CHAPTER ELEVEN
*****
“Sheriff Wallis? Hi! So nice to meet you at last! I’m Kitty McCallister. I’m the sister-in-law of Jason McCallister. Chad Barry is my brother in law. I’ve been asked to speak to the media about Chad’s possible kidnapping and I wondered if you would be so kind as to tell me what has been done so far, so we can give the public valuable information.
I really want to this in close association with you. Jason is very pleased and happy with the work you’ve done so far. He’s so impressed with how dynamic your approach has been. You haven’t wasted valuable time and you’ve kept him and Kevin, who happens to be my brother, up to date.
I can honestly tell you that the McCallisters aren’t easily satisfied and neither is my brother, so to hear them speak so highly of you, makes me confident that we can make a good representation to the press together.” Kitty almost swoons and she swears she can see Sheriff Wallis grow a few inches.
“Well, ahm, ma’am, of course I want to give you all the help you need.” He answers, shyly scratching his head after hearing all of Kitty’s compliments.
“I’ll just switch off my phone. I’d be so annoyed to get calls when we’re talking. I want you to be the centre of my attention.” She smiles, dangling her phone in the air.
She quickly sends a message that only says “Go!” to Jason and Kevin, before she puts her phone in silent mode and puts it in her bag. Now she needs to keep the sheriff busy for about an hour, so Shirley can’t reach her brother when she might try. Kitty gives Sheriff Wallace her kindest smile and points him to the office where she wants to talk to him.

“Ready?” Kevin whispers. Justin nods, but Scotty doesn’t seem to be too sure. He doesn’t like violence and he’s afraid of might happen if Jason and Shirley would meet. But he has no time to worry about it. Early that morning, before sunrise, Kitty had dropped Kevin, Justin and Scotty off and they had moved closer to the house, using the darkness to cover their actions.
They found a safe place in the barn. All the animals are outside, so there’s no reason for Shirley to come here. And even if she would, there are enough places to hide. They can hear a car drive up. Justin carefully steps back into the shadows of the barn, so that he can look outside, without being seen by anyone standing outside.
“It’s Jason.” He nods. Scotty tightens his grip on his shotgun. He’s not afraid to use it. Like with Kitty, Jason, Kevin and Justin, his Republican father had taught him to hunt, to use a gun, to kill if necessary, so he knows what he’s doing, but he’s afraid of how high the emotions will go and what he will do if Kevin or one of the others would be in danger.
“It will be alright.” Justin says quietly as if he can guess what’s going in Scotty’s head. “I had a long talk with Jason. He won’t do anything foolish. We will most likely not have to used these shotguns.”
“I hope you’re right.” Scotty answers, still not entirely convinced.
“Me too.” Justin whispers under his breath. He looks at Kevin and he sees the calm confidence of a man who know what he’s doing. William had taught Kevin well, and Kevin was good enough to even have surprised Robert, so Justin isn’t too worried there. All his siblings are good shots.
Jason stops in front of the house and honks as annoyingly loud and often as Robert’s car can get. The door flings open and Shirley comes out.
“What the…?” She stops mid-sentence when she sees Jason standing there. She knows who he is and he looks rather imposing in real life.
“I want to talk to him. Now. If that rat wants to leave me, he’s going to have to tell that me straight to my face. I don’t give a damn who he wants to screw, but he’s going to tell it to me. In person. He wants a divorce? He can have it! But straight to my face! Right now. Right. Now. Eye to eye.”
Jason’s sounds perhaps more menacing because he doesn’t raise his voice, but he conveys his anger through a rigid pose and the way his fists clench and unclench.
“I’ll get him.” Shirley nods. “Wait here.” She goes back into the house and doesn’t notice the smirk on Jason’s face.
As if he would enter that house! The mere thought of being anywhere near that woman makes him sick. Oh, how he would love to just shoot her on sight. He's never been so angry in his life. But there's Chad to consider. They have to get him out of the house first.
Behind the house, Justin cuts the telephone line first. He hears voices inside. Shirley’s first and then Chad’s. He can hear his heart beat faster. A door opens somewhere inside and Justin hears the sound move away from him. He dares to look inside and looks at Shirley’s back. It takes him a few moments to realize that she’s pushing a wheel-chair. Is Chad hurt?
To Jason, it feels like it had been an eternity, but then the front-door opens again and a wheel-chair, with Chad sitting in it, gets pushed out. Jason holds his breath for a second. Is Chad hurt? Is that she made sure he couldn't escape?
Behind the house, Justin cuts the power-line as well. Shirley doesn’t know it yet, but nothing in her house works anymore.
“He stays here.” Shirley says loud and clear to Jason. Jason can see that under the blanket, that covers Chad’s legs, Chad tries to move his hand. It signals Jason that Chad can’t move his left hand. Only his right.
“Jason.” Chad’s voice is soft and Jason takes a few steps closer. “That’s close enough!” Chad yells. He has no idea what Shirley would do if she feels threatened.
