CHAPTER SIXTEEN
*****
Scotty opens the door to let Jason in.
“You’re early…” He says.
“Sorry, is it inconvenient?”
“No, not really. I think we’re done?” Scotty turns to a woman at the table. She smiles and nods.
“Jason, you remember Jill? She’s the one who brought us in touch with Olivia.” Scotty re-introduces Jill and Jason to each other. It had been a while since they had met.
“It’s nice to meet you again. You’ve brought such happiness to Scotty and Kevin.” Jason nods.
“Thank you. I wish I had more couples like Kevin and Scotty….” Jill smiles.
“Your work must be so difficult sometimes?” Jason sympathizes.
“You’re a minister, if I remember correctly?”
“Ex-minister… Found it too hard to combine religion and sexuality, where I was.”
“Well, even if you’re an ex-minister. You know the frustrations of the unfairness in life. So, coming to a place like this, where I know that the child, that I’ve put here is safe, is such a blessing.” Jason is a good enough judge of character and he's experienced enough to know and feel that someone is in emotional need, despite the sunny smile.
“Tough morning?” Jason understands. Jill hesitates, then shrugs and the cheerful smile disappears. Scotty watches it happen, surprised to see how easily Jason gets her to speak.
“You know how it goes… On one side I have a mother, who neglects her child, doesn’t give a damn about where it is or if it’s alive or dead.
On the other side, I have a young girl, pregnant, dying of a brain-tumor, will probably not make it to the end of her pregnancy, yet she’s so desperately to find someone who wants her baby… It’s sad. No immediate family, no friends who want the responsibility…. The contrast is so big…”
Jason nods. It usually is. It was one on the reasons why Jason had sometimes hated his work as a minister. The contrast in pain and happiness, good and bad, care and disinterest, love and hate.
“I know how tough this can be.” He says gently. “I’m sure you’ll find a solution.”
“Yes… Most likely the solution will be that I see both kids end up in the foster-system… And I’m not sure that they will be happier off.”
“I wish I could help you.”
“Thanks for the consideration…. Maybe a prayer of two would help..?” Jill suddenly laughs again.

“Okay. What have I done? Or haven’t I done?” Chad asks.
“What?” Jason looks up from his food.
“You haven’t practically said a word to me all night… What’s wrong?”
“The unfairness of life.” Jason answer quietly.
“What do you mean?”
“I met Jill this morning. The woman who helped Kevin and Scotty to get Olivia?...” Jason explains when he sees that Chad has no idea who he’s talking about. “And she told me that she has a pregnant girl who’s seeking parents for her unborn child… And I come here and there’s a nursery… with no baby… And I know I’m being foolish, but it’s unfair.”
“Why isn’t the girl taking care of her coming baby?”
“Brain tumor. It’s unfair. Here’s a girl who wants the best for her baby, but can’t give it, when there are so many kids who deserve the best and have parents who don’t care about them.”
Chad shoves his food around on the plate and then he says quietly:
“Monica, the girl who plays the role of the ‘unnamed nurse’ on Tempest Bay recently adopted a child. A boy. She’s over the moon. Loves the kid as if it were her own flesh and blood. Couldn’t love the child more if it was her own… It’s nice to see…”
They look at each other, both feeling that they’re coming a decision, without having to ask the other.
“I’ll call Scotty for Jill’s number?” Jason asks.
“Why not.” Chad answers.
*****
“I have to say, Mr McCallister, I think that you and your husband would be able to be good parents.” Jill smiles. “I’ll have to talk to the girl… I’m not sure how she’d feel about her child getting adopted by two gay men… I don’t think she’d be against it, but let’s talk to her first…”
At that moment, Chad comes back with the coffee and tea and some cookies.
“So, we stand a chance?” He asks, having heard Jill’s last words.
“Definitely, yes.” Jill smiles as she says how Chad takes Jason’s hand and squeezes it a bit. There’s so much hope in both of them that it reminds her of Kevin and Scotty when they came to her the first time.

For Shirley every day seemed like a vague blur. Since the night she had woken up with blood in her bed, she had lived somewhere between being alive and dead. She had gone in such a crises that hospital-staff feared that she would hurt herself, so they medicated her to the max.
She’s been told her baby is gone, but she doesn’t believe it. She’s convinced that the baby is still there. In her half-conscious state, she’d is sure that she can feel the baby move in her belly. And that her belly is growing, which isn’t true. She can hear others tell her that she’s no longer pregnant, but she blocks it out.
She has even named her child Lillian, after her mother. She protectively puts her hands on her belly and alone, at night, she quietly talks to her child. She tells Lillian that everything will be alright and that Chad will take real good care of her. And that once mommy is free to go, she’ll join Chad and Lillian. And Jason.
Even she could no longer ignore Jason. He had been with Chad all along. And he was willing to accept Lillian. If Jason could accept her daughter, then Shirley would be gracious enough to accept Jason. Some of the other women claim that though Chad wants Lillian, he doesn’t want Shirley, but Shirley knows that this would be ridiculous.
They have a child together, there will always be a connection between them. Their love for their child will reunite them and once that happens, Shirley is sure of this, they will live happily ever after in Chad’s house in Hollywood. She caresses her belly and whispers sweet words of love to her little child that is no longer there.

“No, I have no objection. If they are sincere…” Rose can’t emphasize it enough.
“They are.” Jill can only repeat it. “They are… If you want this…”
“That would be great.. Are they nice?” Her big blue eyes look at Jill. Fear, hope, interest and concern follow in quick succession.
“Yes. I’ve met them before, socially, they’re friends of another couple who have adopted a child. I know them through that couple and, to be honest, I think that your child would be in good hands. Do you want to meet them?”
“Yes. Please.”

Rose can’t believe it. She used to be part of Jason’s congregation and she recognizes him immediately. She believes it must be an act of God, that of all the men who could have been sent to her, it turns out to be Jason. Jason remembers her too and now Chad finds out about Rose’s past as well.
As a 14 year old she had drifted into the world of drugs, she had done things she doesn’t want to discuss, but Chad, who has seen quite some starlets, but also bigger stars, lose their battles with drugs, can fill in the blanks. Life had been a living hell for her, but when she had discovered that she was pregnant, she had turned her life around.
It had been the hardest battle ever. Especially after the father of the baby had been found in an alley after an over-dose. It had nearly sent her back into the life of drugs, but the love for her baby had been stronger. It had to be. She had screwed up her own life, but she wasn’t going to destroy the life of this innocent child.
The hardest part had been the terrible headaches. Five months into the pregnancy, she could no longer handle them. She had attributed them to her going through detox, but they had become unbearable. At the hospital they ran some checks on her and when the results came back, her world had stopped turning…
Ever since that day, she had been trying to find a safe place for herself and her baby, but it was so hard. Her family didn’t want anything to do with her and she doesn't exactly have friends that she could trust with her child. Jason and Chad listen to her story. Rose is now 7 months pregnant. She would give birth around the same that Shirley would have… It feels as if this just had to be.
They are finishing their conversation, when Rose suddenly gasps in surprise and covers her belly. She shyly lifts up her t-shirt a bit and shows them how the baby moves around.
“Do you want to feel ..?” She asks, wondering if the question would be inappropriate.
Chad and Jason give each other a nervous look, not sure what to say, but then she takes Jason’s hand and she puts her on her belly.
“I think these are the feet, because that side is much bigger. I think it must be the head..” She explains shyly.
Jason is surprised and shocked, but his reaction is to take Chad’s hand to feel what he feels.
“This is amazing.” Chad is in awe.
“Do you two seriously want my baby?” She then asks and Chad and Jason know that they do.
