CHAPTER SIX
*****
“Scotty? Could you do me a favor?” Jason asks.
“Sure.” Scotty answers immediately.
“I know you hired a car to get here. Can you please go the set where Chad works? Apparently he left some of his belongings there, amongst which a gold necklace and bracelet…
I would love to go there myself, but right now, I can’t handle it. It would be too definitive. Like I’m giving up… Like getting his belongings because he won’t be coming back. But the director is afraid that Chad’s belongings might get stolen… It would be better if we could just pick them up and put them in a safe place. I get his point, but…”
“Of course, I can go.. No problem. Just go search for Chad… I’m sure you’ll find him soon enough. I don’t believe he has left you. He’s still here.” Scotty’s words are soft, but they reach Jason in the right way.
“I know… I feel the same… If he’d no longer be with us, I’d know.” He nods.

“We haven’t heard anything about him… There are several search-parties searching for him. But the area is very big and we have no idea in which direction he went to begin with. Or if he went by his own choice…” The sheriff’s face is deadly serious.
“What do we do now?” Jason asks.
“Maybe - thought I’d rather not do it just yet - but maybe it will be our only chance… That would be to seek the media about this. Perhaps someone has given him a ride, or he got hurt, or he can’t remember who he is. Weird things happen and I think that broadening the search-area might help…” The sheriff scratches the back of his head.
“It could also make things more difficult.” Kevin points out. “Every prankster and his grandmother could start calling with false information…”
“True. I’m open for other suggestions though…” The sheriff looks at them, but Kevin and Jason don’t have an answer either.

“My name is Scotty Wandell. I’m here to…” Before Scotty can finish his sentence the woman opposite of him says:
“Oh, please, please, tell me you from the catering. Because if you’re not I’ll go insane any minute now. Everyone has been nagging at my head that there’s no coffee and that they have to get things themselves, rather than getting everything handed on a silver platter…”
She takes a deep breath and then sighs: “I’m sorry. How can I help you?” She wipes a lock of hair from her forehead and Scotty takes pity on her.
“I can help you with the catering, if you’re that desperate. But only until suitable replacement will be here... I’m actually here to see the director. Dane Kane?”
“He’s not here right now. Got called to the police-station about something. He’ll be here in about two hours. Nice joke about the catering though.”
“No joke. I used to be a waiter. So I can help you out until Mr Kane gets here. Show me where everything is?” The assistant seems to appreciate Scotty’s calming appearance and just a few seconds with him in the small kitchen convinces her that Scotty knows what he’s doing.
Scotty is rather surprised by his own audacity. Yet, for some reason, he thinks that this will give him some idea of what is going on the set. He had actually expected people to be more concerned about Chad’s disappearance. However, it seems like all is business as usual. He hears laughter and banter, which feels weird compared to the pain and anguish that Jason is going through.
Here, no one seems to care that Chad is gone. But as he brings coffee and tea around and he listens in on conversations, he realizes that no one knows that Chad is gone. And when he carefully suggests to the girl in make-up that he’s sad to see that Chad Barry is not here today - he had heard that Chad was working on this movie - he’s surprised to hear that Chad is supposedly in Los Angeles.
“.. though we think it’s a bit of a coincidence that Chad goes to LA and, at the same time, the woman who provides us with coffee and the lot disappears as well. It could raise an eyebrow or two.” She jokes. Her colleague, make up girl number 2, laughs out loud.
“He can’t be that desperate. If I were a man, I'd rather do it with a cactus. She’s a total cow.”
“Hey, don’t insult the cows. I’ve seen cows who look better than Shirl.”
“Shirl?” Scotty asks.
“Yeah, the monstrosity that would do the catering before you did…. She was a fat, ugly elephant.” Number 2 explains.
“Oh, come on….Shirley was not pretty, but ...” Make up girl number 1 now tries to soften her words somewhat, but make-up girl number 2 will not have it.
“Sorry, but it’s true. She could have at least washed her hair once a week rather than have that greasy head. Her clothes were too tight, showing way too much. Sometimes ‘tight’ is just not a good idea. And she was huge..” She holds her hands at about 40 centimeters on either side of her body. “And everything just waved along as she moved, it was awful to see. I'd get sea-sick.…” She shivers overly dramatic.
“She was madly in love with Chad though.” Number 1 smiles gently.
“Insane as a bat about him, you mean.” Number 2 gets back.
“Alright, she would be able to beg for his attention. On her knees if she had to…”
“Maybe she did get on her knees for him, and that the reason he had to go to LA.” Though number 2 adds a big fat wink to her words, indicating that she doesn’t believe a word she’s saying, Scotty gets a weird feeling inside.
“I got to say this. This tea, that you made, is perfect… You’re so much better than Shirl was. The only person she really paid attention to was Chad…. Very annoying…”
Scotty nods at number 1’s words, glad that he hadn’t lost his touch of making people at ease. With her words on his mind, he continues to bring the coffee and tea around. And he’s glad when he finally sees his replacement arrive and to hear the assistant say that Mr Kane is back and can receive Scotty in his office.

When Shirley enters the room to bring Chad some more food, she finds him awake and looking at her with a flabbergasted look on his face.
“Who are you?” He asks.
“What do you mean? I’m Shirley.” She answers.
“Do I know you? You … you look familiar… I just… I can’t place you.. Do we know each other?” He looks concerned.
“What is going on?”
“I don’t know… I just… I feel like I woke up… from some heavy sleep..”
Chad’s voice is soft and his breathing shallow. Shirley feels even more worried.
“I feel like I’ve been in a daze for a long time, like having been on drugs... like only now my head is starting to clear… Am I in a hospital?” His voice perks up a bit.
“N..no… Just with a friend…” Shirley answers slowly.
“Have I been sick?” Chad asks now. Shirley blinks. Chad seems genuine in his question.
“I’ve been keeping you here … away from everyone…”
“… Because I was sick? I’m here to heal?”
“Yes.”
“Did I have the flu or something?”
“No… you’re gay and …”
“No, I’m not.”
“You’re married to a man.”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Chad laughs, non-believe on his face. “Me? Married to a man? Don’t you think I’d remember that?” Chad sees something shift on her face. Too much. Too fast. He realizes that he should tone in down. Don’t over-act. Oh, how he wishes he had a script to work from. Improvisation was never his thing.
He turns his head away from her and he bites his lip to express his faked anxiety.
“I .. I have a headache… I …” He lets his voice trail off in an attempt to express how confused he is. Shirley frowns. Chad is acting strange, like he’s on some drugs or something.
“Are you alright, Chad? I … I just want to take care of you… If there’s something you need..?” She bites her lip in concern. He has her! She’s doubting… Don’t go too fast. Slowly now. Fill the time up with silence. It makes people insecure. Kevin had taught him that. Chad counts to ten in his head before he answers her.
“I don’t know… I’m so confused…. I could… I don’t know… Is there a window you can open or something? I feel like I could use some fresh air….” Chad sighs. Shirley looks around. The place is closed off everywhere. She wanted Chad to stay out of sight of everybody, though she could not lie to her brother about her guest.
She had been too excited about what she had done. She just had to tell someone and when her brother had dropped by last night, she had proudly showed her ‘conquest’ to him. He hadn’t reacted one way or another, just told her to be careful. And she is careful, but she’s also smart enough to know that Chad has nowhere to run.
The house is far away from the village and he’s practically naked. He can’t go anywhere, even if he would be untied… She shakes her head. If he needs fresh air, she could take him out on the porch.
“I’ll see what I can do.” She says, not noticing the flicker of hope in Chad’s eyes.
