CHAPTER TWELVE
*****
Kitty is glad to leave the sheriff's office safe and sound. She had done her part, she had kept the man talking for nearly two hours, much longer than then the boys had needed. She had taken notes, made some kind of statement, repeatedly asked him to verify her words (she would never want to misquote him!) and she bascially kept his attention on her and her alone.
But now she's glad to be gone and make her own escape. She gets in the car that Scotty had hired to get from the airport to the hotel. She had checked out of the hotel earlier. The only thing she needs to do now is return the car that Scotty had rented, and she will take care of that on her way to the airport.
While driving, she constantly looks over her shoulder. She expects the sheriff to show up behind her at any second. He will then stop her and arrest her, but no one tries to arrest her. She lets out a sigh of relief when she arrives at the airport in time to bring back the car.
She's too early, so she takes the time to buy a gift for Evan. It calms her down. There is nothing more normal than a mother buying a gift for her child... No? Finally she checks in, which can be done quickly because she only has her handbag to deal with.
All she can do now is sit down and wait for the boarding call. The small tv-screens are showing the latest news from CNN, but nothing appears on Chad or Jason or anyone else she knows...
She breathes out slowly when she gets ready to get on board. She walks up to the plane, still suspecting the sheriff to stop her, but nothing happens. On board, she puts on her safety-belt. Another look over her shoulder. Has this Shirley been missed yet? Is her brother on his way?
The plane taxies into position and stops... Oh, God! Kitty holds her breath. In her imagination she can see how the doors open and how she will be dragged off this plane... The plane starts rolling again. Kitty slowly lets go of her breath. The plane gets off the ground..
It's done! She's on her way! She'll be back in California in no time! She texts Seth at what time he can pick her up at LAX. She tries to follow the news and she’s not surprised to suddenly read the ‘breaking news’ that finally hits. She listens to the news on her earplugs.
Actor Chad Barry had been kidnapped, but he had managed to escape and capture his kidnapper, with the help of his husband, Jason McCallister. They had then taken her across the border into California to hand her over to the police. Jason explains how he could not trust the police in Arizona because she was the sister of the local sheriff.
Kitty sees Max Carter arrest a big woman, who she assumes is Shirley. On top of that the news breaks that Sheriff Sam Wallis has also been arrested as an accomplice to the kidnapping of Mr Barry. He will most likely be sentenced in California as well. Good. Kitty gives the news a satisfied nod.
No one sees how Kevin, Scotty and Justin get in Nora’s car. They stay out of the news for now. Max shields them off from the press. Chad is surprisingly quiet. It is as if he doesn’t fully get what’s happening around him, but Kitty assumes he will be alright in a few days, once this entire ordeal is completely behind him.
She tries to read the magazine she had bought, but her eyes keep wandering to the screen to read the headlines. An official statement will be released by the police and by Chad’s management soon. By the time Kitty lands in Los Angeles she knows that her family, including Jason and Chad, is safe and sound. And that is all that matters to her.
*****
In the six weeks that had followed Chad’s ‘escape’, life had moved on for Scotty, Kevin, Kitty and Justin. Scotty’s restaurant gets a raving review from a food-critic and it seems to send even more people to his restaurant. Kevin wins a big, high-profiled case, so he’s news for a few days, drawing more customers.
Kitty is too busy helping Evan with a play in school. Evan has to learn his lines and Seth and Kitty have promised to help with the building of the set, something Kitty perhaps should not have promised, because they aren’t that good at helping at all. Justin manages to save a young girl’s life and it gives him his 15 minutes of fame.
Jason can only wish that his own life would get back to normal as well. Chad has dramatically changed since his kidnapping. The movie had been finished in LA, because Chad had no intention to go back to Arizona any time soon. And though Chad is now home every night, he might as well have been in Arizona.
Chad has pulled away from Jason both emotionally and physically. He’s quiet and withdrawn and Jason can’t reach him. Though they sleep together in the same bed, Chad pushes him away. Not hard, but clear enough that he’s not interested in being intimate with Jason.
And though Chad apologizes by saying that he’s just not over his kidnap yet, Jason can feel that there’s more going on, but no matter how gently he tries to get Chad to talk to him, Chad, with equal love and tenderness, pushes him away. It all leads to both men walking around on eggshells around each other.
Chad declines all requests for interviews. He prefers to be in his study and he prefers to be there alone. Jason just wishes that Chad could put it all behind him. They keep getting reminded of the case every day though, as more and more intimate details of Shirley’s and Sam’s lives come to the open.
The abuse they had been exposed to as children. The way their father had abused Shirley. The official miscarriage. The runaway husband. Then the police find the remains of several bodies behind the shed. One big skeleton and several small ones, some not even fully formed. The ‘missing’ husband has been found, the truth about the little baby-skeletons gets revealed and everyone speaks about ‘poor’ Shirley.
She moves from being an obsessive fan to a poor, abused and misinformed woman and slowly the voice for more compassion for this ‘poor woman’ grows louder. Chad shuts the voice out by hiding even further into his own little world. He knows very well that he can’t hide forever, but he can’t find the courage to talk to Jason either.
