Downstairs, Mateo grabs Helen carefully by the arm to take her to the hallway, where the music is less loud.
“I have a phonecall..." He explains. "Paige?” He looks at his phone. She’s calling him, but there’s no sound on the other side until he hears a little thud of a phone falling. “Paige?” He asks again.
Helen leans in closer to listen along with Mateo, when both she and Mateo hear “Come on, let’s undress her, make sure the door is closed, we don’t want unexpected visitors.” Helen looks up at Mateo.
“Paige is in trouble.” She speaks the words that are on Mateo’s mind.
“Upstairs!” They rush up the stairs to find several rooms there.
“Which one is Bradley’s?” Helen asks.
“I don’t know. Never been here before in my life.” Mateo answers. Helen doesn’t waste time.
She takes one of the candlestick as a weapon and throws open the first door she sees. It’s the bathroom. Mateo is momentarily surprised by how feisty she is, but then he rushes over to the next door. An empty bedroom. They both suddenly hear a noise behind a door and, as if on silent agreement, Helen opens the door, but Mateo is the one who goes into the room.
Paige is on the bed, her dress pulled up far over her tighs and the four boys look at Mateo and Helen, shocked by the sudden appearance of them.
“What the hell is going on?” Helen says and she immediately runs over to Paige, shoves her dress down and grabs her by her chin.
“Paige? Paige?” She shakes Paige up, but Paige doesn’t respond. She slaps Paige’s cheek. Paige tries to open her eyes, but it’s nothing but a fluttering of her eye-lashes.
“Helen, Paige is a diabetic….” Mateo tells.
“This is not right! Call 911! Right now!”
“Oh, come on!” Bradley protests, feeling that she overreacting.
“I can hardly feel a heart-beat.” Helen tells Mateo. She can hear Mateo give the address to the operator. “Tell them to hurry!....” She yells at Mateo, before she turns to Bradley. “What did you put in her drink?”
“I don’t know….” Bradley starts, but Helen grabs the candlestick, jumps up and shoves Bradley against the wall with one very hard push and she shoves the stick under his nose. “I lost a dear friend to an overdose of drugs last year. I’m not going to let another person die. What did you give her?”
Bradley shakes his head, unable to answer. She raises the candlestick.
“Tell me! If you don’t want to lose all your teeth, you better start talking now. She’s dying!” Mateo is shocked at Helen’s words. It’s something he can’t even imagine.
“I don’t know. A friend gave me something. Something he concocted himself.” Bradley wines.
“You complete moron! You throw something in the drink of a diabetic girl, without even knowing what it is and what it will do to her?!”
“It was supposed to knock her out for a while…”
“What for?” Mateo asks, still not able to accept what it is he walked in on.
“Rape.” Helen says without any attempt to soften the blow. “Paige is out, they do with her what they want. Perhaps take a couple of pictures to spread around on school and humiliate her even more, … just for fun, of course. And they can pretend they are so fucking cool, when all they are is just a bunch of cowards!”
Mateo becomes enraged at the thought that anyone would want to hurt Paige.
“I’m going to kill you!” He yells and tries to get to Bradley, but Helen stops him.
“NO! Wait! This is not the time! The ambulance is here. Go downstairs and get them up here. Save Paige!” She orders and she shoves him towards the door.
“You better hope that nothing is wrong with Paige. I don’t think her family is going to take it too well, when they find out what you’ve done.” Helen warns Bradley, who positively looks terrified. Mateo is halfway the stairs when the door gets opened to let in the paramedics and he can see the police arriving at the scene as well.
“Justin! Dan!...” Mateo says with relief, when he sees who the paramedics are. “It’s Paige,.. they gave her some drug.” Mateo says and Justin stops suddenly. Dan can see that Justin is shocked that the medical emergency is for his niece.
“Let’s not waste time then.” Dan says, giving Justin a shove. It takes Justin out of his shock.
“Take us to her.” He orders Mateo, who leads them to Bradley’s room. Justin immediately rushes to Paige.
“Paige! P, can you hear me? Try to let me know…” Justin asks. A fluttering of eye-lashes is all Paige can do. “Dan, we need to get her to the hospital. Fast!”
Helen backs away and walks into Mateo, who’s standing behind her. She turns around and he can see fear on her face.
“It’s going to be alright now…. Justin is her uncle and he know a few things about drugs too… He and Dan will save her…” Helen rubs his upper-arms, realizing that he’s mostly trying to convince himself.