“Well, I’m going to have to come closer to give you these.” Jason answers, he holds up a stack of paperwork.
“What is that?” Chad asks. He wonders what the hell is going on, what Jason is doing here and what game is being played.
“Divorce-papers. You want it? You got it. When I heard what you had said to that guy yesterday, I had Kevin draw up the papers right away. I’m done with this game! I’m sick and tired of being pushed and shoved around. I’m done with being lied at…!”
Jason’s voice gets increasingly louder as his anger at Chad seems to grow. Unaware that in the back of the house a door gets opened and that Justin goes through the house, while Scotty and Kevin each come closer by either sides of the house, Chad’s eyes widen. He doesn’t understand any of it.
He can’t believe that Jason would be stupid enough to believe that Chad would prefer Shirley over him, so why is Jason so mad at him? If this is a part he’s playing, what is going on? Jason can see the confusion on Chad’s face and momentarily he gets taken out of his part. Oh, how he would love to run up to Chad and hold him….
He closes his eyes tightly and when he opens them again, he’s back in character.
“It’s the standard thing. You keep your house in Beverly Hills, I keep the McCallister-ranch…” Jason drones on loud enough to keep the focus on him.
Chad blinks. He knows now that Jason is playing a part, because their house is technically not in Beverly Hills and the McCallister-ranch, though still in the McCallister-family, doesn’t belong to Jason. They know this, someone with less knowledge, like Shirley, would easily heap half Los Angeles under the "Hollywood" banner.
“You get to keep your money. I get to keep mine…” Jason moves closer. Shirley is too intrigued by what’s happening under her nose to notice that the door behinds slowly opens. The barrel of the gun is the first thing that Jason sees, then the rest of Justin. He’s right behind her.
“And as far as you’re concerned, Shirley Wallis-Cooper, I hope you will rot in hell or in prison, whichever one comes to you first.” Jason says with so much venom that even Chad is shocked by it.
“What?” Shirley opens her mouth to fling some insults at Jason’s head, but she’s silenced when she feels Justin’s gun in her back.
She tries to turn around, but before she’s half way, she’s already staring at the gun that Kevin is holding. She hears a noise behind her and then she sees Scotty, who kicks Shirley’s own shotgun away from behind the wheel-chair and far out of Shirley’s reach. Slowly Shirley raises her hands, aware that she’s in trouble.
Jason runs up to Chad and wraps his arms around his husband. Chad finally relaxes, now that he knows that freedom is close, and he sobs quietly against Jason’s shoulder.
“It will alright, babe, I’ll get you out of here.” Jason says. Shirley watches Chad’s reaction with disbelief.
“Get away from him! He was healing just fine. Get your filthy hands off of him! He’s mine! He's mine! You’ll make him all sick in his head again! You'll make him as sick as you are...” She screams at Jason. “You perverted little…” whatever else she had planned to say, she gets silenced when Jason’s fist hits her full in her face.
With all the strength and frustration of his anger, fear and concern of these last few days, all put into that punch, it hits her so hard that she’s immediately knocked out. Justin, Kevin and Scotty stare at Jason in complete shock. Jason swallows hard and wipes his face with his hands. Maybe even more surprised by his action than the others. Then he pulls himself together.
“My mom told me to never hit a woman, but … I’m sure she won’t mind if I make this exception.” Jason shakes all over with anger and Justin clears his throat.
“No, I don’t think she will.” His voice is calm and gentle. “Come on, we have to move quickly. And then tell Kitty to get the hell away from Sheriff Wallis.”
Jason tries to take away the blanket over Chad’s legs, but Chad grabs it firmly.
“Don’t. I… I’m not wearing anything underneath…” He tries to whisper, but his voice is louder than expected.
“I suppose that keeping him naked would diminish his chances of running away. He’s more vulnerable.” Justin explains, thinking that this is where Chad’s mortified looks comes from.
“I’ll search for his clothes. Get her in the car and let’s get out of here.” Scotty orders. Jason pulls up as close as he can and together with Kevin and Justin he hoists Shirley into the back of the car. They tie her up with the rope that was still in the car. Meanwhile, Scotty, on Chad’s instructions, found the room where Chad had been kept.
He brings back Chad’s clothes and the tape that Shirley had used to silence Chad. Jason has, in the meantime, untied Chad. And help him in his clothes, while the other men graciously pretend that they don’t know that Chad is naked in the wheel-chair. Finally Chad can get up and, with Jason’s help he manages to hobble to the car. Justin and Scotty take the front seat.
Jason lets Chad lie down on the back seat and Kevin and Jason stay in the back to keep an eye on the still knocked out Shirley. Kevin texts to Kitty that they’re done. Justin orders the GPS to give him the fastest way to the border. He exchanges looks with Kevin.
"Will you call Max Carter? Let him know that we've got Chad and his kidnapper? He would take care of the rest, once she's in his jurisdiction."
“I will. Let’s get out of here. Back to California. Fast!” Kevin suggests. Justin nods and starts the car.
