Summary: AU - Kevin/Scotty - Scotty is the manager in a hotel in a ski-resort. Kevin just got divorced. The Walkers think that he needs a 'nice family holiday'. He doesn't.
*******
"The Walkers are more trouble than they're worth!" Scotty fumes. He sits down behind his desk, not sure what to do next. Should he call his boss or not? He's so fed up with all the problems. And he's so tired. If he would put down his head, he'd fall asleep and stay asleep for at least 24 hours...
He rubs his face. The Walkers. This time Kevin Walker hadn't been the problem. He hadn't seen Kevin all day and according to Kevin's mother 'Kevin wasn't feeling well'. Scotty assumes that this is a euphemism for 'he's passed out drunk somewhere', but at this moment that is not Scotty's concern.
This time a fight had started between Sarah and Kitty and when a waitress had tried to intervene, she'd been struck down by Sarah's fist that had been meant for her sister. Just as he wonders what he can do, his telephone rings and seeing the number from his boss pop up on his screen makes him aware that this can't be much good.
"Hey, Scotty. We have a problem."
"Really? What is the problem?" Scotty asks though he doesn't want to know.
"I've received a message from the mayor. We have to evacuate the hotel. Asap!"
"What?! Why?!"
"Well, you know those scientists that have put all that equipment in the hills? 'Cause they wanted to keep an eye on the snow-levels and the possibility of avalanches? They claim that the snow in the hills and mountains is unpredictable and that an avalanche can happen between now and the end of the year. And Sunny Meadows is in the path..."
"That's ridiculous!" Scotty shrugs. "We haven't been in the danger-zone since 1956. The ground here is too level for an avalanche to keep traction. We learned that from the 1956 avalanche, when it hit close, but could not reach our hotel."
"Yeah, well, that's not what the scientists say now."
Scotty shakes his head. He cannot understand the logic. Nothing has changed much over the years and he cannot imagine that they are really in any danger.
"Will we have to send everyone home?" In his mind Scotty quickly estimates the loss of money and how much work this will be. Never mind dealing with all the complaints.
"No. We talked it through and the decision is made to bring all the guests to the new hotel. We had wanted to wait another 2 weeks, till after new Year to start up, because of staff-shortage and the fact that we couldn't deal with the overflow from one hotel to the other, but now we'll just bring in all the guests and staff from the old to the new.
We have started up heating the place. Christmas decorations have been put up as fast as possible. We'll be ready to receive everyone tomorrow. We've booked a few buses for those guests who didn't come up here with their own cars. It will be a huge undertaking, but I'll email you all the plans and you'll see that it will work out fine."
*****
"Define 'it will work out fine', because I think that my boss and I have different opinions on the word 'fine'." Scotty says to no one in particular. He watches all the activity. The hotel is like a bee-hive that got poked with a stick. People walk in and out. Luggage gets carried around. People talk, ask, complain and need more information than the staff can give.
No one is particularly angry over having to move to another hotel. After all, avalanches are things you don't need for Christmas. But it does take a lot of organization to get everything done the right way, and there does appear to be some "organization" missing from the plans, as they had been presented.
For one, there are only 2 buses, so a large group is already on their way to the valley while another large group still waits to be transported. Some people, but not everybody, have left by car and Scotty sincerely hopes that the four people he put in charge of the head-count did their jobs right.
"Fifth and sixth floors are empty. Forth floor almost ready too." One of his waiters reports.
"Good. Make sure no one goes back up there. Then check the third floor. I think I saw all the Walkers leave though."
"That's right. Although one of them stayed here. A family had a sick kid and the family offered to take the mother and child to the hospital on their way down. Kevin Walker is still here, but he'll go on the next bus." Scotty nods that he heard the words. In the hall he can see Kevin waiting with his two large bags of luggage.
"Good. Then the third floor is ready as well. Move on to the second floor, check if the buses are already on their way back up to the take the next batch of people. Let's get everyone out of here as fast as possible." Scotty orders. He takes a deep breath. Time to get back to work and help people get ready.
*****
Kevin's head is pounding. It is as if a couple of people slam into his brains with heavy hammers. He closes his eyes. Yesterday he had a fever, which is gone now, but he still feels miserable. His stomach is still upset and all he want to do is just crawl in bed and sleep off whatever he has in his system.
"I need to get out of here." He whispers to himself. The hall is full with people waiting to be picked up. Children run and scream. Parents shout out to their children to stay around and stop making so much noise. People complain and some are very loud about it. It all thunders in Kevin's ears and head.
He walks up to one of the employees. A young man with the name-tag 'Petey'.
"I'm going...." Kevin starts, but Petey raises his hands.
"Sorry, sir, I'm helping this woman, just a minute." Kevin sighs, but steps back to wait for his turn.
Petey helps an elderly lady first with some answers to questions that he has answered a million times before today. Kevin waits patiently for the elderly lady to be ready, but as he's about to step closer, because she's leaving, someone else steps in. A woman with a loud voice yells at Petey about something she lost and ... Petey walks away to help her.
The elevator doors open and Kevin sees they're empty. He grabs his two bags, gets on the elevator and moves to the 3rd floor, to his room. He falls down on the bed. Just a few minutes of quiet. Just a little bit of silence. He closes his eyes and within seconds he's asleep.

"Scotty!"
"Mr Greene! We're almost done." Scotty replies with a satisfied look on his face. "The last few people need to get on board and then I will close up and get on the bus as well and then we can go...."
