooper and puts down his schoolbag. The two boys look at each other, each wondering what the other has to offer. Cooper is the first to smile and Roddy sits down and Cooper shows him exactly where they are with their history.

“This does feel weird.” Holly says, putting down her cup on Nora’s kitchen-table.
“I know. I’ve been thinking about William a lot since you called….”
“Sorry.” Holly apologizes.
“No, don’t worry, it’s all good. It was too easy to pretend it hadn’t happened.”
“I certainly didn’t mean to open up old wounds.”
“I know, but it is good to go back sometimes. I’m happy that Brody is back in my life, he’s an amazing man. Very sweet and I love him and I believe that I’ve forgotten that my life with William wasn’t all bad.”
“And I’m happy with David, I truly am, and I guess I should be happy that I can’t remember so much of my time with William, but I’m not. It’s like a song-title or a singer whose name is on the tip of your tongue and you just can’t remember. And I keep trying and trying.. and it gets so frustrating.
I tell myself to stop it, to let it go, that I shouldn’t push it, that it will come to me eventually, but it’s like an obsession, especially now that I’m alone and I have more time to think things through…”
“We’re going to find a solution.” Nora smiles.

After a quick knock, Scotty enters Kevin’s office, with some coffee.
“Are you and Tommy still not talking to each other?”
“No.”
“Come on, Kevin, it’s been three days.”
“If he wants to apologize, he knows where I am.”
“Kev, be the wiser one.” Scotty advices, but his words only seem to make Kevin angry.
“What is it exactly that I’m supposed to apologize for? For the fact that Julia decides to talk to me first? That is her choice not mine.”
“I know, sweetie, but if it is that important to Tommy, can’t you just back away from Elizabeth? Just a little bit?”
“Why should I? Again, they come looking for me, not the other way around. All of Tommy’s accusations are ridiculous.”
“Elizabeth does love you a lot though. I can understand his jealousy.”
“Again, that is not my fault. I like her a lot too. Am I treating her differently from how I would treat Paige, Cooper or Evan? I don’t believe I do, but if I do, then tell me honestly and I’ll apologize to Tommy straightaway.”
“No.” Scotty has to admit that Kevin doesn’t show preferences.
“So, what is it I’m supposed to apologize for? For being an uncle? I’m not going to do that. It is too ridiculous for words. Elizabeth loves Justin too, is he the next one banned from seeing her?”
“Of course not, he’s not her biological father.”
“And because I am, I’m somehow the bad guy in all this?” Kevin asks and Scotty gives up, able to see and understand both sides.
“Okay, don’t apologize, but at least say ‘hello’ when you see each other?” Scotty offers.
“I tried that. He turned his back on me. If he wants to be petty… I’m much better at being petty than he is.” But as Kevin speaks those words, he slowly starts to smile. To prove his point, he pouts at Scotty, who starts to laugh, glad that Kevin isn’t angry at him and that he can still approach the topic with his usual sense of humor.
“Yes, you are.” Scotty says and he kisses the top of Kevin’s head. “I just don’t want any troubles here. I’m swamped as it is at the hotel and I sincerely don’t have the time to run after my staff over there and unruffle feathers here.” Scotty rubs his face, but he can’t take away the darker lines under his eyes, that reveal that he hasn’t had enough sleep.
“At the risk of sounding childish… He started it!...” Kevin replies, though he softens when he sees the disappointed look on Scotty’s face, Kevin sighs and gives in. “No promises, but … I’ll try talking to him. Again.” Scotty smiles, knowing that Kevin is doing this for Scotty and not for himself.
“Thanks. I love you.” Scotty quickly kisses Kevin and is already moving back to the door. “Now I got to go back to the hotel.”
“Wait up!” Kevin jumps up and catches Scotty at the door, closing the door, so Scotty can’t leave.
“Kev…”
“Shhh.” Kevin takes his husband in his arms and kisses him. Scotty lets him for a few seconds, but pushes Kevin gently back when it lasts too long.
“Kevin… I have to go.”
“Scotty, you told me to tell you when things get out of hand. And I’m telling you now, this is getting to be too much. You’re hardly home, you’ve barely seen the kids, our conversations have become one-liners. You’re at the hotel almost 24/7. I’d like to free up one evening for the kids and me.”
“This week will be very busy…”
“Yes, and hopefully, so will the next week be and the week after that. After all, the plan is to attract more and more people, but, Scotty, …. You have a family that needs you too.
Olivia and Daniel haven’t seen you in days. You’re asleep when they wake up, you’re gone by the time they come home and they are asleep when you come home. I’m hitting the breaks.”
