CHAPTER THIRTEEN
*****
It’s nearly seven o’clock at night when Chad arrives at the backdoor of Café 429. He can’t think of anywhere else to go. He can’t go home for fear of seeing Jason. Or is he perhaps more afraid that Jason will not be there? He hopes that, through the back-door, he can avoid being seen by the guests of the restaurant.
For a moment he feels lost when he sees everyone busy with the preparation of the food. He can see Scotty at work. Concentrated and sharp, Scotty checks the dishes before they leave the kitchen. He makes quick adjustments to the way the food is displayed, sends a waiter away and then he quietly points out that the oven is ready. Suddenly Chad has eye-contact with Scotty.
Scotty sees Chad standing in the doorway. He looks lost and exhausted, his usual bright smile is nowhere to be seen. Even his eyes seem dull.
“Angie, take over!” He orders and he pushes Chad towards his office in the back, where no one can see them.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to disturb you… I … I just wanted… I just..” Chad can’t find the words. He has no idea why he came here or what he wants.
“What happened?” Scotty asks.
“Is Kevin here?”
“He has someone in his office right now. I don’t know who.” Scotty answers. “Can I help you in the meantime?” Chad seems to think over this question. He nods quickly, obviously close to tears.
“We were at the police-station. M-Max told us that Sh-Shirley is pregnant. M-m-my baby.” Chad begins to stammer. Scotty blinks. He looks at Chad who seems completely devastated, on the verge of a breakdown, and he doesn’t know what to do.
“Where’s Jason? Does he know?”
“He left… He thinks I slept with her.” Scotty bites his lip to not the state the obvious. If Shirley is pregnant, carrying Chad’s child, then it must have happened somehow. He pours Chad a whiskey and offers it to Chad. Chad grabs the glass and gulps it down, which surprises Scotty, because Chad is not such a big drinker anymore. So he’s obviously shaken by something.
The whiskey burns in Chad’s body. He hasn’t eaten anything for most of the day and the alcohol hits him the wrong way. His stomach burns and the shiver that runs through Chad isn’t a good one.
“I don’t feel so good…” He moans.
Scotty pulls Chad off the couch and pushes him towards the toilet. Just in time. Scotty leans against the door. Hearing Chad being sick on the other side, is making him feel a bit queasy as well. Only one thing to do. Food. He goes to the kitchen and quickly makes a sandwich for Chad.
“I’m in the office. I only want to be disturbed for real emergencies, like the kitchen being on fire or someone keeling over dead. Other than that, you’re on your own.” Scotty looks at Angie, who nods with confidence. She understands that she’s in charge. Then he watches her take his place in the kitchen.
He returns to his office to find Chad sitting on the couch again.
“I cleaned up… I’m sorry.. I…” Chad stammers. Scotty places the sandwich on the small table and he sits down on the chair opposite of Chad.
“Eat!” He orders but gently.
“I don’t think ….” Chad shakes his head.
“I know you just felt sick, but I think you need something in your stomach and it wasn’t whiskey.”
“No. Maybe not.” Chad surrenders. Scotty waits quietly for Chad to finish his sandwich. The first bites are clearly against his will, but then the sandwich disappears at great speed, showing how hungry Chad actually is.
“What’s going on? This isn’t you…” Scotty says.
Chad opens his mouth to say something, but there are no words. From deep inside him the desperation suddenly comes to eruption. Scotty watches how Chad’s face displays an incredible amount of pain, too much pain to handle apparently, because Chad’s cry is silent and comes from deep inside him. Seeing so much pain takes Scotty’s breath away.
He gasps, jumps up and rushes to the other side of the table to be with Chad. Chad sobs against his chest, his entire body shakes from the impact of the crying. Scotty holds Chad tightly. He’s very confused at what to do. All he can do is whisper that it will all be alright, even if he has no idea what is going on in Chad’s head.
He takes his phone and behind Chad’s back he quickly types “Need you in my office! NOW! It’s Chad!” and sends it to Kevin. He once again concentrates on comforting Chad, but it still takes him a few seconds to realize that, in between the sobs, Chad is trying to tell him something. But eventually he hears it.
“I.. I didn’t… want.. it.. I didn’t .. want it…” Chad cries and Scotty feels a chill go down his spine. What exactly was Chad telling him?
“You didn’t want it?” He asks. He takes Chad’s chin and forces him to look at Scotty. “She forced you? She… somehow.. took advantage of you?”
Scotty sees the deep pain first. Chad is absolutely mortified. But then he feels Chad nod. Scotty closes his eyes. For a moment he’s reminded of how he had felt when Alex Grodin, the psycho who had been after Kevin, had touched him rather intimately. He remembers how violated he had felt, even though nothing else had happened.