He can’t tell Jason what really happened those nights when Shirley came to his bed and used him. The mere memory sends shivers down his spine, makes him feel sick and dirty. He can’t forget the sounds she made and how it had felt to have her on top of him. Not to mention the smell of her…
He can see that Jason is suffering because of his silence, but he knows that if Jason would know the truth it would be even worse. Jason would hate him for sleeping with Shirley. He would never believe that Chad wouldn’t have been able to defend himself. He might even believe that Chad enjoyed it… Or worse… He might laugh at Chad for being so weak…
*****
The summon to come to the police-station surprises Chad somewhat, but he can’t very well refuse the order.
“I’m coming with you.” Jason decides on the spot.
“There’s no point. They will probably want to talk about this whole kidnapping again.”
“I want to be there with you.” Jason replies.
“I don’t need you there.”
“Yeah, you don’t need me for much these days, do you?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Exactly what I’m saying. We don’t talk, we don’t make love, we don’t laugh… we don’t live together anymore. It sometimes feels like you’d rather see me gone. I’m your husband! I’m a part of your life, like it or not! I want to know what the hell is going on!. And you’re not talking to me.”
“Because there’s nothing to talk about! And I’m done with answering the same old questions over and over again. Yes, I’m fine. No, I’m fine. I can handle it. I’m not dead, so I can’t complain about anything. I just want to put freaking behind me. Just get it over with. Just lock that bitch and her brother up and throw away the fucking key! That is all I want.
I don’t want to over-analyze, re-think or re-evaluate what happened to me! I just want to forget that it happened! I’m done dissecting it. I just want it dealt with!...” Chad yells frustrated and then, upon seeing the pain on Jason’s face he says, more softly. “You want to save my soul, and that’s sweet, but there’s nothing to save.
I love you and I do need you… And if you want to come.. Fine. Be my guest, but… do me a favor. When it’s done, don’t talk about it anymore. Don’t try to get me to ‘open up’. I’ve said everything I needed to say… I’ve been prodded and poked enough on this subject. Please… I’m tired of it all. And I’m tired of seeing her ugly face everywhere I go…”
“Fine. I won’t say another word… But I want to come with you.” Jason decides.
“Okay… Fine. Come with me.” Chad’s voice is softer and he caresses Jason’s arm. For a moment Jason thinks that Chad will take him in his arms and kiss him, but it doesn’t happen. Instead, Chad turns away and leaves Jason standing there.
*****
“I’m glad you could come here, Chad.” Max points to the two chairs for Jason and Chad to sit on. “I have a … difficult thing to discuss with you… And the only reason why is because I fear that this might soon hit the gossip-press as well. And I want you to be prepared for what might come.”
“What’s going on?” Chad asks, understanding that this isn’t the usual discussion, where they would have to see if Chad could add something to his story. Max looks from Chad to Jason and then asks:
"Perhaps we should have this conversation in private...?"
"We have no secrets for each other." Chad answers calmly. Max wonders if that is true, but he shrugs nonetheless.
“Shirley claims that she’s pregnant. The prison-doctor has confirmed that she’s a few weeks pregnant. And, according to Shirley, that baby is yours.”
Chad can feel all the blood drain from his face. He closes his eyes. He remembers the smell of sweat. The suction around his cock. He couldn’t stop her…
“Chad? Tell Max that this is nonsense. That you never slept with her. That it’s all in her mind.” Jason tells Chad.
Chad opens his eyes, he’s back in Max’s office and Shirley is nowhere near. He shivers. He opens his mouth to say something, but, for the life of him, he can’t deny that Shirley’s allegation could be true.
“Chad?” Jason’s voice has turned into a whisper.
“If that child is mine… I want to do what I can to protect that child…” Chad answers stiffly.
“So, you’re not denying that it’s yours?” Max is clearly surprised.
“It..” Chad hesitates and closes his eyes as if he wants it to be gone when he opens them again. “I think it might be mine…” He practically has to squeeze the words out of his mouth. Jason is too much in shock to react and he can therefore not see what Max sees. The mortification in Chad’s eyes tells him that there’s more to this one sentence than meets the eyes.
“We can’t do a test until later in the pregnancy… If you want to be sure…?”
“Yes. I do. If the child is mine, I will take care of it….” And what if it isn’t? Leave him or her with that nutcase? Chad’s mind can’t handle the answer to that question either.
Max can see that Chad's mind is no longer on this case and neither is Jason's... Guess there were some secretst still hanging between them after all, judging by Jason's reaction. He makes some notes and then he moves to say his goodbyes to Chad and Jason. They quietly leave Max's room.
They walk together to the elevator in total silence, the ride down feels nearly hostile. When they reach their floor, where their car is parked, Jason explodes.
“You slept with her?!?!?!?!”
“It’s not what you think…” Chad tries.
“All these weeks you kept quiet, you made me feel like I was doing everything wrong, that I somehow couldn’t connect with you… And now….? You slept with her?!”
“Jason….” Chad begs.
“You slept with her. I can't believe it...... Go to hell, Chad. I don’t want to hear any more lies…” And Jason walks back to the elevator and he's gone before Chad can react.