“You think I don’t miss the kids?” Scotty asks, almost offended.
“I know you do miss them. So, one night! It is all I ask for. One night in your busy schedule. I know you have a lot to do and that you really want to make this work, but it is just one night…. Please.” Scotty looks at Kevin and calms down. It is true that he had asked Kevin to tell him if he got too involved…
“I’ll see what I can do. There is one person right now, that I am considering making a sous-chef, and maybe put in a position to take over my work on the nights that I’m not there. However, I still think he’s a little too insecure. Maybe, I should give him a trial-run. Let me think it over?” He kisses Kevin quickly.
“I’m sorry, I have to leave. I have a meeting.” Scotty then apologizes. Kevin isn’t ready to let go of Scotty that easily. He manages to steal a few minutes with a few more kisses, until they reach the front-door of the restaurant and Scotty leaves, more aroused than is good for him.

Luc quickly prepares a sandwich, hoping he will have had a chance to eat, before Sarah comes home, but he has no such luck. He sees her enter and for a moment they make eye-contact, but Sarah decides to hang up her coat first. He can hear her sigh and then return to the kitchen.
“Luc, we have to talk.”
“There is nothing to talk about… You’ve made it very clear where your priorities are.” Luc says and Sarah clenches her fist, digging her nails in her skin to focus on staying calm.
“Seriously, Luc, what could I have done?”
“I don’t know, Sarah.” He answers. “I understand your feelings. Gabe needed help. You had to be there.”
“I couldn’t very well send Joe the hospital with his broken leg, could I?”
“You could have asked Nora to go? Or Kevin? Or Justin?”
“He’s my stepson!”
“I’m your husband!”
“I still consider Gabe as one of my children. I may not have given birth to him, but he’s a part of my family.
Are you seriously telling me that you would have preferred me to ignore someone in my family, who’s in pain, because I had to hold your hand over a couple paintings?” She nearly spits out the word. Luc has to admit to not having an answer. He’s just angry that she wasn’t there.
“Perhaps I would have liked it to be offered the choice.” Luc says. “Could you not have called me and explain to me what was going on with Gabe, so we could have discussed it and .. most likely come to the same solution as what happened, but it would have felt like I had a say in this.”
“So, now I need your permission to go to the hospital with my step-son?”
“No. Not my permission, just my knowing about it upfront, rather than running after the facts. If I would have known, I could have simply said that my wife had a family-emergency. I felt so stupid having to tell people that I didn’t know where you were.”
“Luc, I’m sorry if you feel somehow ‘left out’, but even if I had been there, it wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the exhibition. Your work would still have been considered ‘uninspired’. And you can be mad as much as you’d like, but that is the real reason for your anger. And I would prefer it if you wouldn’t take that anger out on me or my kids.”
Luc blinks at the sudden change of topic. He hadn’t seen that one coming, though perhaps he should have. Of course, Sarah would steer away from her responsibility and go for his flaws instead.
“Did you think they were bad?” He asks in rather confrontational voice.
“No. But then, I’m not a critic. I’m your wife, just a woman who loves what you make.” She replies calmly. “And perhaps you shouldn’t care too much about the critics. They are just opinions. I’m sure plenty of people have loved your work.” She tries to cheer Luc up, knowing as well as he does, that his paintings had barely sold on the opening-night.

With trembling fingers Michelle grabs a pill from the bottle of tranquillizers. Though she knows that she shouldn’t take them with alcohol, she swallows the pill away with some cheap vodka she bought. She’s tired and just wants to sleep. If she wants to get her baby back, she must have a clear head…
She lies down, lets her arm cover her eyes. Oh, to just close her eyes and forget, just sleep, it sounds like a dream come true… but she can’t sleep. She hears Daniel cry in her head and she’s sure he’s calling out to her. He needs her. He needs his mommy so much….
Her eye-lids start to feel heavy. In her mind there’s Daniel. And there’s Scotty. Scotty… God, how long had they known each other….? They had been around eight, nine years old when they first met. Inseparable at first. Scotty didn’t have many friends, he was way too shy to really make contact.
Making contact had never been a problem for Michelle and her big mouth. They had been a strange pair, but it had worked somehow. At first they had lived on the same street, but her father got another job and move to a bigger house, a few streets away from Scotty’s house. It didn’t matter, they both had bikes and they always found each other.
Things changed when they were around fifteen. Michelle started to get feelings for Scotty, but Scotty didn't notice. He had been completely oblivious to them. And with reason/ When he finally confessed that he believed that he was gay, she didn’t believe him. She didn’t want to believe him… The biggest mistake she made in 1996.
