CHAPTER SIX: JULIA : STARTING A FAMILY.
The first wave of nausea had passed and as weird as it had felt, she’s reaching out above her to take the pregnancy test out of the medicine-box. She follows the instructions and waits for the results, pondering over whether or not she wants a positive result. She wants a child, a baby. Her own, not someone else’s.
She knows that it shouldn’t make a difference and she believes that she could love an adopted child just as much, but… she wants to be pregnant. But she wanted the child to be Tommy’s…. She supposes that she should be grateful that the child will at least be a Walker, but it bothers her that a child would be either Justin’s or Kevin’s.
It bothers her not to know, as if she somehow slept around and has no clue who had made her pregnant. She understands Tommy’s pain and insecurity and she went along with him, agreed to use both Justin and Kevin’s sperm, but still…. She picks up the test and looks at it. With one eye only. Afraid for another negative result. But the pink dot staring back at her is very firm.
*******************************
She basks Elizabeth in her arms and she sings a little song her child. Her only child. Because her son is dead. Her eyes fill with tears. She has her child. She has her beautiful daughter. But she misses her son.. She caresses Elizabeth’s cheek, knowing that she should be happy that this strong girl is here to caress… and not in some cold grave like her brother.
She hears Tommy downstairs, but she can also hear someone come upstairs.
“Hey. How are you?” Kevin smiles at her, looking a bit sheepish. She smiles up at him from her rocking-chair.
“I’m fine. I’m just grateful for Elizabeth.”
Her eyes meet Kevin’s. How come she had never noticed how blue they are? She blinks away the thought that she knows those eyes too well. She smiles shakily at the thought that had crept into her mind.
“Do you want to hold her?” She asks.
“Can I? She’s so small.” Kevin answers. She carefully puts her child in Kevin’s arms, a bit surprised by how emotional she suddenly gets. “Are you okay?” Kevin asks, obviously concerned that he had done something wrong.
“I’m fine.” But her smile is completely fake.

She can see the pain around her. Tommy’s tears. Scotty’s worries. Nora’s hand-wringing. Kitty’s confusion. Sarah’s support. She can even see how Justin and Rebecca are dealing with the fact that Elizabeth is not Justin’s.
“It’s Kevin.” It had been all Tommy had said to her.
She enters the room where Kevin is recovering from the surgery. Contrary to Elizabeth he hasn’t regained consciousness yet. The doctors let him sleep a little longer to give his body more time to recuperate, Justin had explained. But it's time for him to come out of the anaesthesia. Now that Elizabeth seems to do fine, Julia feels like she can start to care about those around her again as well.
Scotty is talking to the doctor and that gives her a few seconds alone with Kevin. She brushes away the hair on his forehead and he opens his eyes. She smiles at him.
“Thank you. For everything.” She whispers and she places a kiss on his forehead. Kevin smiles, closes his eyes and goes back to sleep.