“She’ll be fine. She has to. I don’t want her to die.” Mateo’s eyes fill with tears.
“I’m sure that they’re doing the best they can.”
“She’s not responding….”
“The effect most likely hasn’t worn off yet.”
“Did you really lose a friend to drugs..?”
“Last year. One pill didn’t have the effect she wanted, so she took a second one. She died in my arms…”
“I’m sorry.”
“Me too.” Helen sighs. She follows Mateo, when he goes after Justin and Dan, who bring Paige to the ambulance. Seeing Mateo standing there, a little lost, Justin tells him: ‘
“Get in. You’re coming to the hospital too.”
“I came here with Helen.” Mateo says helplessly.
“Get in, at the front.” Justin tells Helen. “Buckle up though. He drives like an idiot.” Helen gets in the ambulance next to Dan and the last thing she sees is Mateo’s terrified face and the determined look on Justin’s.

Joe runs around the corner and nearly runs into Justin.
“How is she?”
“They are emptying her stomach.”
“Will she be alright?”
“I don’t know. She was stable when I left her in that room at the ER, but I’m not a doctor.”
“Is it true that this Bradley had something to do with this?”
“Not sure. We’ll know more when Paige comes to, we hope.”
“If that little punk did something….”
“You’ll have to get ticket to hurt him and stand in line behind Kevin, Scotty and Tommy. Mateo and Helen are first though.” Justin answers dryly and Joe turns to him, wondering how Justin can be joking right now, but then he sees the concern on his ex-brother-in-law’s face.
“Justin! She had regained consciousness!” Mateo yells at Justin, before seeing that he’s with Joe. “Oh, hi, Joe.” Mateo says rather shyly.
“I want to see her.”
“Ahm, Joe, have you talked to Sarah already?” Justin asks. Joe, Justin and Mateo walk up to the door where Tommy awaits them as well.
“No. I first wanted to find out what was going on with Paige.”
“Shall I call her?” Tommy asks, now that Joe has joined him.
“No. I’ll call her later on.” Joe says and he goes into the room where Paige is.
Paige turns her head when Joe enters.
“Dad?”
“I’m here, honey.”
“Bradley… He wanted… He wanted to …. I’m sorry…” She cries.
Joe takes her in his arms and holds her. He kisses her hair and gently puts her back on the bed to then caress her face.
“My sweat P., you don’t own anybody any apology whatsoever. It’s very likely that you got drugged, which means that you weren’t responsible for anything in the first place.
I’m just glad that Mateo got to you as fast as he did and that Justin and Dan are such good paramedics and that the hospital could help you so fast….” He wipes away her tears, before wiping away his own tears. “You can’t begin to know how scared I got when I got Mateo’s call…”
“Did they… do… something to me?” She asks. “I can’t remember…”
“No. They got there just in time… To stop them.”
“Mateo?”
“Yes…”
“Is he here? Can I talk to him?”
“If you want.”
“Are you going to tell mom? She’s going to be so mad at me..” Paige looks up at Joe, afraid of what her mother will think of her.
“She has no right to be mad at you. She did everything she could to put you and that bastard together. So, she’s about the last person who’s permitted to say something to or about you, sweetie. You would have been much better off if she would have stayed out things and left you with Mateo.”
Realizing that he’s not being all too nice about Sarah, he quickly corrects:
“I’m sorry, baby, don’t know what I’m talking about, I’m just …. I’ve had quite a scare tonight… I’ll talk to your mom…”
“Can I talk to Mateo? Is he here?”
“Yes, he is. I’ll ask him.” Joe straightens Paige’s sheet. “I love you and we’ll talk in the morning. Alright?”
“Dad? Are you angry? Are disappointed with me?”
“No. honey. This is not your fault and the only one I’m angry at, is this punk Bradley.”
Joe gets up from the bed, kisses Paige’s forehead and walks over the door.
“I’ll see if Mateo’s willing to talk to you.” Joe says. Paige nods. Outside Joe sees Mateo sitting a chair. Helen is by his side.
“How is she?” He asks, clearly shook up.
“She wants to talk to you.” Joe says with a smile. “You can see her, just a few minutes.”
Mateo nods and quickly goes to the room. He knocks before opening the door.
“Hi.” Paige says quietly. “I’m sorry…”
“For what?”
“For ruining your night. And with Helen. And such.” She looks guilty. “It is true? Did he really try to drug me? Did he really plan to hurt me?”
