"Bye.. And thank you!!" Olivia hugs Kevin so tightly that it nearly hurts. Then she throws herself on Scotty to hug him with just as much strength. Both men laugh at her enthusiasm. Olivia's brother shakes their hands.
"I'm so glad that it's alright with you two, that I take with me on this hiking-trip with my fiancée. It means a lot to me."
"And to Olivia too..." Scotty nods. He smiles graciously, even though he hates the idea that Olivia will not be spending the Summer-Holidays with them. They help Olivia into her brother's car and Kevin makes sure that her seat-belt is on, much to Olivia's embarrassment. She complains sweetly that she's not a kid anymore, but Kevin is not impressed.
"I just want to make sure that you're safe." He says, before he steps his back, so Olivia's brother can finally drive off. He can feel Scotty's arm around his waist as they both wave goodbye to Olivia. She waves back as hard as she can until the car disappears out of sight.
"Well, that's it. We're officially without kids for two weeks." Scotty sighs.
"Yeah, it feels a bit weird, doesn't it. We have taken three weeks off to spend with the kids and then suddenly Olivia is away with her brother and Daniel with his grandmother."
"Well, my mom has as much right to spend some time with her grandson as Nora does." Scotty feels the need to defend his mother.
"I'm not saying that I was against it. I think you had more issues with handing over Daniel to Bertha than I had." Kevin points out. Scotty takes a deep breath, wanting to protest Kevin's words, but then he reconsiders. In a way, Kevin is right. Scotty had indeed not been too happy to let Bertha take care of Daniel for 2 weeks.
But even he had to recognize that Bertha had turned out to be quite a good grandmother, even though their mother-son relationship is still 'uncomfortable' sometimes.
"So? What will we do now? We have 2 weeks to ourselves..." Scotty asks.
"I have no idea. We didn't really have things planned. A day or two at the beach with Olivia, yes. Maybe the zoo, or an amusement-park, but no big plans..."
"We could still go to the beach." Scotty points out.
"Or we could make a trip somewhere? Or see if Chad and Jason have plans? Or ... Actually we can do whatever we want. There's enough money. The restaurant is in good hands. The law-practice closed for 3 weeks. It's all been take care of. We can go wherever we want to go."
Silence falls between the two men as they realize how much freedom they suddenly have. Something they haven't had in quite some time.
"We can finally be together, just you and me." Scotty says softly. Kevin nods, equally confused about their next step, until a grin comes to his face.
"And I think I might have idea of what we can do and where we can go...." He then says....