“Scotty, how can you be SURE? I mean, have you ever tried it? With a girl?” she asks. Scotty shakes his head, he looks at the palms of his hands. “Then nothing is sure.”
“Michelle….”
“Scotty, you’re so shy and scared of everything. Maybe you just feel easier around other men, because you’re a man too…. And if you have all these weird ideas in your head about being gay….. ”
“They are not weird ideas… I believe I am.” Scotty replies, but Michelle waves it away.
“Listen, I have tons of experience with guys like you. Shy, afraid to screw up with a girl, for guys like you, girls like me come from a different planet…. All you have to do is just have sex with a girl and then you’ll see how easy it is and you’ll be over it.”
“Just have sex with a girl? Problem solved?” There’s a little underlying sarcasm.
“It’s not higher math, you know. And I know just the girl for you.” She laughs.
“Who’s the victim? And how drunk do I have to make her?”
“No, stupid, I’m talking about myself. I’m not letting you lose your virginity with someone else. And I don’t have to be drunk….
You might need to be though. Just so you relax a bit. Come on, what do you care? Hey, you don’t even have to be worried about getting sick. Those antibiotics work splendidly, so you won’t get the flu from me.”
Scotty had believed her, he had reluctantly agreed, repeating several times, that he doesn’t want her to get hurt, but Michelle had been convinced that she was right.
After a few more drinks and silly talk, they both agree they are relaxed enough. Scotty closes his eyes tightly, when she kisses him, she plays with him, teases him, slowly gets him aroused. Scotty lets it all happen. He puts himself in her hands and she can’t believe they are finally in each other’s arms.
She doesn’t even think of using protection, she’s on the pill, she doesn’t need it. Not that she could think about it, when Scotty finally enters her. She moves against him. He holds her tight, he does everything right, Michelle can’t complain about how careful he is with her and then... it’s over.
She hadn’t expected him to come so fast, but she doesn’t care. This was just the first time. Now that he has had the taste of it, he’ll want more….
Except, of course, he didn’t. Scotty had been very upset the next day.
“Michelle, we should not have done that. It didn’t solve anything. It only made things messier in my head.” His eyes fill with tears. “I don’t know what I want…. I don’t want us to see each other a few days. I need to clear my head….”
He had turned away from her. He had just walked away from her, like nothing had happened.…
Michelle turns over on the bed and puts her hand on her belly, that belly were once….
And then she had missed her period… And she didn’t understand what was going on, so she made a doctor’s appointment.
“Young lady, I told clearly you to read the prescriptions. It says here in the description of the antibiotics that they render useless most anti-conception pills and that you should either abstain from sexual intercourse or use another form of protection…”
Yes. It had been written there. Black on white. She should have used something else. Fuck! Or rather, that was what she shouldn't have done. She could not believe that the pregnancy-test had turned out positive. There was no way this could happen to her. She ran to her mother, not knowing what to do.
Another mistake… Two mistakes actually. Because if her mom had been upset and concerned, her father, once he had heard about her pregnancy from her mother, had used a completely different language.
“Pregnant? By that queer boy? …. Oh, don’t look at me like that, he clearly is. Why the hell did you think I let you stay with him? Because I thought that would be ‘safe’!” He spits out his words, venom in every one of them and Michelle realizes that her father is going to make trouble for Scotty. If he goes to Wally and Bertha….
“He didn’t really want it. I got him drunk…” Michelle cries, knowing it wasn’t the exact truth. “I thought I could make him change his mind…”
“Does he know?”
“No.” She sobs.
“Good. That will make everything easier…”
She hadn’t understood what he meant, but the next day he called her school and told them she was sick. They drove off to a hospital on the other side of town, where ‘no one know what shame you’ve brought on yourself’ and then.. there was no more child to worry about.
She had gone back to school, empty and disillusioned. Her parents had acted as if nothing had happened and she had gone along with it. But of course everything had changed. Scotty had stayed away from her, feeling clearly uncomfortable around her and she had not mind it very much.
She could not push for a rekindling of the friendship, when she found it hard to look Scotty straight in the eyes and not tell him what had happened, so Scotty’s behavior was a blessing to her. She never had to tell Scotty the truth. It wouldn’t have served any purpose anyway.
It would only be years later, when they met up again, and when time had healed some of the wounds and had made events in their lives less dramatic, and when she could finally accept Scotty’s sexual orientation, that they could go back to the closeness they once had.
