CHAPTER EIGHT

“So, what will it be? Shall we inform the media or not?” Kevin asks Jason.
“I don’t know. Like you said, we’ll get a lot of false information and … maybe I should just trust the fact that Wallis knows his job…?” Jason however shakes his head as he speaks the words, his body clearly displaying that he doesn’t believe his own words.
“Why don’t I call Kitty? She knows more about how to handle the media…”
“If Kitty knows, we might as well tell TMZ, because it will be broadcast all over America in seconds…. She’s a Walker after all.” The watery smile on Jason’s face tells Kevin that it’s supposed to be a joke and he takes it as such.
“You know what I will do? I’ll call Kitty and tell her that I need her here and that I will inform her when she gets here. This will give us a bit of time. Maybe we will not need her after all. Maybe we will have found Chad in the meantime… But it will at least give the feeling that I’m doing something.”
Jason lets Kevin’s word sink in and he nods.
“Good idea… We’ll do it tomorrow-morning then… Call her… Tell her to get here asap.”
Jason seems closer to tears that to a smile and Kevin squeezes his shoulder.
“It’s going to be alright.” Kevin says, more to himself than to Jason.

Sweat forms on Chad’s forehead. Shirley is crazy enough to kill Scotty, if Scotty would know that Chad is here. How can he warn Scotty? How can he save Scotty? He tries to move his other hand, but he can’t.
“Don’t hurt him.” Chad quietly begs.
“You know him?” Shirley asks. Chad doesn’t know what to answer, his mouth is dry. He can’t tell her the truth, but does he dare to gamble with Scotty’s life by lying? He can feel her move closer to shotgun. The hair in the back of Chad’s neck stands up. Scotty has stopped the car and he gets out. He clearly recognizes Chad and Chad feels panic rise.
“That’s close enough!” Chad says loud and clear for Scotty to hear. “I want to be left alone!” He cannot completely conceal the fear in his voice. Scotty stops where he is, not sure what to say, surprised and happy to see Chad alive and well, but at the same time confused by the way he talks to Scotty.
“I know who you are. You’re that guy who interviewed me for that fan-magazine….” Chad says, while he prays that Shirley doesn’t recognize Scotty. There aren’t that many pictures of Chad with either Kevin or Scotty or both, but there are a few. Kevin and Scotty prefer to stay out of the limelight, unless it’s related to Café 429 or Kevin’s work.
But if Shirley has, for only one second, the idea that Chad is lying, it could end up bad for both of them. He can see Scotty blink and he prays for Scotty to play the game along and not get them killed. Scotty tries to read Chad’s face. It’s only a few seconds, but to both men it seems like an eternity before Scotty can find his voice again.
“That’s right…” Scotty answers hesitantly. He’s not quite sure why Chad is saying something this weird to him, but he can see that Chad is terrified. He takes one step closer and raises both hands where Chad and Shirley can see them. He does get the feeling that he’s on dangerous ground here.
“I was just on the set, where they told me that you had gone missing. Then they also spoke of Shirley… I assume that is you?” Scotty asks. Shirley nods. “Dane Kane gave me your address, saying that you had gotten real close to Mr Barry.” Scotty explains how he got here to take away any suspicion. “I don’t mean to inconvenience you…” He begins.
“But you are…” Chad replies. “I came here to be with this beautiful woman. I want peace and quiet….” Chad lets his only free hand caress Shirley’s hand, which rests on his shoulder. He’s barely able to suppress his horror at what he has to do. “This woman saved me. I was losing myself. I was on the wrong path…”
With Shirley standing behind Chad, only Scotty can see the total horror on Chad’s face. He’s close enough to see panic and fear in Chad and Scotty begins to realize that Chad’s fear is for Scotty and not so much for himself. Scotty isn’t sure where the threat comes from, but Chad is clearly letting him know he’s in danger.
“I can respect that… It’s just… your husband, Jason, is very concerned for you. He and his lawyer are looking for you…” Scotty’s voice is submissive and calm. A lot calmer than he feels. Chad closes his eyes. Jason and Kevin are here as well, looking for him. He’s not good enough an actor to hide his pain from Scotty.
Chad slowly opens his eyes again and he fixes his full attention on Scotty.
“I’m sorry. Please, let Jason know that I can no longer condone this life-style he had with me… I’ve seen the error of my ways…. This woman has been an angel, showing me that I had lost my way. Sh… She’s the love of my life….”