Scotty is clearly exhausted. He hasn't had much to eat, his eyes have dark lines underneath them and he looks pale. But he is happy with how smoothly it all went today.
"Yes. That is what I've been wanting to talk you about. I have decided to give you two weeks off, paid in full."
"What? Why?" Scotty asks, feeling a bit suspicious. Mr Greene smiles. Something that somehow always feels creepy to Scotty.
"Well, to tell you the truth, I've hired a manager for the new hotel and I want to see how he copes under stress. Don't worry, he will not take your place.
If he's good, he will work under you. If he fails, ... I will probably call you and beg you to come to the hotel and take over." Mr Greene jokes. Scotty doesn't like it when Greene jokes. Greene is fairly good boss, but Scotty never quite trusts him. It seems like Greene is always looking for that thin line, the one you're not supposed to cross, and he balances on it.
"You live nearby. You can take your car and go to your own home." Mr Greene walks with Scotty through the kitchen. "If there's anything you need from the kitchen-freezers, take it now. Most of it will stay here, we will pick it up later in the week. Take some wine and champagne with you, if you like. I want you to take some rest and recharge.
If everything goes according to plan, January will be even more busy than December and I need you to be ready and focused. Meanwhile, I will see how the new guy is doing, if he's any good and if he will be an asset to our new hotel or not."
"You seriously want me to take two weeks off?" Scotty asks, still somewhat in denial.
"I do. I will drive down with the last batch of people. Can I leave it up to you to lock up and make sure that everything that needs to be switched off will be switched off?"
"Yeah, of course." Scotty answers, his head still spinning over the fact that he suddenly has a two-week vacation.
*****
Kevin opens his eyes. The silence is deafening and it's cold in the room. Damn! How long had he been asleep? A quick check on his watch tells him it's nearly 5 hours later! He quickly gets off his bed and he grabs his bags. He walks over to the elevator, but pushing on the buttons accomplishes nothing. Everything remains eerily silent.
He manages to go down the stairs with his 2 bags. When he enters the main hall, everything is quiet and empty. He drops his bags with a thud and runs over to the nearest telephone. The line is dead however. Slowly it starts to dawn on Kevin that he's all alone in the hotel...
*****
"What?" Scotty asks incredulously. "Who did they lose?"
"Kevin Walker." answers Candice, one of the desk-clerks, on the phone. "His family just reported that he was not among the last batch of people that came in..."
"Brilliant! Now what?"
"Can you go back to the hotel and check if he's still there?"
"Did no one do a last check?"
"Two boys were supposed to, but it was all so hectic... They may have forgotten a thing or two. Thinking the other one did it. And then they were called away."
"Alright. No panic. I will get in my car and go back down to the hotel." Scotty sighs, feeling creeped out by the idea that he has to wander through an empty hotel by himself.
"Scotty, sweetheart, be careful. The weather-stations are predicting heavy snowfall and ice-cold winds for tonight and the next days."
"I know. I'm ready for that. No problem. I will go back to the hotel and see if I can find Kevin Walker."
"Thank you. I'm so sorry about the extra trouble."
"Don't worry about it."
*****
Kevin is close to tears. He has no reach with his mobile phone. The telephone lines are dead. He's all alone and it's getting very cold in the hotel with nearly everything switched off and for now he can still see things, because of daylight, but what if the night comes? He shivers again and puts on his coat against the cold.
Then he hears a humming sound that gets closer and closer. Kevin approaches the front-door. He hears a hissing sound and he realizes that the doors are being opened from the outside. He quickly grabs his bags and hides behind one of the pillars in the hall, afraid of who might come in.
From his point he can see a tall person enter. The man shakes off the snow and lowers the cap of his winter-coat.
"Scotty!" Kevin sighs with relief, startling Scotty, because Kevin's voice is louder than expected and Scotty had not really expected Kevin to actually be there in the hall.
He still believed that it had all been an error and that Kevin had been found amongst the guests of the new hotel, but no, he stood there, totally flabbergasted and maybe a little scared.
"Are you alright?" Scotty can't help but ask, because Kevin does look a little sick.
"Yes. I'm so sorry. I was sick yesterday and I still had such a head-ache this morning and it was so crowded and noisy. I just went back to my room to get some silence.. I fell asleep...." Kevin rambles on, clearly distressed by now.
"It's okay. I found you. I will have to let your family and my management know."
Scotty speaks in a calm voice to get Kevin to relax.
"Will they come and pick me up?" Kevin asks. Scotty shakes his head.
"Too dangerous. There have been weather-warnings for the entire area. I think that it's best if I take you to my place."
"Your place?" Kevin asks.
"Yes. It's about a 20 minute drive, if the situation doesn't get worse. It's definitely warmer and cozier than this place." Scotty smiles. "But we have to hurry up. It's getting dark fast now."
Scotty takes up one of Kevin's bags and Kevin takes the other. They go outside where Scotty's car is waiting. He quickly puts Kevin's belongings in the back of the car.
"Get in. I will get some extra food from the kitchen, I'll be right back." Scotty orders and Kevin quickly gets in the car.
A few minutes later Scotty is back with a large box, which he also places on the backseat. It got even colder in the time that Scotty had needed to get the extra supplies.
"Hotel is locked again. Let's go. Fasten your seatbelt tightly and hold on. It might get rather bumpy because the road is covered by snow and I can't see all the potholes."