“I think so, yes. If you hadn’t called me….” Mateo doesn’t even want to think of the consequences.
“If you hadn’t answered me…” Paige realizes. “I’m so sorry. For everything. Especially about breaking up with you. I was so stupid. He never even loved me… And I didn’t realize how much I wanted you until I saw that you got interested in Helen and I suddenly knew that you weren’t going to wait for me, as I had stupidly thought.”
Mateo holds her hands, his mind tries to figure out what she’s saying to him.
“What do you mean?”
“I want you back… I’m still in love with you…” Paige says softly. Mateo opens his mouth, but then decides not to say anything.
“Do you think we can?... Get back? To us?” Paige now asks.
“I don’t know. I need to think it over.” Mateo answers.
“Because you’ve fallen for Helen?”
“No. Helen is cool. And … I’m still in love with you, but…”
“But what?”
“Maybe you should first deal with what has happened to you. And deal with breaking up with Bradley and get him out of your system…. It really hurt when you dumped me and I’m not ready to go through all of that again… and again….”
Paige nods that it makes sense to her and Mateo gives her a quick kiss on her head.
“I have to go.” He says, but Paige grabs his arm.
“But you’re not in love with Helen?”
“No.” Mateo answers resolutely and he places another kiss on her hair.

Tyler rings at the door of the Lockhart house, her arm casually around Helen’s shoulder. A man opens the door. He has an inquisitive look on his face.
“Yes? … Helen! Where have you been? We were worried….”
“Dad…” Helen starts.
“Mr Lockhart? I’m sorry, my name is Tyler Altamirano. I’ve brought you daughter back home and I’m aware that it’s past her curfew and that she should have been home an hour ago…”
“You could have called.” Clark Lockhart tells Helen.
“She knows. She wanted to, but we thought it better if we would explain it in person. Helen was a party tonight, where another girl, my niece, got drugged…. Your daughter quickly understood what was going on and took action. She handled it very well and quickly alerted 911. And she stayed by my niece’s side, all the way to the hospital.
My niece is alright now, thanks to your daughter, but due to the circumstances, with all our attention on Paige, we sort of forgot about Helen and we’re very sorry…. We just wanted you to know that it’s not Helen’s fault…” Helen stares to the ground, a bit embarrassed by Tyler’s kind words.
“Well, that’s quite a story. I’m just proud that you could save another girl’s life tonight.” Clark says to Helen, before turning to Tyler. “Do you want to come in?”
“Ahm, no… I have to go back to the hospital…” Tyler refuses kindly. “Just wanted to make sure that this girl wouldn’t get in trouble at home.”
“Don’t worry about that.” Clark answers with a smile. Tyler says goodbye and he closes the door behind her.
“Wow, that’s quite a story. I’m sure that mom and I want to know every detail…”
“I heard what she said.” Clarissa Lockhart now joins her husband and daughter.
“It was nothing..” Helen says modestly. “I couldn’t have done it without Mateo.”
“You’re quite interested in that boy, aren’t you?” Clarissa smiles. Helen grins.
“Wipe that grin off your face, mom, Mateo is nice, good looking and charming,… He’s also completely in love with that girl who got drugged tonight. So, no worries.”
“Oh, honey… It’s just that I’ve never seen like this before. You’re usually more reserved, but this boy… He really made an impression?” Clark says.
“I know. It is so weird. I felt an immediate connection to him. He looked at me and it was like I had known him all my life.
Maybe it’s because Sophia McCallister was so kind about Mateo and Paige… I just felt that I would like them straightaway and I do. Paige is nice too, … when she’s not foolishly jealous of me.” Helen ads.
“How were they connected to Sophia McCallister again?” Clarissa suddenly want to know.
“Something with her stepmother…. I don’t really remember how it works, but she knew them and….”
“I know I said ‘yes’ to this party based on what you told me about Sophia, but … maybe we should be more careful with who you’re going out with.”
Helen frowns. She has always been rather independent and this annoys her.
“Mateo is a nice guy. And Paige just picked the wrong boyfriend. I’m sure that once she and Mateo get back together, it will all be good.”
“And what about your feelings for that boy?” Clarissa wonders.
“There a no romantic feelings there, mom. Trust me. I will not get involved with Mateo Paresa!” Helen laughs it off and checks the fridge for something to drink. She doesn’t notice the peculiar look her parents share behind her back.
“Paresa…” Clark whispers.
