CHAPTER ONE

“I really don’t know any other way to tell you this, Chad. I’m so sorry, but … Damn, I don’t want this. We could always rely on you and I feel like I’m letting you down, but the higher-ups want to ‘rejuvenate’ the show…. And … I’m so sorry. They feel that Doctor Philips should go… To be replaced by some younger actor…”

As the man continues to pour his heart and soul into the seven millionth excuse and the six millionth emphasize that it’s not his idea, Chad can only stare at him blankly. Doctor Philip will leave “Tempest Bay”? Permanently? He has had this job for he doesn’t know how many years!

His character’s importance had varied over the years, his part had been played down a few times to give Chad the opportunity to play in a movie or another show. Then Dr Philip would be kidnapped, lost at sea and presumed dead or just on a honeymoon with one of the 7 women he had married on the show.

But it had always been his ‘home’ to return to. And now he was going to lose that…? He can’t get his head around it.
“I know it wasn’t your fault…” He hears himself say the words. A smile is plastered on his face, but it doesn’t reach his eyes or his heart.

Chad throws his keys on the bar and goes straight to Jason’s study, knowing that his husband will most likely be there.
“You won’t believe what happened to me today…” Chad starts, but then he sees Jason’s face. It is all swollen and his eyes are red.

“Jase, what happened?” He asks, immediately worried. “Is it Kitty? Has the cancer returned?” It’s the first thing that comes to his mind, because he knows that Kitty had an appointment this week and it had given Jason and him the opportunity to look after Evan. Jason shakes his head.

“No. I don’t know the results from Kitty’s test yet… It’s the kid that was at our door last night…? Michael?.... He had so many troubles at home and he … he wanted to end his life… I talked to him for I don’t know how long… when he left last night.. I thought I had talked him out of it… But now I heard that his father just found him… Goodbye note and all.”

Chad immediately forgets his own drama. He walks up to Jason and puts his arms around him. He holds Jason, who sobs against his shoulder. Chad sighs. It is nice that Jason had another congregation, but it doesn’t mean that Chad finds it easy to deal with the problems that come with it.

“… But still… Mice? In my kitchen? Never. I can’t believe it. I can’t get my head around it. We keep everything clean, there are not foods left unattended. We keep as much as we can in cans or plastic boxes. It makes no sense that I should have mice.” Scotty says for what seems the 90th time in this last half hour that Kevin is home.

“I’m even more surprised that both mice were dead. And how convenient it was that they were found by two health-inspectors…” Kevin says. Scotty looks at him. Kevin had put into words what was on Scotty’s mind.
“I’ve been forced to close the restaurant for 2 weeks… This is awful…” Scotty shakes his head.

Kevin knows that it’s more invasive than this. Food should be destroyed while the restaurant would be closed. And there would have to be exterminators who would need to come in and rid the place of any mice they might have… No income, but a lot of damages. And wages to pay… Scotty would take a big financial hit.

Kevin doesn’t even dare to think of what this would do to the reputation of Café 429. The place is Scotty’s pride and joy. Scotty had always stuck to every rule and regulation. It’s too stupid for words that Scotty, of all people, would have had mice and not recognize it. Kevin sighs. He’s at a loss of words to comfort Scotty.

“I’m sorry.” Scotty suddenly says. “How was your day?” He’s suddenly aware that he hadn’t shown much interest in Kevin’s life lately. Kevin, too, seems surprised by Scotty’s question. Kevin would like to give Scotty some good news, but he can’t.
“I lost three of the four cases today. The forth one is still pending the judge’s decision.”

Knowing that Kevin can take losses very personal, Scotty’s heart breaks.
“I’m so sorry about that.” He says, not sure what else he can say. Kevin shrugs.
“It sucks. Especially for that one kid who now has to go to juvie, even though he shouldn’t be there. He needs a different kind of care, not punishment.”

Scotty gets up from the kitchen-table to grab the pot of coffee and pour himself and Kevin some more. But not even the hot coffee can take away the sadness that he feels. Or this feeling that this is about the worst day of his life. And right now he can’t even rely on Kevin, because Kevin is in a bad place of his own, where Scotty can’t give him comfort either.