It had taken him quite a while to be able to tell Kevin anything about it, so horrified had he been by the experience. If Shirley was pregnant with Chad’s child then something more than ‘just touching’ had to have happened. There must have been a real sexual reaction. No wonder that Chad is devastated. Especially if it had been against his will.

“Where is Chad now?” Kevin asks.
“I don’t know.” Jason answers. “I left him at the hospital. … It was all too much.”
“I can’t even imagine how he must have felt.” Kevin sighs, he’s still reeling from the news that Jason had given him.
“No. Me neither. You’re right. If he didn’t tell me about the possibility that she was pregnant, it’s because he either didn’t think she could be or it was something he wanted to forget.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Find Chad would be a good start. Sit down and listen to his side of the story, I suppose. That is if he still wants to talk to me. I shouldn’t have walked away like that.. I should have known better. It just felt like such a slap to my face… I just… All I could hear was ‘she’s pregnant’, over and over in my head…”
“It’s only natural. If you had known that this was a possibility, you wouldn’t have been so shocked by it. It came from nowhere and…” Kevin picks up his phone, because he gets a message. It’s from Scotty. “… Chad is in Scotty’s office. Scotty needs me there. Now!” Kevin jumps up and, with Jason right behind him, he rushes off to Scotty’s office.
On the threshold Jason stops. He watches how Scotty and Kevin take care of the completely devastated Chad. His Chad. The same Chad who would never let anything faze him, now looks broken and crushed and, for once, Jason doesn’t know what to do.
“… but he didn’t want it.” He can hear Scotty say to Kevin.
The true meaning of what Scotty says, hits Jason hard. In the back of his mind he had thought of this possibility and he had rejected it just as hard. He had not wanted to contemplate the thought that Chad had been pushed into doing something against his wishes. Not Chad. Never Chad.
Chad had always had this easy ‘whatever’-attitude about sex. He had slept with men and women. He had fallen in love quickly and fallen out of love just as fast. Jason knows that sex had always been an meaningless thing to Chad, just a physical reaction, a way to relax and have fun. Chad had never seen the true value of it.
But when Chad and Jason had gotten together, Chad had known that Jason wouldn’t want to be in a relationship that would involve cheating. After long deliberation, wondering if he could make such a commitment, Chad had eventually promised Jason ‘fidelity’ and he had always kept his word.
Jason realizes that he had been hurt hard by the fact that Shirley being pregnant meant that, somehow, somewhere, someway, Chad must have had sex with her. But the thought that it must have been voluntary had been Jason’s, because he couldn’t deal with the alternative… And now he had to. Kevin gets up and walks up to Jason.
“Jason, snap out of it.” He says between clenched teeth. “Chad… You husband… Needs you. Not later, not tomorrow. But now. He needs you now. Will you just go to him, hold him and just fucking tell him that everything will alright… Because this is not my husband’s job to do. It’s yours.”
Jason seems to wake from his frozen position. He nods and takes Chad over from Scotty, who gets off the couch to join Kevin, who’s on the phone by now.
“Yeah, mom, can Olivia and Daniel stay with you tonight? I know I was supposed to pick them up, but we have a small crises here… No, not Scotty and me… Just some friends…”
Scotty look at Kevin, who is calm in a crises, like so often. Their eyes meet and Kevin smiles encouragingly. The smile says that everything will be alright, even if they both know that there’s no immediate solution for Chad and Jason. Scotty lets his hands rest on Kevin’s hips.
“I love you, you know that?” He says softly.
“I love you too.” Kevin answers, giving Scotty a quick kiss. “We need to help them.”
“Yes.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes… I’ll be fine.”
“Memories of Alex?”
“It came back for a second, but… if I understood correctly, what Chad went through was worse. Or at least more invasive.”
“Don't say that, Scotty, this is not a contest, what happened to you wasn't 'less important', just because Shirley went much further with Chad than Alex did with you."
Scotty appreciates that Kevi won't let him belittle what has happened to him, but he's over it mostly and, for Chad, the battle is only beginning. He wants to go to Chad and Jason, but Kevin pulls him right back.
"Scotty, I love you… and right now I think we should focus on Chad and Jason, but.. if you need me.. if it gets too much for you… memories and all… and I don’t notice it… Tell me. Alright? I'm here. And you're the most important person in my life.” Scotty knows why Kevin says this. Kevin and he had missed each other in communication before and it had lead to Scotty cheating on Kevin.
Scotty smiles as he caresses Kevin’s face. He kisses Kevin again, this time more insistently.
“I love you. Don’t worry. I won’t let anything or anyone come between us. Not ever again.” He promises.