Scotty can see, by the way that Chad clenches his teeth, that Chad practically has to force the words out of his mouth. Chad focuses himself fully on Scotty. It is the way he has learned to work with Linda Collins. He can play his most difficult scenes with the actress, who plays the matriarch of the Cassidi-family, by focusing on her, shutting all other influences.
And now he has to play his scene as if it’s a page from the latest episode of Tempest Bay. With every bit of intensity and believability he can gather. And all he can hope and pray is that Scotty can improvise his part. And that Shirley can believe him… Shirley looks from Scotty to Chad.
Scotty had grown a thick skin during his time as a waiter. He takes Chad’s words as if Chad is troublesome customer. He breathes calmly. He has no idea what is going on, but he has to stay calm. He feels as if his life depends on it. He can see Shirley’s eyes become more narrow as she waits for the conversation to move on.
“In that case,…” Scotty clears his throat. “I can only wish you luck and happiness. I think you’ve made a wise decision.” He has plastered a fake smile on his face and he nods kindly at Shirley. “I suppose that you will want to keep this a secret for the moment?”
“Yes. Please, don’t tell Jason where I am. Just tell him that … he and I are through…”
Scotty nods slowly,
“I’m sorry to hear that, but if that is your wish… I will leave you two alone…” Scotty backs up slowly closer to the car. “I will inform the sheriff that he no longer has to look for you…” Scotty wants to let Chad know that he will inform the authorities.
“No! No!… Ahm… if the sheriff finds out where I am, he will come after my precious Shirley. People don’t understand what I’ve been through or how I’ve seen the light… They will judge her… And I can’t have that… I can’t be responsible for people coming after her… I’m not well yet.. I still have to .. be with her.. to heal…
I… I need her… in my life… now…. So please don’t tell anyone. Just let Jason know that he and I are through… And that there someone else… who’s more important to me than he is.” Scotty can see Chad’s eyes glisten and he understands that there are tears in Chad’s eyes.
How he wishes he could just go up to Chad and hold him. He looks so lonely and lost. And scared.
“Oh, .. forgot your name,… but I’m very happy with the interest you showed in season 8. It was a real treat to talk you. I hope the fans will love the interview as well.”
Scotty blinks. What?! He almost gives away his confusion, but then Chad kindly adds:
“I remember that you mentioned that season 8 had been your favorite season, because so many things happened, but… many fans didn’t like it, because I hardly had any lines at all.
But I learned a lot that year though, from just working with the people I worked with. And… silly as it may sound, season 8 was one of my favorite seasons… Did you see it?” He directs his question at Shirley. She shakes her head. She had only started watching from season 10 on.
“No. I could never watch the older episodes. It’s hard enough to get internet to work this far out and on our old computer…” She makes a throw-away motion with her hand and Chad nods that he understands her.
“I’ll show you the episodes, once we’re in Hollywood. I have them all.”
Chad manages to gallantly kiss her hand. He’s too relieved that she doesn’t realize the significance of his words.
“I will leave you two alone then…” Scotty nods a goodbye and, with difficulty, he turns his back to Chad and he walks back to his rental car.
“Oh, my God, she’s going to kill me. She’s going to shoot me in the back.” The words tumble through Scotty’s head like a broken record. But Shirley lets him get into his car. Scotty’s hand shake as he puts the keys in the ignition. He starts his car and then he shifts his gear. Scotty gives more nod at Chad and Shirley and then slowly drives away.
Watching Scotty move further away from him nearly drives Chad crazy. He wants to scream at Scotty to come back, but he has to hold his tongue in control. Shirley is too dangerous. He can just feel that. She’s disappearing more and more into her fantasy-world. A worlds where she is his partner and no one else.
“Did you mean that? You will take me to Hollywood? I’m the woman you love…?” Shirley asks. She smiles like a 14 year old girl. Her eyes light up when she repeats the words that Chad had used. From deep inside him, Chad brings up a smile. He nods slowly, making his smile even brighter as if he’s even more mesmerized by her.
“Yes, my angel. And you deserve better than this place… You deserve all the beauty in the world for being such a good person,…” Chad swoons and his smile freezes on his face in one of his best soap-close-up grimace, the one soap-actors hold for a few seconds to signal the cliffhanger of the scene…
